Apple iPhone 4 and 3G go under the microscope

Before you bemoan the retina display of the iPhone 4, take a look at these images from Ryan White and Bryan Gauntt, two PhD candidates from Penn State University. The pair compared the iPhone 4 and the 3G under a microscope and uncovered the stark difference in pixel size between the two displays. The iPhone 3G has pixels that measure 13 x 40 microns, while the iPhone 4 comes in with pixels that measure 6.5 x 20 microns. That means for every single iPhone 3G pixel, there are four pixels on the iPhone 4. Practically speaking, this higher pixel density will make images and text appear sharper on the iPhone 4 and is most revealing in the images the duo captured. Check them out after the jump and let us know what you think in the comments.

@Eric, I don’t think there is such a thing as the best smartphone since everyones expectations are different. The reason why apple gets that distinction is because it generates tremendous sales and that’s the bottom-line for all companies. the one aspect no ones really talked about is the built in gyroscope on the iphone4. This on a phone has a lot of possibilities particularly on gaming. I can see others following. I like apple but not a fanatic about it and barring the antenna issue, it’s a good phone with a lot of potential for developers. Guerilla Bob smokes on the iPhone 4 faster and smoother. Pics and videos taken from my 3GS are vastly improved with the screen Rez.

I am not questioning how good this screen is, because it is good, but BGR have you ever noticed that when Apple’s reputation plummets, so does yours? Quite coincidental for a techblog which is supposed to be impartial.

You’d do yourself a favour by trying less hard to suck up to Apple. Honestly, if I looked up fanboy in the dictionary, they would link me to this site.

I picked up my iPhone 4 yesterday. I haven’t had any problems with my phone losing bars, no yellows dots either. I think that it is out there but I also think it’s far less than everyone on here is making it out to be. Keep hatin’

With all due respect, when someone who (i) uses a device the way the vast majority of people would use it and (ii) has a legitimate complaint about a design flaw gets the following response from a company:

“Hey, don’t use it that way”

      -or-

“Hey, I know you’ve made almost a $2000 commitment to my company and AT&T by purchasing this device, but we want to further pad our bottom line by making you purchase more accessories to make our device function the way it should”

Well, you deserve about all the hate you’re going to get. It recalls to mind that old joke where the patient tells the doctor, “it hurts when I touch here” and the doctor responds “well, don’t touch there.”

Would you be happy with that “diagnosis”?? No. Of course not. It’s utter horseshit. I mean, seriously… just, please, stop pretending this is irrational, brand-related hate and realize it’s real people having real problems because of a @#$%-ty design. It doesn’t whether design flaw manifests itself in every unit. It’s happened enough that the entire @#$%’ing web is ablaze with. What type of piss poor defense, if, indeed, it is a defense at all is this from iPhone users (and even more damningly, from Apple)?

I firmly believe in the “do no evil” principle so when I see the meglomaniac from cupertino violating the first amendment, I am uncomfortable with his products.

When countries of the past acted in the way Apple is today, our fore-fathers went to war and defeated them.

What are we doing? We are dazzled and entertained so we give constitution violators a free pass.

Our grand fathers would be ashamed of us.

I find it funny those of you calling BGR biased. They report on both android and Apple with positive and negative. What seems biased is all the new android fans wanting more Apple bashing. Enough already.

The antenna issue isn’t a big deal. I got my quattro yesterday and I have ZERO issues. Get over it. No worse then an Evo screen peeling off. Doesn’t happen to all of them. Just stop your bitching.

    • Will

Agreed. I got mine yesterday too, it works perfectly. The screen is so sharp, especially when reading smaller text. It’s amazing, and BGR isn’t biased to say so. Look at the video summary of Droid X… They love it, and used the 4 to shoot it, and will use the Droid to shoot the iPhone video. Seems to me that BG is just accurate, not biased…

    • Dan

I think what you meant to say is that the “antenna issue isn’t a big deal [_to you_]“, because you one of the fortunate ones not having the problem. The better and more applicable question is this: if you were having that problem (and some people very clearly are), would you be satisfied with a response from Apple instructing you that your device, to function properly, requires that you handle/hold it in a certain way?

And, frankly, the Evo screen peeling off was a big deal just as this issue for the iPhone is. I have an android phone. How incredibly selfish it would be of me, if I had bought an Evo that didn’t have the problem, to merely say, “it isn’t an issue” because I was one of the lucky ones to get a unit without that particular defect. Self-centered much?

Look, I’m happy you (and Will) got a unit that wasn’t defective. And, generally, I think and hope that most people don’t want others to be excited about a product just to have those hopes dashed by a critical design flaw prevalent in some of the produced units. But don’t undermine everyone who did get a defective unit by artificially downplaying the justifiable angst they have. You’re just contributing to the problem by describing their plight as “bitching.” This is Apple’s @#$% up. Now, they need to step up and fix it for those having a real and demonstrable problem.

  • Valaar

Dan, my comment about bitching isn’t directed at those having the issue. It was directed at those Fandroids pointing it out as a issue not to buy it but don’t say the same about their precious Android phone of the month, be it Evo or Droid X or whatever trumps those two next month.

Am I lucky, I guess say so… But my point is the Android fans on this board have become blood hungry for anything negative on Apple. They feed on it. The moment we get positive news they cry fowl. It’s really annoying. BGR does a good job. Apple or Android. Period.
