Original DROID to get Froyo and Flash before the DROID X?

Rumor

droidx-droid-froyo

A leaked internal memo purportedly from Verizon Wireless suggests that the original DROID will receive Android 2.2 and Flash 10.1 support before its bigger brother, the DROID X. The memo lists late July as the target date for the DROID 2.2 update and late August as the target date for the DROID X. That is one whole month of Flash and Froyo time for DROID owners, while the DROID X owners sit on the sidelines with Android 2.1. DROID X owners can console themselves with the fact that these dates are unconfirmed and often subject to change. Hopefully, the gap between the updates will narrow and both handsets will get Android 2.2 around the beginning of August. Fingers crossed.

How much you wanna bet late July turns into late August, which turns into late Fall 2010?

  • Matt

There is no Android fragmentation damn it!!

    • whaaaa!!!

      derp

  • Mike01gsr

That’s the way it should be. Older brother gets the new stuff then younger brother gets hand me downs..lol I think the Droid X should be released with 2.2. Either way my Droid is waiting for 2.2.

  • gunther6456

Why would you hope that the Droid takes longer to get the 2.2 update exactly?

  • Shumdit

But will flash actually work on it? This is not a jab at android, but at adobe.

    • WalterSobchak

Flash works pretty great on my droid clocked at 600mhz. I think this 1GHz OMAP oughtta do the job just fine! That is of course until the dualcore 1ghz comes out.

      • Shumdit

Then battery life will concern me unless they know something no one else does. At least the droid x is thin enough in the mid section that a larger thicker battery might not kill it’s form factor

  • Raj

Why wouldn’t the droid get it first. It runs vanilla android. It’ll take a bit longer to port ninjablur to Froyo

Does that mean both Droids (Motorola Droid and HTC Droid Incredible)?

Newly baked roms are the only reason I hope that the DI gets a real root. Waiting for these updates from VZ is ridiculous. Per my experience with the Blackberry line,I’m with Joel in his line of thinking. I’m not holding my breath. But if Froyo is out and VZ withholds it for months on end, that’ll pretty much seal the deal for me. I’ve been teetering on the edge of moving to ATT and the iPhone. The coverage here in Madison is excellent (I know it’s bad in big cities) but ATT users don’t have to wait for iPhone updates or months on end for user accessories (like oh, the DI video out cable that STILL isn’t available?!?!?).

    • WalterSobchak

Yeah you know when your next update will be with the iphone….NEXT JUNE!!!
Order a cable off of ebay. Of coures 3 year old proprietary apple connectors aren’t hard to stock for 49.99.
You know what, go to att and get an iphone so you will whine in a different thread.

the writing is already on the wall for the Incredible. I mean is there even a way to root the phone besides jumping up and down for 10 seconds, rubbing your tummy clockwise and lifting your left foot?

  • jonfu

when does my cliq get froyo, or my g1 for that matter

  • Sean

I guess this makes sense with the fact the original Droid is running stock Android and the Droid X is running Shadow Blur…

  • Apple’s End Soon Comes

    Can’t wait!

  • Millionpatheticdroids

See this is why I don’t want a damn android phone!

You have a million android phones out there and half of them can’t even get a proper update or at least all update at once!

Look what went on with the HTC Hero, Samsung Moment, Samsung Behold II, Motorola Cliq…

I mean seriously i can go on..

    Backflip?
    Devour?

    Please!

  • Whatsa “sell” fone?

If you have a android SMARTphone then you should know how to root. otherwise, don’t complain about what phone is getting what update and when.

**moto droid-beta froyo with beta flash**

remember kids, the iPhone is not a SMARTphone until you jailbreak it ;)

    • sole

by that logic an android phone is not a smartphone until you root it. which i bet 90% of android users know nothing about.

      • ChocoTaco

That notion doesn’t hold up because you have to jailbreak an iPhone to do most of the stuff Android does stock. Rooting Android takes it to a whole other level.

      • sole

when you say most of the stuff you mean?

    • Eddie4

      Ridiculous….

  • peta

@Millionpatheticdroids I didn’t buy any of those phones, what’s your point?
HP, Dell, IBM, E machine, Sony, lenovo, Acer, Asus……
    You must hate PC’s too?

Its quite simple, if you don’t like something, don’t buy it. Notice I threw E machine on the list.

  • Patrick

It depends on the manufacturer. If they push out updates and keep devices relevant then buy their products.if they don’t seem to care about older models only their newest than buy another manufacturer that does update.

  • Mojo

Hey BGR.. why not list the original source droidforums.net. , not phonearena.com.

  • StevenGlansburg

Android looks more and more like a pain in the ass compared to the iphone 4….I just don’t think I can do att. Oh well, checking the iphone out after work…taking the credit card with me just in case…

    • Rick James

Grab some 3d glasses also. I hear the yellow spots is for 3d coming out later this year.

    • Emily

Yeah, having freedom, freedom of customization, getting updates months before the slow ass manufacturer finally updates it. The customized systems apps that 3rd party developers improve upon the stock apps that i can install. Freedom to install what I want. Having the choice to decide how I want my phone to be. It’s such a pain in the ass. I really wish I was on AT&T so I could get that smartphone for dummies.

  • Cellenator

    Score can’t wait!

  • Eddie4

Not everyone needs bleeding edge updates every week. Android is stable and fast. I’m totally OK with waiting for 2.2. Once Ginger arrives, thing will slow to once a yr anyway.

Only a teenager would change carriers for a phone..

  • Emily

My original day one Droid has had Froyo and Flash for a month already. With ALL the features of Froyo.
Can’t say the same with your iphone 3G and iOS4 can ya?

    Yes, yes, YES!

    I hope…
