Apple sells its 3 millionth iPad in 80 days

80 days. That’s all it took Apple to sell 3 million iPads the world over. Who knows how many it would have sold if it weren’t for that pesky 7 to 10 day shipping delay. In other iPad related news, the Cupertino company also announced today that there are now more than 11,000 native iPad applications in the iTunes App Store.

And everyone who sees mine first says “oh wow I haven’t seen one of those yet” and then they say “i have to get me one of those”…

Where’s all “once the Apple Fanboys stop buying them, the sales will plummett” people?

      3 million! That’s a lot of Fanboys.

    • Chris

Do most of you guys carry them in Rhinestone messenger bags? Why not get a laptop so you can be actually be productive?

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/PACMan3000/ Paul A. Chapel

Man, Steve Jobs must be kicking himself for not allowing Flash!

    • Jarrett

That’s funny right there, I don’t care who you are.

      • Sugar Grove

Bet they’re busier than a set of jumper cables at a hillbilly’s funeral.

      • Jarrett

        @ Sugar Grove,

        Defibrillator?

  • akri

i was skeptical at first of it..but once i touched it..i was hooked…i wish much success to apple with the ipad/iphone/mac and all their products..i love them!

    • Shantanu

I bought one and returned it for a refund. It’s an extremely limited device and the new Android tablets that are coming out with full support for Adobe Flash will be far superior in every way.

      • Jarrett

        @ Shantanu,

That was funny too. People and jokes are killing it today. I am not sure which was more hysterical the part about buying an iPad and returning it (rich) or the part about all the Android tablets “soon” to be released.

      • Jarrett

Why are you people dropping the -’s on this guy/girl? That was a very funny post.

      • Adam

I call BS, but hey post whatever makes you feel cool!

      • Shumdit

Get your head out if your ass shantanu. I doubt you purchased one, and you can’t claim to know anything about the android pads since they aren’t out and when they finally do hit the market, let’s see how the public reacts. 3 million in 80 days? Not In an android fanboys wildest dreams. I like android (but prefer apples os over it) but you won’t see those kind of sales numbers anytime soon. Hell, the iPad’s sakes are supply limited or we could be at 4-6 million by now.

    • Rosario

I was the same way and when I finally used it I saw what the big deal was. However while I will probably buy one some day, it wont be anytime soon. I dont have any use for it since I have my ipod touch and a tablet pc, plus I dont read that much so the ebooks are not a big deal to me.

When Im able to buy more books that my classes use, or when Im able to take notes easier in class on it (something similar to OneNote, probably with an unofficial stylus) then I would buy it in a instant.

  • C. Bess

Innovation should be rewarded. Apple made a tablet that people want to use.

    • com

      Agreed….hard to argue with that.

    • Jane Seymour

It’s so plain for everyone to see, that it’s amazing why some people still badmouth Apple products.
The iPhone changed the way consumers use cell phones, and made it a total success. Now the iPad has done the same thing for tablets. Nobody wanted one until the iPad came out.

  • Goodman

I think Apple deserves a lot of credit for turning tablets from a tiny niche to a big success, by creating a tablet that’s inexpensive, lightweight, easy to use and with a long-lasting battery. Other companies like Google will follow in their footsteps (and that’s good, because every market needs competition) but it was Apple that saw that a mainstream touch computer couldn’t just run PC software without a keyboard and mouse.

    • Jarrett

      @ Goodman,

I agree that every market needs competition but the problem is that most people confuse imitation with competition. Apple has clearly said in the past “The only company Apple competes with is Apple.”

  • Jarrett

As was mentioned on another site (Gizmodo) that is 26 sold every minute. So literally Apple is selling 1 every 2.307692307692308 seconds. At two million Apple was selling one every 3 seconds. Looks like sales are picking up to me. Okay, maybe they will start slowly down now?

  • MikeD

    The tablet that sells itself.

I really think the fact that Geek on the “Computing Purity” tip who hate the iPad to death are just helping the iPad.

  • drizzy

droid fanboys… speak up and try to call 3 million people, fanboys. Sorry but youre the fanboys if you hate on this success. They changed the game yet again, and it kills all of your droid fags inside that they continue to dominate.

I just sit back, and laugh as my stock continues to grow.

    • Jarrett

And I sit back and frown at the fact that I have been in AAPL since ’07. Luckily I have made a little money in other sectors but still would have made a little more just hanging on to AAPL. I guess you can’t win them all…….. unless your name is Apple.

      • Jarrett

        Have = Haven’t

    • MEH

You sound like the biggest fanboy of them all. I like Apple but its comments like yours that make me cringe with disgust.

      Lame!

