This is one of the ways RIM is going to beat the iPhone and Android

Opinions

BlackBerryTraffic

A traffic app out of 1995. Yes, it’s a beta leaked application, but does that really even matter? You can clearly see their thought pattern. Plus I’m not sure a 4 year old could make something as ugly in Xcode for iPhone if they tried.

You’re just upset that you didn’t get accepted into the beta. this is proven by you berating the UI for staying in line with the rest of the OS, and not noting ANY of the supposed good points, not even to berate them.
and, like Gizmodo, this site will never again intentionally be visited by me

    BGR,

I have been beta testing this Traffic App today. I am not allowed to provide details, but when it’s released, I hope you are willing to give an apology for such a condescending write up. This thing is pretty bad-a**

    • Speedy

I have too…it’s a piece of crap and completely not revolutionary in any way. I’m a lover of Blackberry myself, but I’m sick of the outdated GUI on every app and lack of utility that I can’t find done better in apps like Google Maps, which has traffic, come on don’t blind yourself. What about the Facebook app newest beta? That’s still not a winning app. Twitter was the only thing they’ve done right a while and that was probably because they worked on it with the people of Twitter to give users a great official app.

      • chris

Maybe I used the term “bad-a**” a little loosely, but it has great potential, especially with the turn-by-turn navigation.

      • Rahul

How does it compare to Google Maps turn-by-turn navigation for Android devices?

      • Rahul (Another one)

The picture above answers your question. What do you think? The app is designed by RIMM (I own the S2 and it’s the crappiest of the crappiest of the crappiest phones ever due to their stupid OS). RIMM has failed and will fall hard – let them… as far as I’m concerned – I’m moving to either Android or Apple when my contract ends.

      • matt

I am also a beta tester of this app and clearly we need to focus on where it is going and not what it is. It is a beta for a reason. The direction of it is clear. I wonder when it will replace BB Maps.

  • Max

Listen up you BB morons, and listen good. You have put up with crap from BB for so long with horrible browsing, horrible apps, battery pulls, etc etc that they can put out this load of dung and you accept it as ‘bad@$$’? Are you sh/tting me? Don’t you deserve better? But hey, if morons like actresses and Hannah Montana can work a BB, then I guess morons like you can too. ‘Oh it does email tho tho tho good!’ and BBM!!! Wow, you can IM on that thing? That’s so so cool! No other phone can IM. Oh but it’s only to other moron BB users.

    • Tdot34

Great post dude, are you looking forward to Junior High-school next September?

      • ibcop

No, he’s in summer school now! Haha

    • chris

Ahh, Max…my little douche bag. Your flamboyant post made me chuckle. Yet, you seem to be like the rest. A little sheep who passes too much judgment without having a clue.

this is a cool iPhone fanboy website

Pick me, Pick me. I want to be like everyone else on the planet and have an IPhone, so I too can be told how and when I can use services and apps on it because I am way too stupid to know how to use my device… I know its a PDA and not a phone, but I will go tow to tow with any IPhone user on the planet with my HP Ipaq 211 in any way you would like and I gurantee my device will out perform in all categories against any IPhone on the market. Oh, by the way, I have more memory and can carry extra batteries with me. If you choose to challenge me with phone calls, lets do that as well, I will have to be in a WIFI location but with the reception of the IPhone, you probably will have to be as well. Anyone whom thinks this is not the case has not owned devices as long as me and even if you have I can say with some assurance that I have more apps for more mobile devices than 95 to 99% of the consumers using mobile devices.

      • John Staples

By the way, if you would like to know how to install unlimited apps on a Windows Mobile device just let me know, I have a trick that few know and am willing to share if anyone is interested. For example, I have more than 200 apps on my HP Ipaq 211 with memory left over for day to day activities. • erv

Please tell me where best place is to buy one of these and what to look for–also is there just one app store?

  • Max

Hey my old Timex Sinclair had better apps than BB does…ya MORONS!!

  • PN

This is a terribly biased article and gives no information at all. What’s the pioint of this? BGR loves apple and hates BlackBerry, old news.

