chatr, Rogers' unlimited talk and text brand, gets official

Did we nail it or what? Today Rogers announced the creation of chatr, the low-cost wireless brand we exclusively told you about last week. Created to serve what Rogers calls a “niche” market that is not currently served by its flagship and value brands Rogers Wireless and Fido, chatr will offer no contract voice and text plans as well as unlimited talk and text plans. Data is not a part of chatr’s game plan. According to Rogers, the big draw of chatr is not only its great plans, but that for the first time it gives urbanites who simply want to make calls and send texts affordable service from a “network they can trust.” We were pretty curious about the timing of this launch, what with WIND Mobile now being half a year old and Mobilicity having only been on the scene for six weeks, so we asked Rogers about it. Surprisingly, they were adamant that they could not care less what their competitors are doing or where it is they are operating. They were quick to point out that chatr has been one year in the making and that it actually designed to mimic business model that allowed MetroPCS to go from a small time carrier to the 5th largest in the United States. Sadly this was about as much extra information as we could squeeze out of Rogers. As much as they want to get chatr up and running today, they’ve still got a few more things to do behind the scenes before it launches by the end of summer. This means that they can’t get into specifics about when the network will launch. But as we have said before, thanks to our connects we know that Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, and Ottawa are a lock. Anyone planning to wait with baited breath?

I think Rogers should ditch the Fido brand entirely considering there isn’t much difference between the two.

Rogers managed to pretty much kill the dog and take any advantage that Fido had and rip it out. Fido had 20¢/minute long distance and roaming. Rogers changed that 20¢ to $1.45 with 60¢ additional long distance on top of that. Rogers thinks they can trick people with the new fake Rogers service.

“they could care less what their competitors are doing or where it is they are operating”

Now think carefully and see if that means what you think it means.

    HINT: It doesn’t!

No one cares what Rogers does these days. Let em have Chatr, it will fail and die off. Who the hell uses Unlim Minutes and Text these days anyways?

Data usage is rising more and more each year and they just keep raping Canadians in that are. Unless they come up with some reasonable data plans they can get bent.

Is this really the Bla1ze from CrackBerry? You should get Michael to read your posts before you hit the submit button.

  • Ronald

Congratulations, Bla1ze… you’re the idiot of the day. Who uses unlimited text? Yeah.. no one. Wait… wait a minute. Let me just check my cell phone usage census… and… A LOT OF PEOPLE. Oh, I was completely wrong. My cell phone census also says you’re an idiot and that you should get bent.

Multi-branding has worked a lot in the past and for many organizations. Just take a look at Coca Cola.

    • HO

Sir, let me just say it, ur a complete idiot for one part, it’s ovbious Robbers is thinking that ppl on Wind or Mobilicity are teenagers who only know texting, sorry but ppl who is on Wind also looks fo data, same for minutes, they just want to tie the service for a small ammount of users. Retarded move from Marketing but hey, it’s Rogers!

  • Nico

If Chatr is available in all major cities, I would think it was a good idea. If its only in the cities that WIND, Mobilcity ect are in, I would think it’s pretty low of Rogers. I would like to see this in Saskatchewan. We don’t even have City Fido! Most things are cheap in Sask, but we could still use a cheap non contract Unlimited Talk n Text plan. I still think that there should be some sort of Data/Browsing option. At least something for Social Networking maybe. EDGE speeds would ber better than nothing…

sweet, seems like a good service =D

haha. Gorilla tactics to cripple new entrants and buy em out later for chump change, if at all. Switch to either Wind or Mobilicity asap. Support your local entrants immediately. Big scandal at my company last year because Rogers was charging over $10k/year for numerous employees last year. Employees got bad rap from ignorant management that didn’t understand Rogers total scam running. Rogers customer “consultant” kept bills invisible from employees, while concurrently using them to extort huge $ from corporation. It’s absolutely true bad rap these guys have. The are Robbers.

    • Baester

sign up to Wind so we can send our money out of canada! dirty corporation or not, at least profits stay in the company and all jobs are canadian.

      happy canada day

      • Tdot34

Yea our great Canadian corporations that are price gouging us.

      • vasdf

take economics 100 and u will know why you have no idea what your talking about

  • abc123

Patiently waiting for the creation of Datr… for people who want unlimited data without having to get a second mortgage on the house to pay for it.

Rogers is a fully Canadian brand, but Chat-r will be different from Fido, obviously they can’t clone it right? They obviously are going for the “just a phone, I want ulim talk and text” people – and there are millions of these. You’re an idiot if you think this isn’t going to be big. It’ll kill! Rogers customer service is outstanding – I’ve been a customer for 8 years. If Chat-rs sales and support is anything like Rogers, they’ll kill Wind, Public and Mobilicity (whom I’ve never heard of).

  • Rel1982

I have been with Rogers since 2003 after I left Bell. If this service is in-line with the Rogers brand it will do well. There are people that have beefs with any company…

  • Tim

@ Sam Ellens: You’ve mis-quoted the article. It clearly says they “could NOT care less”. Your error completely changes the context of the website you linked.

    • http://flavors.me/samellens Sam Ellens

They obviously edited the article in the 10 days between my comment and yours. I copied and pasted – it’s pretty difficult to somehow lose a word in the middle of a copied and pasted sentence.

  • T

Been with Fido since just before Rogers took over, no problems at all… Before that I was with Bell, nothing but problems and dropped calls.

I’m a senior baby boomer. If I were still in the workforce (former accountant) or if, as a senior, I had a busy life style, I would love to have a smartphone. My life is family, friends, and home life. My PC is all I require for the internet information I need. I am invested in several techology stocks. The only thing I have right now is an old cell phone that cost me $15.00 a month for pay as you go. I would, however, love to have texting abilities now because that is what my family uses for quick messages. This product would be ideal for me and a multitude of others like myself. Keeping it simple and inexpensive.

  • Zee

I will not buy Chatr even if they are offering half price plans compared to Wind Mobile and Mobilicity. I will support new cell carriers even though I have to live with dropped calls and limited coverage. I just don’t want to give a single cent to rogers/Chatr . They are robbers and piece of s#i!.

  • sardz

I will never ever give rogers a red cent.I guess I would feel different if I never had a problem with them.Hope you fans of rogers never have to deal with them, but if you do make sure you set aside 3hrs of your life you will never get back only to hear the same thing over&over again(IM SORRY THERE IS NOTHING I CAN DO)And just try to talk to a supervisor.GOOOOD LUCK!

  • K Falco

What’s with all the negativity? Pick ur game & play it. Personally, Ive been with Fido for yrs-great service and since I lv my back yd occas’ly, full QUALITY cover necessary. I’m getting it & don’t feel gouged. Also, Fido’s plans r simple & flexible.

  • Born2lead