  • Bub

Did the price go up to 499 for the base model? I thought it was announced cheaper…

    • Bub

Anyone? Simple yes or no would be awesome. Thanks.

      • doug

        nope, always been $499 base

      • Bub

        Thanks Doug!

      • http://killmoms.tumblr.com killmoms

Nope, same price it’s been since day one.

      • Jarrett

        @ Bub,

Starting price has always been $499 (USD)

  • Kay

I’ve still not seen an iPad ‘in the wild’

  • Tomfromalbes

Hard to argue with numbers. For all the hate on Apple products they sure do sell well, funny how that works.

  • slammer

Being 50 yrs old, I figured that maybe I shouldn’t be so closed minded and give Apple another shot and try them again. While I found the ipad and iphone groundbreaking in terms of technical advances and offerings, I found my overall user experience less than satisfactory. Don’t get me wrong. The interface experience is wonderful. The choice of being able to do and get what I want is seriously degraded by the lockdown of Apple. So things haven’t changed and the precise reason I stopped doing Business with Apple, has remained. The ipad in my opinion is just an oversized ipod touch with a few added features.

I give Apple much credit for selliing this many ipads. But I also give the users more credit for being able to shell out top dollar for the product that is not completely theirs.

    • Jarrett

      @ slammer,

As with the iPhone/iPod, it isn’t what Apple is or isn’t doing with the hardware. It is what the developers are doing with the tools that Apple gives them in the SDK. Their Apps are what will or won’t lead to iOS devices being successful.
Obviously you see it as Apple needs to find a reason for you to buy their device. Apple sees their job as providing developers with tools to create Apps that will lead you to purchase Apple hardware. Your concern is Apple, Apple’s concern is the developer and the developers concern is you (the customer).
The entry point of your post is quite strange. Why would anyone post their age/sex/job or anything else in a post online where no one would/could (or care to) verify such information? Deflection would be my guess. Use the products you like sir/ma’am and leave it at that.

      • Kara

The exit point of your post is quite strange. Who cares? It’s a ‘comment’ section. He left comments about how he feels of the iPad, positive or negative.

  • Eric

The reason that Apple did not sell 3,000,001 of these devices was because I feel they purposely made a limited device. No camera. No HDMI port. No HD video. No SD card slot. No true USB port. No, no, no. Just a 10″ iPod Touch and I have an iPod Touch already. Making an iPod Touch in a 10″ size is not innovation.

I am waiting until v2. Apple purposely kept features off of this device just to have a,”Look at what it does now!!!” event next year. Next year I will probably stand in line to buy one (or just order it online at Apple.COM). I LOVE Apple, and they obviously have a success with the iPad, but I think they purposely shortchanged people on this device. It is very lacking (IMHO).

    • walter cinnamon buns

That’s were the sheeples come in.

      Baaaaaaaaaaa!

      • Jarrett

        @ walter cinnamon buns,

As I have stated numerous times no matter how you put it there isn’t a company on the planet that doesn’t seek out the exact same loyalty from their customers. What is funny is that it seems Apple is actually growing their loyal customer base.
But hey, keep doing whatever it is that you do. We are all certain that you are somewhat of a success yourself and no doubt a ladies man to boot.

    • Jarrett

I am also waiting for version 2. For a much different reason though. I have no need for the product at this time and can not seem to just go give Apple $500 just because I want a new gadget. Could I make use of this product? Absolutely. Can I get by in the time being without it? Yep.
Your argument is silly really. Apple could have made a product with all of that. They also could have charged $999 for an entry level iPad. WiFi will be the interface for most everything so we will never see USB on the iPad. LitePeak maybe but no USB.
The people who feel short changed about this product are not buying the iPad. The people who are buying it are people who………..wait for it………wait………are finding USES for it in their lives. Consumers purchase things for one reason, to USE.
Finally, it is a 9.7 inch screen. For a person so worried about what Apple left out, you yourself are not very detailed.

      Just sayin’

      • Jim

Consumption is not just about using, it’s about having. We currently live in a have world, and people have to have the latest and greatest. I’d love to see the percentages of buyers who just bought this because it was the cool thing to do/get.

      • Cold Dead Fingers

Can you kindly show me the person who’d spend $500 minimum to buy the latest and greatest? I bought mine because of the ebook functionality, and I know Apple will expand this area to something bigger than it ever would have been just on the kindle. According to Apples numbers, there are 17 applications and 2-3 books per iPad. Now, those were the numbers for 2 million sold, so, who knows what the 3 million mark brings, but, the point being, if people can randomly discover a better purpose for a device, who are you to condemn them for their initial enthusiasm? Last time I checked nobody knew what the iPad can do, but the early adopters (as in the first 300,000) got it and opened up the iPad application count to 10,000 by showing our support.

