Holding the iPhone 4 affects the antenna, degrades cellular signal?

Rumor

iPhone-4-1

A growing number of iPhone 4 owners are reporting that holding the iPhone 4 has an effect on the signal strength of the handset. Multiple videos demonstrate this unusual behavior in which the iPhone, when held in the palm of one’s hand, will lose signal strength by going from 5 bars of coverage to no service in less than a minute. To reverse this loss, one only needs to put the phone down and the signal strength will be restored. Reports are also circulating in the forums with owners reporting this anomaly and suggesting the use of case may inhibit this disturbance in the antenna. Anyone else have this experience with their brand, spanking new iPhone 4? Hit the jump for a few videos demonstrating this loss of signal.

Thanks to all who sent this in!

wow this is bad – when I call someone and use the phone in my left hand I am can barley hear them because the cell signal is so weak. I really hope Apple can fix this or I am returning this phone and then just going to wait for the Droid.

    User error? Design flaw? Neither.

So many people are totally unaware of a thing called “manufacturing error”.
(Apple does not manufacture *ANY* iPhone. Never has. Never will.)

The simple reason why 1000s of phones have this problem… and 100000s do NOT:

The company that builds the phone (not Apple) let a small number of phones slip through quality-control inspections.

*ALL* iPhone4s should have an insulating coating on the antenna…. but a small percent of them were accidentally shipped without it.

Here’s an instant 3/8″ solution for a few cents at your local store:

Am able replicate the same diminution of reception with iPhone 3G running iOS4 – just not quite as dramatic. Have always experienced fluctuations in bar strength and an occasional No Service, but had always blamed ATT. Now I’m thinking it may be the way I’ve held the phone.
