Hulu Plus gets official: $9.99 per month, supports iOS, TVs, Blu-ray players, and more

Announced earlier today after months of speculation, Hulu Plus has finally become official. For $9.99 per month, subscribers will be able to watch their favorite shows — including those from seasons past — on a multitude of internet-connected devices. Mobile devices are a go, with iOS devices including the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad, and iPod touch (3rd generation) being the main attraction at this point in time. The best part as far as mobile is concerned is that streaming will work on both Wi-Fi and 3G networks. Several internet-connected HDTVs and Blu-ray players from Samsung already have support for the streaming service, and later on in the year, both Sony and Vizio will introduce support in some of their sets ad Blu-ray players. The PlayStation 3 will support the service “soon”, while the Xbox 360 will play nice come 2011. Hulu Plus will officially launch is July, but if you’re lucky you might just be able snag a preview invite.

    Comcast canceled, hello Hulu plus

  • ER6037

Canceling cable as well, can’t wait to get this on my PS3!

LOL good to see I’m not the only one who hates comcast.

Oh yeah! I’m not sure why we have to wait till 2011 for the 360, but I’ll have absolutely no need for cable once this is ready, saving me $60-70/month. Add streaming on my EVO (hopefully Android will come soon) with 4G and now we will be talking!

That door slamming sound you hear is the executive conference room doors at the cable companies as they discuss their next moves, ie, what legal angle they are going to use when they sue Hulu.

I dont get it. I get Hulu on my N1 for free already. Whats all this hubub?

      • GorGar

I guess some people like having full access to older episodes and shows.

Oh, and some people like watching TV on this device they got now… what’s it called again? Oh yeah: A TELEVISION. (Can’t assume EVERYONE has a HTPC, can we?)

Sounds good, just gotta wonder what the time frame from being new on Cable to HULU. Will new shows appear at the same time as they appear on cable or an hour afterwards ?

  • Darone

When will we get it on Roku?

I enjoy Hulu, but I wonder – will there still be ads on the pay version? Why pay if you can see it for free now, with ads?

    • Matt(sZ)

there is way more content with the pay version, entire seasons, and it’s in HD

I just used Hulu this evening. Its basically Hulu but in a truly optimized for mobile devices form of an App. No Flash needed. It acts pretty much the same, even the timeline is the same and there are still commercials.

Its even more impressive on an iPad (saw it on a friends). They really captured their Web version on the iOS. Now I need to see if the PS3 can connect to Hulu once more. It could initially until Hulu disabled it. Besides Adobe hasn’t rolled out any updates for the PS3′s Flash plug-in. Typical Adobe.

The silliness of your comment is: how many commercials a day do you see on cable now?

  • Jeff H

I noticed Android was not mentioned in this announcement. WTF?!

    • jfr

Unfortunately, Android is an after thought for most developers. iOS apps pay 50x more than Android apps, so why waste the time and build for both? I assume they will get one eventually, but Android will always come second until they can show they have the demand.

Cancel cable? It’s all good unless you like sports, and/or live in Canada.

  • Allen L

Yes, cancel cable. It’s all good with sports if you have an Xbox360, which will have ESPN as well.

  • HEMI 922

it is not open source for the community of the world.. I rather stick YouTube.. :o p

    • GorGar

Build a home theater PC (cheap or expensive, don’t matter) and you get the best of all worlds.

This might be a good move for individuals who enjoy mainstream tv media. For some individuals, there are still niche tv networks so I won’t be dropping my tv just yet.

Also, I think the free stuff now there is great.

  • Duran

    One Question.

    Is it HD?

How good is the quality when streaming online, because I use a couples sites now such as technistv, freetvonline, etc.

Plus, nothing beats HDTV receiever watching MNF on ESPN 40″ Samsung.

So if the quailty is there I will be there.

Does this get rid of the advertisements? Sorry to be a downer but I don’t understand why so many people are so excited about paying money to watch highly compressed (low quality) video with advertisements that you can’t skip. Either have a pay service with no advertisements or a free service supported by advertisers.

Personally I will continue to watch full HD for free over the air (with adverts I can skip over).
