HTC Aria now on sale through AT&T

It might not have the raw power or good looks of the upcoming Samsung Captivate, but the HTC Aria is the best Android smartphone offered by AT&T. On sale as of Sunday, $129.99 Aria offers specs which include a 3.2″ HVGA display, 5 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS, 7.2Mbps HSDPA, 600MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 processor, 512MB ROM / 256MB RAM, and Android 2.1 with Sense UI. We don’t imagine it will be breaking AT&T sales records anytime soon (or ever, for that matter), but at least it’s more of a spirited effort than the BACKFLIP.

    What the… Again the same design…

    I think i am going to Motorola…
    Stop repeating your design HTC…

  • Sonya

    iPhone had the same design and it still sold like hot cakes. Don’t think HTC’s design is hurting him, but the low build quality may be.

    Welcome to the party Ma Bell….

    But the iPhone doesn’t have n^2 models of phones out. HTC seems to be releasing a new phone every month that looks the same. After you’ve seen the Desire, Legend, Incredible, EVO, Aria, even the Hero in under a year, you’d think they’ll have some variety in looks.

      Most of those phones are all going to a different carrier not like they have 5 designs all the same on one carrier..

    Looks like the Droid Incredible’s little brother.

    haha thats the best Android AT&T can offer?

    I guess you have to do whatever you can to make sure iphone is what everyone will choose.

      Why would AT&T want everyone to have and iPhone when they don’t have a good markup on them? This phone will require the same monthly bill setup (voice, data, messaging if you want it) as an iPhone so it’ll make AT&T just as much money monthly, plus, it’ll make them more up-front. Also, one could assume that someone with this phone would use less data than an iPhone user. Assuming that the subscriber will still be over 200 MB, the 2GB plan would be required and would garner AT&T the same amount of money for less data usage.

      All-in-all, I’d say AT&T would be just fine with people buying this over iPhone. The reason that AT&T doesn’t have a decent Android offering is because the manufacturers aren’t motivated to make a good Android phone for them (AT&T) that will have to compete directly with the iPhone and AT&T isn’t begging the manufacturers for one either, like Verizon is.

      I have had people recently tell me that they are sick of hearing from their Verizon reps that this next phone will be “Verizon’s iPhone” or an “iPhone killer”. The Incredible blows this thing out of the water based on just about every spec, but they can sell that on Verizon for $200. You wouldn’t be able to sell it at AT&T for that much because it would have to compete directly with iPhone 4.

        @carmen

        solid point. AT&T has spent too much money garnering to Apple’s needs tat they really can’t afford a big purchase on the Android spectrum. Hence, someone like Matt would think that AT&T is doing everything they can to have everyone use an iPhone.

        @Matt

        it’s not that they want everyone using an iPhone, but i can see why you think that. the iPhone saved AT&T and is undeniably they’re biggest, and best selling product but that doesn’t mean they want everyone using one. I’m sure they are plenty of people out there that can afford one but cost the company more money so in turn AT&T would not want them to have one.

        ok since we are talking about att spending so much money hows this sound.
        this phone is 180 bucks with a 36 act fee at any att cor store. its free on dells site and their waiving the act fee, thats a total of 216 bucks cheaper than at the actualy store. dells commission from one sale must be a little more than the 4 dollars commision the rep makes.

        and if you really stated “att cant afford” you need to check ya math brah.
        80 million customers. some spend 3k a month some spend 50. whats 80millx50?
        now muliply that by 24 months. they also have almost 3million people on uverse thats at least $100 a month. they have more customers on dsl internet that any provider in the world. thats 30 bucks a month. they have landlines that have been in the ground for 100+ years that people pay them rent for each day. they have 2k retail store nationwide that have to sell 500 phones a month. with a 20 dollar feature attach rate. thats a minium plan of 40 dolalrs with a 20 text or data plan. so 60 bucks a month times 500 times 2k. thats each month. so times that by 12 months in a year and add it to the total revenue. roughly 4.34 trillion dollars. we havent even begun. how about the phones. do you honestly think the blackberry bold retailed for 450 for att when they bought 785000 of them? how about the car charger from taiwan that cost 3 cents in parts and 4 cents in labor and 2 dollars to ship it and thats being curtuous. than they sell it for 30 bucks! whats the markup on that. each store has to be at a total of 60 dollars in accessories per phone. so take that 500 phones a month times it by 60 and thats your monthly profit for pos accessories. did you know that att is pushing fiber from their uverse to their towers. thats a bandwidth that could crush anyone, hold capacity of thousands more than it can now. uverse has the potential to push 100mbps but they cap it just like apple does on there gb memory. they hold off on everything and milk every penny they can. did you know att cut their reps commision by half becuase of the economy? but their goals went up and att hit an all time high revenue?