    • Shumdit

And you get one year closer to death waiting on it, while I am enjoying mine and will likely sell it to replace it with the next gen when it comes out.

  • jv91

3 million people who don’t deserve to procreate is what I read in the headline.

    • Jarrett

      @ jv91,

Factually speaking I would think that no one “deserves” to procreate. Procreation is a birth ability and not a birth right. What tends to happen is that women choose to dump their first choice and pick someone that from a far seems like a better catch. Once realizing that they actually screwed up they spend a life time protecting and justifying what they know was a horrible choice.
In the realm of CE we see this all of the time. User one has a product that is a combination of hardware/software all done beautifully by one company. The customers love it in droves. A few though, see some low hanging (non)fruit and decide to partake. Within weeks they realize the fault of their ways. Tragically though, their pride will not allow them to simply come back to the original product. They spend their days mocking people for sticking with the originator and not joining them in misery with the imitator. Misery loves company, sadly tonight you will not have company and you will not be procreating.

  • Perspective

    @jv91

I haven’t bought an iPad, but from where I sit I’d much rather be someone who doesn’t “deserve” to procreate instead of someone who will never have the opportunity. I’m guessing you’re in the latter group.

  • slammer

    @ Jarret

The reason for my introduction and chose to disclose age, is quite simple. “Most” individuals that read these forums, are considered four things:

    1) Precocious adolescents in their teens.
    2) people in their twenties that like to adopt early hype to form bandwagoning and brag about what they have.
    3) Adults that love technology and follow in the form of reason #2 or
    4) Representatives of carriers that always try to pump up their company and the products they offer.

I do not follow the Status Quo of either of the first 3 reasons and I do not work for any carrier. So I essentially have nothing to lose or gain. I simply go by my life’s experience. So while many that feel obligated to support Apple, actually have great reasons to do so, Most are playing on hype and trend and care nothing about the actual facts of what is making Apple a very rich company.

    • Jarrett

      @ slammer,

I believe that people for the most part just buy products they want to buy. If they find uses for the products they support the manufacturer with another purchase down the line. The reason Apple is getting rich is because people are returning business to a company that they trust will give them a good experience with future products. It really isn’t rocket science.

Now, to point one I would say the clarification of “adolescents in their teens” was not needed. To point two I would suggest that people are not bragging about what they got they are just letting the world know that they are not getting laid tonight. This happens on all sides. Fandroids seem to put a lot more work in on telling people are their new “ROM” or their detachable screen that is more of a feature than a manufacturing flaw.

Also, your uses of “most” and “many” would seem to contradict one another there in your last paragraph. You age would suggest that you went to school at a time when horrid handwriting and incorrect word usage would have gotten you hand smack with a yard (or meter for you no US students) stick. So now you age has become even less believable and proven to be even more senseless to about it.

  • Joe

I love when people say iPad or other products “IN THE WILD” …. I just picture a feral iPad snarling under a couch at Starbuck’s. :)

    • Jarrett

I have been going to the Zoo once a week, sooner or later one of them damn monkeys is going to have one.

  • just

i have an iphone an ipad is the dumbest fucking thing on the planet

    • John

Spoiled emo teens that rant like you should have neither an iPhone or an iPad.

  • just

who gives a shit about how many pieces of shit were sold

  • General Zod

Who cares!!! The sheep just keep filling Steve’s pockets. A girl on the plane had both the iPhone and iPad. She was playing a game on the iPhone and when we reached 10K feet she had the same game on the iPad. Why pay twice for the same games / apps? WTF idiots!!

  • slammer

    @ Jarrett

Why did you feel compelled to correct my grammar? Where does this add to the substance of the topic at hand? Is there nothing else in my post to argue effectively or diplomatically? I’m sorry my grammar does not meet your expectations. I am a technician by trade, not an english major nor do I come to these forums to practice Debate 101. You successfully came off sounding like a fool when impinging on my deficiency in grammar. I felt my opinion was easily understood. The forum was open for topic and I expressed my opinion in a manor I felt described my feelings for a certain company on how they deal with marketing their product. NOT the product itself.

Also, if you are going to correct someone in the fashion that you corrected me, it would be wise to place an “R” after “you” when using “your” in a paragraph. This will placate future repremands. Not only did you miss the “R” once, it appears you missed it three times.

P.S. I am 49. Not quite 50. Another 6 months to go. So you are correct in my age placement.

    JB.

You can find most of them on Ebay.

That’s an unbelievable pace. I wonder if those 3 Million will need an [a href=http://ipadcasesblog.com]iPad case[/a].
