Sprint announces the Samsung Epic 4G

Sure it might have a laughably bad name, but there’s no way in hell you can laugh at the Samsung Epic 4G’s specs. A part of the Galaxy S family, the Epic 4G is Sprint’s second 4G WiMAX smartphone. To go on sale later this year for an undisclosed price, the Epic 4G has a 4″ WVGA Super AMOLED display, sliding QWERTY keypad, 5 megapixel camera with 720p video capture, front-facing camera for video calling, GPS, Wi-Fi b/g/n, mobile hotspot support for five devices, six-axis motion sensor, 1GHz Hummingbird processor, and 512MB RAM / 1GB ROM. It will come to market running Android 2.1 — with a bit of help from Samsung’s TouchWiz 3.0, naturally — but Sprint has gone on the record as saying an update to Android 2.2 won’t be that far off once the Epic 4G is released. Good to know.

    Sorry, samsung is the deal breaker here. Unless a lot has changed they make a shitty low quality product

    I know about the specs and saw the leaked pix already. I want to know whether, Sprint is going to charge $10 or more for this device like the Evo.

      YES, SPRINT IS GOING TO CHARGE $ 10.00 more to use this phone just like the EVO… Because the phone is the second 4g phone out on the market.

    for sure they are.. just to make a little more cash in their pockets.

    Yes, they will be charging the premium of 10 bucks… still. i just got off the phone with a gal from sprint who informed about this phone but the pricing as well.

    I just want to know how the battery life and physical dimensions will compare to the Evo.

    Personally, anything lighter, smaller, and with longer battery life might be a contender.

    @Shumdit

    Are you serious? Samsung phones have some of the highest build quality out of the barrage of phones out there today. They still manufacture their phones domestically instead of outsourcing it out like HTC or Apple.

    Drop a Samsung smartphone and an iPhone 4 from waist height – time for a screen kit for the latter.

    I kinda wish it was HTC also, but at least it has a keyboard. I want to wait because I heard a rumor that HTC was supposedly coming out with a slide EVO. And the HDMI port only makes perfect sense. As for Sprint haters, however, listen up! Verizon, they charge you for every little thing you do. As much as you charge you BETTAH have a good network. AT&T, hmmm…You have a 2Gb data cap r u SERIOUS? With the data hungry iPhone??? Not to mention, with the crap service AT&T provides, it’s an overpriced Ferrari with no engine or tires. And T-Mobile the false advertise an unlimited plan and the cap your data without telling you…I’m good with Sprint because if you notice, the 4G is being set up in the smaller towns where before there was no service…Sprint isn’t stupid, they know they have to bring it to major cities…And when they do…..OH BOY!

    Does the Epic work while traveling outside the US?