  • Karlh

For all the slamming blackberry gets from the consumer market. I keep looking around the college where I work and more and more kids are carrying blackberries.

    • Peter

Because it’s a few losers who keep posting crap on here. BlackBerry is very popular. BBM is awesome and not even Apple’s 200,000 apps can lure me away from BBM. Most people I know use BlackBerry and they love it. I have no idea what some of the people on here complain about. BlackBerry apps are fine and they work great. I use Poynt, Facebook, Twitter, Google Maps, Dictionary.com, Yellow Pages, Weather Network, Translator… what more do I need? What’s the point of having useless stupid apps?

    • Josh

Yep. BGR doesn’t seem to understand the idea of ‘something for everyone’. It’s sort of like a Porsche enthusiast predicting the demise of Toyota because they don’t have a car to complement the 911 GT3. Dude’s all chuckling to himself while the rest of the world is buying Corollas and Camrys.

      • Tangello

        very true

  • Douglas Lee

I think BGR has a point. I’m a long time BlackBerry user but am finding it harder and harder to deny that RIM has turned into a one-trick pony as of late. All they have now is email, and it certainly feels like iOS and Android will eventually be good enough in this regard if they aren’t already. I don’t think RIM will ever turn into the Palm of 2011 but i do think their market presence will diminish tremendously very soon. I can see them eventually relegated to only the business segment until this generation is replaced in the next 10 years by the iPhone generation. Then BlackBerry’s may end up being just a niche device. It just feels like a very stale company with their product line. The 9300 feels like an insult with its mix-and-match design, and at this point I can’t help but wonder how many others feel the same way. At the very least, can’t RIM just make a device that doesn’t force me to pull the battery every 1-2 weeks?

    • John Staples

I can assure you neither IPhone nor Google can yet offer what Blackberry can in the way of Communications, both companies have a way to go in this category, this and security is why I.T. Administrators choose Blackberry for business, period.

  • Boy Gay Report

All the bashing on RIM, let’s not forget all the things about apple.

    1) products made in sweatshops, where several workers have committed suicide. So far apple has refused to do anything and continues to deal with FoxConn. I guess apple is reassured that the workers get paid about $2 a day

    2) built an atennna around the outside of the phone, looks nice except the phone doesn’t work and apple/jobs refuses to admit it or apologize

    3) display coloration

    3) lack of quality control as per upside down volume buttons

    4) it took 4 generations and almost 4 years for apple to implement folders into its OS (let’s not even talk about cut, cupy, and paste)

    5) Facetime is almost useless because not only do you have to use wifi (which means most of time you’ll be able to use a computer to video chat) but the person you want to video chat has to have an iphone 4 too.

  • Scott

The one thing that keeps being forgotten on these posts are all the supported business apps and services the BB is well versed in… Show me an iWhatever that will completely wipe if access is attempted by an unauthorized user, or an app that will allow me to encrypt or digitally sign my emails, then I will consider switching. Oh yes, the calender syncing that doesn’t account for timezone changes automatically has burned several of my business associates who are self-avowed, card carrying iPhone worshipers.

  • radio2

I think there’s is a huge misconception as to the value of RIM. You see, there are plenty of consumers right now who choose Blackberries over iPhones and Android devices. Why? The simple answer is BBM and its dedicated pricing scheme. It’s cheaper than data plans and generally better than texting others.

The other factor is that Android simply isn’t as big as everyone makes it out to be. Personally, I love Android and use the HTC Magic. But outside of specifically the United States, Android is practically non-existent. Blackberries and iPhones reign supreme (and Nokia devices in Europe/Asia).

So to summarize, Android isn’t as big as everyone thinks it is. And Blackberries are not used solely by businesses or those affiliated with them.

    • Anonymous

“Blackberries” isn’t a word. If you’re going to kiss their asses, at least know they want to be called “Blackberry Devices”.

  • Peter

    I LOVE BBM!!!!!!!!

