Nokia confirms Symbian is on the way out for Nseries devices

No real surprise here, but at least it’s now official. Nokia confirmed on Thursday that it will no longer offer Symbian-based handsets its Nseries line-up after the N8 is released. In its place, Nokia will be looking to MeeGo, an open source mash-up of Nokia’s Maemo and Intel’s Moblin. This is a pretty smart move for Nokia’s flagship line, especially considering the horrible tongue lashing dealt to Symbian^3-powered N8 by Russian mobile guru Eldar Murtazin, no?

How about they say goodbye to symbian all together. The E series is the only nokia worth getting… if it had a decent os…

Because competition in the feature phone market is still good in some areas?

Thank god. Symbian sucks. I can’t wait until all of the super Euro trash come in saying how sophisticated it is. It’s the fucking MS DOS of mobile OS’s. It needs to die already.

Thank you sir. THIS POST IS ABSOLUTELY CORRECT.

Android is doing great things for Motorola.

Actually, I love Symbian. I’ve been using it for years. I had the 6600,6680,N95,5800, and i have the N97 now. i loved all of them but the N97 is sluggish now. I cant wait for N8 to come out because the hardware on it is so much better. I’m getting the N8 when it comes out.

symbian is kick ass…its essentially android being as they run on java…but also symbian can emulate android 1.5 very capably

So Nokia have found it impossible to make one OS fit from bottom to top, and intend to let Meego take over at the very top of their range while Symbian will make up the majority of their phone sales, sitting squarely in the middle of their range – with its much reduced hardware cost (and better battery life – which Moore does not help other manufacturers with much), giving a BOM other OSs cannot hope to match.

It will be interesting to see how easy Android finds it to move into the mid-market given this experience.

Symbian is far and away the best keyboard-driven smartphone OS out there. I hope the release version of ^3 (and not the early version Eldar is “reviewing”) makes it more competitive on touch too.

Every single blog seems to have got the wrong spin on this story and is overplaying it. This isn’t really even news. For the best analysis, see Rafe Blandford’s fact-filled piece at http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/11732_The_changing_shape_of_Nseries.php

      Steve,

I read the article and it’s EXCELLENT ! I’ve been following Symbian since I purchased my Nokia E71x, which is an excellent phone.

I also remember that Maemo was announced as the OS for the N Series last year, before the appearance of MeeGo, so Nokia’s announcement isn’t really that earth-shattering except to the illiterate and ignorant.

I also like the idea that all of Nokia’s phones from the the lowest end to the high-end will have an excellent OS on them.

Why doesn’t Android do the same ?

It’s very simple actually. Symbian will be OS for mid-end devices. MeeGo will go to high-end.

I was a long time symbian Nseries guy before moving to Apple and it’s sad to see symbian not coming up par with competition. Nokia does make cheap to mid- range phones for the 3rd world though and that’s one of the reason they have the world market. I still like Nokia and wish them luck and who knows I might just end up with Nokia again.
