iPhone 4 proximity sensors not functioning properly?

Rumor

iPhone-4-1

Another day, another problem for the iPhone 4. Today’s hot topic issue deals with its proximity sensor. According to a group of concerned iPhone owners on 9to5mac, the proximity sensor on the iPhone 4 isn’t quite sensitive enough and carriers a large potential for in-call issues. Users are reporting that the sensor has a tendency to think the phone is away from one’s face when it is in fact not. This can lead to user’s cheeks doing everything from muting calls to hitting the end button. Our devices aren’t suffering from this issue, but based upon what we’ve read there are quite a lot that are. How is your proximity sensor working out?

I am having the same issue. But after running so many tests, i figured out that the issue only exists when the Wi-fi is turned on. If the Wi-fi is turned off, the proximity sensor just works fine.

It probably has to do with some kind of settings when the iphone wireless is turned on, it gets sensitive with the whole facetime thing.

I do of course hope people understand I was JOKING with my last comment, and merely quoting Steve Jobs’ terse reply…although I do find it quite comical that I already received a negative vote, LOL!

I have no idea what you are talking about as far as reception. I have not had any reception problems. (Even in the old 3G case!) E-mails that I receive get to me instantly. Text messages are instantaneous. I can’t comment on reception problems. I am not having any. The only problem I have had is trying to make phone calls with my new iPhone 4 in a 3G case. It blocks the proximity sensor. I thought that I made that clear. After taking the iPhone 4 out of my old 3G case, I am having no problems with the proximity sensor. As a matter of fact, I am beginning to like my new iPhone more and more every day. It’s new, has more features than my 3G and I think it’s pretty cool! And as I get more used to it, I”m LOVING IT! Sorry you are having problems with yours. I hope you get it figured out.
    Peace,
    Mike

I didn’t have this issue until yesterday. Now I am and the button on top will now end calls when pushed.

I have this issue too, but i think this is the sort of thing that can be fixed in a future software upgrade.

I’ve got this problem and Apple is providing a new iPhone 4 in an hour (in store replacement through Genius Bar). Really annoying to be on a call and hear, “beep, beep, boop, beep…” followed by the realization you’ve hung up on the caller.

I have figured out how this is happening. On a call last night, I realized the screen turns back on if the phone is turned from the vertical position to the horizontal position (I was lying down when I noticed it coming on). As a test, I placed my finger over the proximity sensor when it was in the vertical position and the screen turns off. Then I turned the phone to the horizontal position while still keeping my finger on the proximity sensor. The screen turned on even though my finger was on the sensor. It turned back off when I returned to the vertical position.

So far every one of my calls has been muted by my cheek. Everyone

went to the apple store to report this problem ..it does it on every call .. the genius guy put his finger over the sensor 4 times and said nothings wrong … I about came unglued .. suppose to be getting a new replacement .. we’ll see

It’s not that it’s not sensitive enough. It’s that you can still “push the buttons” even though the screen is dark.

Try it: dial a number, put one finger over the sensor so the screen goes black, then push on the screen with the other finger… remove the first finger and see what cool buttons you pushed!

I think everybody should have a look at this post that was deleted from the Apple support forums by Apple. It seems that they have no interest in fixing this issue or even making a statement on it unless they are forced to by a lawsuit or something to that effect. I am VERY disappointed in Apple. I have been a fan for over 15 years. It seems as if they have forgotten who they are and just becoming a big bully now. (see below)

I told him there are nearly 70 pages on the Apple Support forum for this exact issue. He immediately dismissed my comment and said, “We typically don’t lend too much credence to support forum posts…” Ok….

He gave the phone back to me and said, “There doesn’t appear to be any issues with your phone. You’ll just have to get used to the new Proximity Sensor location on the iPhone 4…” I was like, “Ummm… Huh?” He refused to exchange the phone.

I immediately went back to Best Buy and the Mobile Phone sales guy said they’ve already had 9 of their 30 launch day iPhones returned due to antenna and proximity sensor issues. He put me on a list to exchange the phone. Luckily, I have 45 days to exchange the phone, since I’m a Best Buy silver rewards card holder…

Wow just cause of this attitude of apple employees They are being SUED by lawyers well apple you should take this time and save yourself from another class action law suit for proximity sensors

PS ~ Apple mods now don’t be wasting your time deleting this post since I have a right to say stuff when you guys sell us your defective product and I think if apple doesn’t address this issue then we all should return the Iphone 4 at lease those who are having this proximity issues.

And also apple instead of deleting peoples post how about investigating why Iphone 4 proximity sensor is going haywire and maybe you will save yourself from another law suit and also people who are having problem with there iphone 4 with the proximity sensor do report it to KCR LEGAL LAW FIRM

I’ve had the iPhone 4 since launch date, I didn’t know what was happening or even what it was called…but yes this has been an issue since I walked out the store. I’m having to open other apps just to keep from ending, speaker phone, FaceTime, muting my calls etc…very freaking annoying. Thank goodness I have no reception issues. Help, tell Apple to fix this ASAP.

Solution for iPhone 4 proximity sensor not working: enable rotation. I found that if the (software) rotation is locked, then the proximity sensor does not work. If I allow rotation, then the proximity sensor works fine.

This is a problem im having since the first day i got my iphone…..please fix this!

  • CLS

I am also having this problem. I have inadvertently ended numerous important phone calls because of proximity sensor failure. I would appreciate it if Apple could at least acknowledge this issue and offer an explanation/resolution.

  • VIKKI

We purchased 5 iphone 4′s. So far only one of them is having this issue and it has done it for the beginning. I wasn’t sure what the problem was because I had never owned an Iphone before. But now I realize that it is not something they all do and it is terrible. I have problems with almost every call I make. I don’t think I can handle this.

Like all of you who are being driven crazy by this phone, I too have had more than my shares worth of trouble with the sensor. My wife hates it even more than I do. But here is a discovery I made when I ran some experiments with my phone today. Due to the fact that the sensitivity is set to a shorter distance and also due to the fact that the sensor is now positioned over the receiver, it is now possible to position the phone so that the sensor is pointing down the ear canal. This causes the sensor to think that the phone is away from the face and then the cheek will trigger the, now active, buttons. By moving the phone either forward or backward from the ear canal causes the display to blank out. BTW, those of us with larger ears and therefore wider canals tend to have a harder time finding the right position to hold the phone and still hear it clearly. Hopefully Apple will set the sensor to a farther distance to help clear up this issue.

Had same problem with my iphone 4.  Sometimes the sensor would work perfectly but 90% of the time it would not lock the screen during a call, leading me to put calls on mute, facetime, speaker, you name it!  After a call with an Apple rep. she informed me that if I have a protective film on my screen of the phone it may be blocking the sensor from working correctly.  Sure enough I removed the protective film on my screen and the sensor now works fine.  Try this if you have a protective screen on your iPhone 4.