        @yea

        First of all, you can’t really group all of the AT&T landline stuff in with the wireless company. AT&T Mobility is its own company and has to stand on its own two feet.

        Secondly, the point that I was trying to make was that contradictory to what Matt posted above me, AT&T would rather have people buy the Aria over the iPhone because that phone surely has a better markup than the iPhone and the users will likely use less data whilst subscribing to the same data plan as iPhone users, thus taxing the AT&T servers a bit less, which will save them money.

        Finally, to solidify my point using the Dell free promotion as an example. Dell is signing up customers and giving them the phone for free because they are getting a kickback from AT&T, no doubt a bit more than it’s costing them to buy the phones. It’s all automated and over the internet, so it doesn’t cost them much and they make money from the kickback. The point is that because these phones cost AT&T a lot less to buy from HTC, they have more wiggle-room to sell the device and still be profitable.

        I don’t see why anyone would buy this for $30 more than an iPhone 3GS.

        While you’re doing all this math why don’t you take a look at any financial statement and show us this 4.34 trillion dollars you speak of? Take a look at any popular finance website and read the cash flow statements, Income or balance sheets. “you need to check ya math brah.”

        Granted it sucks for you if your a rep, but at least keep the numbers someone what inline. Do oil companies even make a trillion in revenue in a year?? And they sitting on the biggest cash cows there is….jeez

  • Rob90262

    What about the samsung captivate I would rather wait for that phone instead of the Aria.

  • SOUTHERN MISS ELITE

    I’m sorry yall….but AT&T has basically told yall this: You want a great Android phone?

    YOU’RE NOT GETTING IT FROM US!!!!!

    Looks like yall are going to have to just pay the upfront money and buy the phones unlocked. Extra money now of course, but, your contract will be unchanged. I don’t know the bands of the Nexus One, but it seems if it supports ATT 3G, then it is still the best possible phone. If not, I’m sure you can get an European unlocked phone and have a good time at the Android party….

    • Topher86

      From all the first impressions I’ve watched, the Aria is a great Android phone. Or is size and power the only thing that matters? Even if that’s the case, I’ve watched the benchmark tests w/ the Aria running along side the Droid, N.One running Froyo, and the Evo, and to tell you the truth, this lil guy held it’s own, and some tests it even ranked along side the N.One w/ Froyo. So all the bitching I’m hearing is from kids complaining about superficial crap. The only ground they have to stand on is the whole disallowance of 3rd party apps, other than that, the Aria is a great device.

      • dook

        The only thing that worries me about this phone is its longevity. Considering it’s 600mhz cpu, I wonder if it will eventually get froyo, and if it does, I wonder if it will get a “full” version of froyo (with flash and live wallpapers). I’m not so sure the msm7227 is up to the task of acceptably rendering flash videos.

        That said, the only thing I don’t like about the phone in its current state is that they basically took the HTC Legend and took the cool out of it by removing the unibody case and the amoled screen (I’m assuming to make a cheaper device). I don’t care about the unibody case so much, but I was really looking forward to the amoled screen, if only for the fact that it’s so much more power efficient than a regular lcd.

  • Topher86

    I’m waiting to see what happens after the holidays, and then I might get this…might.

    btw, it has 384MB RAM…

  • Joe the Plumber

    i really wanted a Sense powered Android phone with at least a 3.5 inch screen & 1GHz processor but ATT is just taking to long so I might pull the plug and pick up an Aria. The only thing I’m worried about is the smaller screen size :(
    mind you I’m going from an iPhone 3G to Aria..

    • Lia

      How is the Aria, coming from using the iphone just before?
      I’m getting a new phone but am in debate between the iphone 3g or htc aria

  • mosamjc

    In all fairness, this is a great little phone for people who want a small, pocketable phone without sacrificing too many features. It is no evo, but then again it will last all day and fit perfectly in the palm of someone with small hands. All in all, not a bad deal for someone who wants a cute, functional phone without paying the apple tax or the need for battery hungry ‘super phone’

  • JJFNIGHTS80

    First of all the processor on this phone is slow. battery life is even the most bad part of the phone. next the Hardware is ugly. I will not be getting a HTC phone or any other shitty ANDROID phone UNTIL AT&t GETS THEIR THICK HEAD and out of Steve Jobs ass until they deliver me or anyone that hates APPLE to get THE HTC DESIRE or the X10!
