Throwback Thursday: Game Genie

Gaming

Game Genie

Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, Start? Who the hell needs to remember all that when you have the Game Genie! The Game Genie truly was a technological wonder for all those who used it. Just slap your compatible NES game onto the GG’s chassis, punch in a few cheat codes, and prepare yourself for a long afternoon of gameplay. Bummed Super Mario Brothers only gives you three lives? No problem. Can’t seem to defuse all those bombs in Area 2 of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Forget about it. Why actually get good at a video game when you can just use the Game Genie. Okay, I’ll confess, I never would have seen the end of TMNT without the use of these guys:

GXSOUAST – Don’t take most damage
SXVZGSOO – Don’t take damage from non-killing seaweed
AEOOGTZA – Full energy boost from pizza slices

What say you? Did you artificially enhance your gaming abilities with everyones favorite Genie? Or were you too much of a purist for such things?

BGR Throwback Thursday is a weekly series covering our (and your) favorite gadgets of yesterday and yesteryear.

I still remember SLXPLOVS was infinite lives in Mario 3.

holy crap this is bringing back memories. got one for my birthday in i’m guessing 1990 and it was awesome. every game could be beaten!! the booklet with all the codes that came with it was magnificent.

Oh Snizzap! Ya’ll went there. LOL

I never beat TMNT 4 the NES. I loved it but it was hard as hell.

  • Bill Murray

I would beat the game legit, then i would go back and use the game genie.
I remember it bugging out on certain games with crazy codes.

Never had one… I just remember my friend that did have one sneaking it around and telling everyone that it was illegal in the US… oh the joys of being young and naive…

The next throwback should just be to X-Men on the Genesis… the sweet little trick that I only discovered in ultimate frustration as I swore off ever playing the game again to beat the stage with Mojo is still a great memory of mine.

We always used … Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, SELECT, start … On Contra. UNLIMITED lives!

Code left out the “select” maybe it was not needed but it always worked that way.

    • ContraGuy

Select was if you were playing 2 player…it moved the cursor to 2 player

      • ContraGuy

And it wasn’t unlimited lives…it was like 20. Come on seriously learn your contra.

      • um

        30…

Oh I miss these. Made me feel a sense of accomplishment on video games cause I stunk at playing them.

I remember there was a code so you could jump super high in super mario brothers. It allowed you to jump over the flag pole and run past the castle. Unfortunately, the level was blank and just scrolled forever after doing so… we thought it was hilarious and great anyway.

Game Genie was cool, but the best game ever didn’t even need it! Castlevania II: Simons Quest. I still remember the code to start the game with the flame whip: GPOW KUEI V5I0 H8CM.

  • Donatello

The only problem with those TMNT codes is that there is a level or two with spikes on the ground. If you land on them you don’t take damage, but you can’t walk on them either so you just get stuck and have to reset the game.

It was awesome because if you figured out the pattern to some codes (ie, infinite energy or X lives), you could change them and make your own. I lost all of that but I used to have my own custom codes for some games (like, two) that had waaaaaaaaaaaay better results than intended.

I did not start using a cheat code enhancer until the PlayStation. I used to love my GameShark.