  • Moonbaseone

I find it odd that almost most Rim fan brings up the iPhone, saying things like, “but the iphone can’t do this, that, etc… even when you simply say something negative about the blackberry that you, as a blackberry user may not like. Then you here things like, “Well, get yourself an iToy then.”

It’s like they feel threaten by the iPhone, and forget there are other phones out there that Rim should be concerned about too.

  • james

haha. you guys are funny. max is actually right. I had a blackberry storm and it was easily the worst phone I’ve ever owned. i’m honestly surprised RIM is still in business. it boggles my mind that people still buy blackberries. seriously, when email is the only thing they can do well, and it’s only slightly better than other phones do email, it’s hardly a ‘smartphone’. every app runs ridiculously slow, the apps aren’t very good anyways, you have to pull the battery 3 times a day. i switched to the incredible and it’s like a bazillion times better.

whatever. not worth arguing about but it’s 4:15 in the morning, I’m at work and I’m really bored. BB’s suck. iPhones are old news. Androids where it’s at.

  • james

karlH, that’s because college kids are poor, and they give blackberries away for free just for signing a contract. most college kids can’t drop 200 bucks for the incredible or EVO 4G or however much money an iSuck costs.

yes, I’m an android fanboy. it’s pretty easy to be one when their phones are so much better than the competition.

  • http://justincredible.me Justin Credible

I had the iPhone 3G and 3GS. Just got a Bold 9700 and never looking back. Nine out of ten people I know use BB’s. The guy with the iPhone always seems to miss the parties since he doesn’t get the BBM and we forget to text him. Woops.

BB’s just work. No matter how you hold ‘em. Supreme instant messaging and mailbox integration. And you don’t need no stinkin’ jailbreaking to do what you want. Solid, reliable, beautiful design. Later, Steve. Blackberries even taste better than apples.

    • Moonbaseone

“The guy with the iPhone always seems to miss the parties since he doesn’t get the BBM and we forget to text him. Woops.”

This is seriously a LAME comment to try and dis the competition…

  • Dan C

I believe that Blackberry is seriously missing the boat…they make very little noise in the press, I feel like they are the Microsoft of the handset market, big and slowly dieing…

    • JugaBunny

Isn’t Microsoft the Microsoft of the handset market?

    • Josh

Except Apple, after almost 30 years in the PC market, is struggling to break 15% market share. Microsoft has the rest.

Apple may be loud and obnoxious and in everyone’s face, but that doesn’t translate to sales. You can argue that point all you want, but you cannot argue their market share.

      • http://infotainmentempire.blogspot.com Rob

I know this is a REALLY old post, but you pointed out Microsoft has the “rest” of the PC market whereas Apple is “struggling to break 15% market share.”

PC Market or OS Market? Last time I checked Microsoft doesn’t make computer hardware, just components/accessories. I would assume you meant OS installed on computers from the factory.

  • Thom

Dan C – what a load of crap…. Microsoft are only waking up to the idea that they need to make their own handsets rather than rely on the crap their buddies made for them……

RIM have made their own devices for 10 years, as well as the end to end solution to secure it for business and consumers.
RIM don’t flood your screens with crapverts, but trust me, they’re quietly winning. Check out the market share buddy.

  • lulu

BoyGenius is shorting RIM stocks. That’s the only way his obsession with bashing RIM makes sense.

  • John Willemse

I’m very happy with my BlackBerry and I see no reason to change to Apple or Android. I’ve seen them all, my friends have them, but *I* don’t need anything else that is not currently on my BB… I love the reception and like how I can hold it any way I like while making a call ;)

  • http://alghienkad06.student.ipb.ac.id thea

    cool

  • Bob

No one has estimated how many traffic probes BB has at their disposal in the US.

This move overnight most likely gives them the most accurate traffic service on the planet with millions more probes than Inrix or Navteq although they may monetize the data and sell it to third parties also.

  • Sigh

Remember when BGR was a worthwhile blog?

    No, neither do I.

Is this even an article or is it just a blurb about an app… weird.

THIS is why iPhone will disappear. Huge gaping security holes:
