droid-x-photos-sample

It might not be the most exciting leak surrounding the upcoming Motorola Droid X, but these sample photos taken with the phones 8 megapixel are intriguing nonetheless. Thanks to EXIF data we’ve been able to rule out that these images are a hoax. And that’s a great thing, because anyone who remembers how bad the original Droid was with photos in the early days surely will be beside themselves with joy over these snapshots. Hit the jump to check out another sample.

Wow the pictures are amazing, almost enough to justify the hump on the X, in order to accomodate a stunning camera.

    • Scott

We’ll see how it stacks up to the iPhone 4 once there is some real testing done after release.

Nevertheless these pictures look very nice.

      • Tomfromalbes

True story. Once both are out in wild, we’ll see how they stack up. I don’t fully believe the average user can get the type of shots Apple showcased, nor will the average Droid user got the picture quality shown above.

      • MacMan

Agreed. The evo has a 8 megapixel camera as well and most people complain about the quality. Just need a little practice to get some great shots.

Are we all looking at the same photos?

These aren’t exactly amazing. They’re good but they’re not so awesome a user couldn’t replicate them.

iPhone 4 will most likely produce better photos than the Droid X.

      • ChocoTaco

The iPhone 4 pictures that were leaked thus far looked horribly overprocessed. It looked like someone turned the sharpness on their TV up to max, then tripled it. These Droid X pictures are far more pleasing to my eyes than the iPhone 4 pictures. Time will tell once the phones are released.

        Baaaaaaaaaaaa!!

      • reitex

No less importantly, the testing better be done blind, with the comments left open for a while before the identities of the phones taking the photos are revealed. Apple fanboys and Android fanboys are incredibly attached to their devices…

      • http://www.bgr.com NewsWorthy

I would have to agree that a blind test would work best so as not to be biased. Looking forward to the poll on which pics look better.

I don’t see the big deal about the hump. At the hump, it’s still thinner than a 3GS. The rest of the phone is one of the thinnest phones in the world. Sitting flat on a table, the hump at the most actually benefits visibility by offering a slight viewing angle, at the least does nothing at all. I didn’t like the hump either until I actually let it sink in a bit and realized it shouldn’t affect anything at all.

      • Jake

Well said, I agree, its an advantage not a problem.

I get the same discount on voice and data for Verizon and At&T. I can’t wait to try this and the iphone 4. Either way I don’t have to pay the ridiculous normal monthly price. So BGR, a X v. Iphone 4 comparison would rock some time in the near future….

    • EGY

Share with us in what consist the supposed discount and how you got it.

      • gilligan156

Probably an employer discount. For example, Gamestop employees get an 8% service discount at verizon and a 12% service discount at sprint.

      • Ethan

If it’s like the employer discount I get from UPS it’s pretty good.

T-Mobile- 15% discount on rate plans, waiver of activation fee.

AT&T- 20% off listed rate plans, and free to discount phones

Verizon- 22% off listed rate plans, everything else 22% at the Verizon store with 50% of phones.

Sprint- 25% off listed rate plans and 50% off to free on Phones.

      • StevenGlansburg

I got a job with the help of the two college degrees I worked my ass off for the past 7 years to get. That’s how.

    • gilligan156

While you get the same discount, keep in mind the differences in AT&T and VZW’s data policies.

Before discount, $30 at the VZW gets you unlimited data.

At AT&T data is tiered, $15/mo gives you 200mb, $25/mo gives you 2GB, and every GB over 2GB is another $10.

In other words if you use 1.8GB, the better deal is AT&T($25 v $30) but if you use your phone any more than 2GB – I know I do – VZW is better. If you use 3.1GB of data, AT&T is $45 while VZW is still $30.

Food for thought. Can’t wait to see both phones.

      • Shumdit

Unless you are already on the AT&T unlimited plan and then it makes no difference.

    • FriarNurgle

Same here on the employer discounts with AT&T and Verizon. Making the decision really tough. We all know the network differences between the two carriers. However AT&T is supposedly working on that issue. iPhone4 is really really cool. I’m concerned about the glass edges. Droidx look really good but am concerned about the custom UI screwing future updates and am wondering how comfortable it’ll feel in the pocket.

  • Sif

Full resolution shows lots of fringing/poor edge detail, but cropped down looks very nice. Not bad for a mobile/phone camera.

    • Joseph

Agreed, no mobile-phone camera will be better than it’s lens. Fringing is an artifact of the lens though some correction/exacerbation can be done on the sensor itself.

  • http://rpipunter.com Disappointed

are you kidding – these pictures do not look amazing. They look like a base phone camera from a few years ago. Disappointed.

    • Rob D.

Really? Care you link to some examples so you don’t look like a complete idiot?

  • Peter

In Engadget’s exclusive 1st look into the DROID X, the pics didn’t look this good…hmmmm???

    • Ethan

Well if you read the preview. She mentioned that she never used the touch screen to take the pictures. She used the button which she says was hard to press which made her take the picture moving, there for making the pictures blurry/not that good as these are.

      Quote from Engadget Article:
“In addition, the camera button on the phone was super stiff, so when we went to shoot a pic the entire thing shook and blurred the image. You can see what we are talking about in the gallery below.”

  • JoeBold

now compared to the Incredible, how will it stack up? this and the 720P HD video is a deal breaker for me. the large 4.3 screen? well there is a Ipad for that. the incredible has the right size for a smartphone.

    • me

dramatically faster to the incredible, verizon is phasing out the incredible according to some sources.

      • destardi

        Um, no.

Go back and revisit your sources.

The different sku that is getting phased out is the Incredible being sold w/o a SD card.

    Gilligan156,

I get 15% for both companies so that is something to consider. I like how over the weekend I was in remote kentucky and was able to use my friends droid with 3G to get world cup and mlb scores quick like. My friends iphones and my cliq (roaming on at&t) were a little slower with edge so that is another consideration. I’m usually in big cities but having 3G everywhere is nice. I have to try to use over 2GB of data usually even using a ton of streaming radio.

Its all going to come down to what I experience from both in real life. Specs are great on paper, but I need real hands on.

    • JoeBold

your mistaken with your broad dismissal over remote rural places vs big cities. first, ATT sucks in many big cities as well, just ask many in NYC, second, in the big populated areas surrounding NYC, specifically the 100+ miles north of the city is virtually a dead zone for 3G for ATT customers. and that is a area of millions of residents, where EVDO 3G is alive and kicking, and ATT, well, is waiting for the all new ‘rethink ATT’ logo we were promised months ago.
so, if remote Kentucky is your word of choice, so be it. millions are dependent on service, and Verizon is handing it them, rather strong.

      • StevenGlansburg

I’m definitely considering that. Ultimately I will likely go with Verizon so I can have better coverage and insurance on my phone. 13.99 monthly for iphone insurance and a lackluster network is not worth it to me.

  • Shumdit

    I like the pics personally

  • http://maggadget.com Zaib Ali

i am definitely going to get a Droid x of myself

  • StevenGlansburg

Can’t wait to see what goes down tomorrow. Either way it appears I won’t have to wait long too decide between the two since the X is getting unleashed tomorrow.

  • destardi

    On release day, I’m THERE.

  • RobertM

Holy crap those pictures look amazing, especially for a phone!!

  • I Wish Miguel Alvarez Was Here

My off-the-cuff homemade smut is going to look SPECTACULAR with this phone!

  • chingy

nice! they look great but i know you can mess around with the pics quality and change it up. phone size won’t be an issue for me cause i don’t wear chicks clothing. until vzw gets the iphone i’m not thinking about it at all. once it happens maybe i’ll compare the two.

  • arirang

for sharpness and clarity, it’s not the # of pixels that matter, it’s the pitch. light photons diffract less through a tunnel than a cone. with smaller pixels and more density on a small area, detail is LOST due to the low dynamic range inherent in high angled pitch. therefore, neither the iphone nor ANY phone of EQUAL megapixel can claim its camera to be better than the other. UNLESS it has a better lens [and/or its coating].
advertising more density gets the fanboys attention but not photographers like myself.
