Wave wasn’t the only Google service to be opened up to the public this week, as Google has now lifted its invite only restriction on its popular Google Voice service. It’s still only available to residents of the United States, but now the only thing standing between you and: free calls, free SMS messages (to anywhere in the U.S. and Canada), voice mail transcripts, and having one number for all of your phones is logging into voice.google.com with your Google account and picking out a number.Read

I’ll get more interested in this when they allow number porting.

When will Google make it available outside the USA, specifically Canada?

  • grrr

Now all we need is support for picture messaging.

    • Steve Jobs

You do not need picture messaging. I determined long ago that my underlings do not need MMS when they have email capabilities. I caved due to public pressure though.

    now about that iphone app.

*cough* Maybe you should upgrade to a real phone. Maybe something Android based. ;)

After all, its not like Apple likes supporting Google Voice apps, so why should google support android ones.

Besides…more users might switch to use the Voice aspect. :)

Blame Apple. Google wanted a Voice app for the iPhone but Apple nixed it, as usual.

i dont even know how to send a mesage from my droid with this app

Maybe you should just go back to a feature phone then because clearly a smart phone is not for you.

Oh awesome! This is so great…WRONG still not available in Canada :(

      Blame Canada? =)

Outside US? Need to get US covered first. I live in a 50,000 population university (20,000) town.
    Nada. Zip. Zilch.

Google voice already covers everyone in the USA; everyone with a cellphone.

It’s free for a reason. Basically they track EVERY last button you press and most likely have speech recognition so if you talk about Pizza Hut to your friends chances are next time you surf the net you’ll have pizza ads on every site you visit.

    • boogalooboy

Yep, every last bit of info google can steal from you they will, and this time you would have signed up willingly, just dont send any passwords or usernames in case it gets “accidentally” stored in a completely random but strangely compatible database….

Canada is same as Avganistan….No Google voice for Canada ;)

    • StevenHamburg

      Avganistan huh? Nice…

  • iMiiTH

I don’t really care that it’s not available outside the USA, I still wouldn’t trust Google with my mail. Let alone my voice conversation and text messages.

I’ve been using GV (mostly for my voicemail) for almost a year now and I’ve been really happy with it.

  • rudy

Does this mean I can go with a data only plan from t-mobile? if so that sounds like a way to save money for me.

  • Ryan F

I’ve been using GV for a few months now, and it has saved me hundreds of dollars because of the free texting.

I can understand why people will be paranoid about their information but as a college student this has helped me tons, and it has impressed my employers because when they get sent to my voicemail they get a personal “Hello Dave” greeting.

2 thumbs up for google voice, now make it voip over 3G already so I can have UNLIMITED calling for FREE
