Nokia N9 spotted in the wild complete with NAM 3G

Why, hello, you thing of questionable sexiness. What we’re looking at here is the Nokia N9 live and in the digital flesh. Negri Electronics, the people that leaked the images, are keeping mum about the specs of the device until they’re ready to publish their full review, but from the images we can clearly see that previous rumors were correct in that there’s an 8 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, front-facing camera with LED flash, sliding QWERTY keypad, nHD display (640×360), and support for the 850/1900 MHz bands of UMTS/HSDPA. It’s clear that this is an early prototype N9 considering its still running Symbian S60 — a platform that will now know will never again grace the Nseries line-up once the N8 is released — but we’re sure if and when Nokia launches the phone it’ll be running MeeGo. In the meantime, hit the jump for a couple more pics.

    MAEMO please!!!!!

  • Topher86

looking at the back, I’m thinking it would be a cool look if it were two-toned.

  • http://c james h jackson jr

hope we get tmobile bands in it so all of us who switched to tmobile for the n900 wont have to go to another network the n8 has tmobile and at&t bands and i hopoe this ends up being the same

    • The Prophet Mohammad

if i were you I’d give up on T-mobile getting cool phones. Not going to to happen. They are the Beta testers for the big 3 providers if anything…

  • Juan

This is not the N9, is the N8 qwerty variant (N8-01 or 02)

    • dans

It could be the N9 hardware running Symbian for testing purposes.

Did you even read the article?

      • http://www.maemo-freak.com christexaport

dans, there is no need to read the article if you’re a Nokia/Symbian/MeeGo user. The N9 will be the highest specced hardware and software ever made on a device, and should rival the EVO, Streak, iPhone4, and HD2 with ease. When is the last time you saw a Nokia flagship NOT using a Carl Zeiss lens? Its their second biggest selling point after Symbian.

Also, Nokia announced that the N8 will be the final Nseries device to run Symbian, meaning all subsequent Nseries devices will run MeeGo or Windows. Any future Symbian devices will be of the C, X, or Eseries, not the Nseries.

Now this COULD be an N8-01, or even an X7+, or an Eseries, which is most likely…

Entel’s a wireless provider in Bolivia. Why the claim of NAM 3g?

    • http://www.maemo-freak.com christexaport

provider doesn’t mean anything to the hardware. I used Euro Symbian 2nd Edition devices with no US 3G for years on TMobileUSA. The voice bands still work, and with WiFi, 3G isn’t needed as much for testing.

  • Vijay

@xman: Maemo has evolved with Nokia-Intel partnership into MeeGo.

@Juan: This is the rumored N9. Nokia doesn’t call two variants of different form factors the same name.

Also… This is a wicked pretty device. Let’s hope the software lives up to the industrial design. I love real keyboards.

    • http://www.maemo-freak.com christexaport

Nokia has totally new naming conventions, and left the hypenated two zeros behind the N8 for a reason. It is either an N8-0x or an Ex device. Doubt its Nseries because of the lack of Carl Zeiss optics, which has been the Nseries advantage for years. They slipped on the N80 and N81, but not since.

HAHAHAHAHA! That phone sucks compared to the iPhone 4, Droid X, or EVO 4G

    • C. Bess

I concur. Is Nokia is looking outside their office windows? Do they check the market or browse the web? Do they care anymore?

    • dans

      Why does it suck?

    • Dave

Your ability to gauge phone specs from unlabeled pictures is amazing.

I bet you’re enjoying not being able to use those toys as phones, thanks to their dodgy antenna designs! :)

That aside, I don’t buy the whole “the Symbian Platform has been relegated to a “test OS”" thing, to be honest.

    • http://www.maemo-freak.com christexaport

Care to explain? Hard facts, not trivial opinions…

  • resident

Companies get away with so much if they have a solid fanbase.

Just look at RIM, or Apple.
Rim never changes and Apple could produce absolute shit, and people still eat it up.

    • Senor Dickhaus

The good news is there are still companies that have to actually work for their success. HTC, now
Palm and even the post RAZR Motorola all need to work for our trust again. Thats good news for us as consumers.

  • resident

The phone is hideous, as is your taste.

The chances of this phone being a success are lower than your grandma’s tits.

  • mingkee

Without AWS, it won’t be complete as NAM 3G.
Moreover, didn’t nokia announced N8 will be the last device running on Symbian?

  • Chona

    Unattractive phone

  • Julien Fourgeaud

Michael, changing the OS on a phone doesn’t happen overnight, this is not the PC world.
That device will be running Symbian.
It might not be an N-series, rather a C-series according to front label and lower specs compared to the N8-00, even if the model number hints an N in the S^3 device info.

Wnen it comes to the N8 being the last N series to run Symbian, I believe the Nokia rep was misquotted.
Noka is now working on Symbian^4 already and I would be surprised if they don’t come up with an N8-02 in 8 months with S^4. the N8 familly might be the highest Symbian will go, N9 being Meego, but it will take time before Meego scales down.

  • win

its not a N9, journalist are retarded these they just copy what the next site says or make it up

  • ThisGuy

Thank You BGR for starting post more Nokia posts! and its good to see unbiased journalism from you guys.

    • http://www.maemo-freak.com christexaport

…now if they could work on the accuracy. I’ve volunteered more than once to do Symbian/MeeGo/Nokia coverage for BGR for years now.

Hey Boy Genius, how about letting me do some posts? Not like I’m not experienced or anything…

  • wallyson

So an N8 with a keyboard? I like the way some companies are calling their keyboard versions “Pro”. I think that kills the confusion on the models.

    • http://www.maemo-freak.com christexaport

Don’t like the Pro moniker myself. Pro implies better grade, but they usually downgrade the camera for thinness sake. Just put a Q for QWERTY or T for T9 in the model name, like VivazQ or N8-Q.

  • CanisManis

christexaport is spot on: this is NOT the N9. Leaks have already confirmed that there will be three N8s:

    1) The N8-00, which has already been announced
    2) The N8-01, which is this device, with qwerty and lower spec imagining
    3) The N8-02, which is like the 00, but with lighter RAM and also lower spec imaging.

This is the strategy we are already seeing with the different versions of the X6.

The N9 is a very, very different beast.
