O2 UK to initially sell the iPhone 4 to current customers only

O2 UK announced today that it will only offer the iPhone 4 to current customers when the handset launches on June 24th. The wireless carrier cites extremely limited stock as the basis for this potentially controversial decision. Folks looking to score an iPhone by signing up now with O2 are out of luck as the iPhone will only be offered to wireless, home broadband, and home phone customers who have been with O2 since May 24th, 2010. Current customers will have to travel to a brick and mortar store to snag an iPhone as the incredibly hot handset will not be available online from O2 until the end of July. Once the supply of iPhones is no longer limited, O2 will finally make the handset available to new customers.

Thanks, Andrew!

Wow a phone company actually treating loyal and current subscribers with respect. Have Sprint in US and I was lucky to get my Evo 4g preordered. Sucked to hear that some stores were purposely keeping the few extra phones only for new subscribers. Hopefully like in the UK more than one US carrier will eventually sell the iPhone.

How many times did you have to charge your Evo today?

Wow that’s, if anything, a classy move. In Canada, current customers get treated like garbage and there’s more incentives for new customers.

Wow, I really hope they do this Canada. Highly doubt it though…

I agree, the iphone should be available to more than just 1 or 2 carriers..

What a refreshing change to see a company taking the loyalty of their current customers seriously. As was pointed out above, we get treated like shit in Canada. They know they have you by the nuts for 2 to 3 years and don’t try to show you their appreciation for your business. You would think that after several years with the same company, and even renewing your contract, that they would throw you a bone like free caller ID…

You must not know how the business works. When you sign a two year contract they are giving you a $500-$700 phone for $199 or less. By signing that contract they are discounting the phone in a major way to guarantee your business for the next two years . So you want them to just discount you a new phone every time the latest and greatest comes out. There is one way to do this pay full price for the phone.

I have no idea what you’re trying to say here. I never mentioned anything about the phone prices, I wrote about keeping your customers loyal, like O2 is doing. Obviously they won’t give you a new phone for free on command, even though they are not worth the prices the carries charge. Example…A prepaid phone usually costs 70% less to purchase than the same phone costs to purchase without a contract.

In related news, I find that image they chose questionable. While they were probably trying to show diversity, what it’s saying to me is:

“Have a tech question? Ask an asian!”

Or it could just be that she’s good looking.

Yes, Guru Sara, how much for a BJ?

Looks like the 4g is becoming an exclusive phone only available to a few at first…

  • SOUTHERN MISS ELITE

Since the obvious customer loyalty is well covered in here…

How freaky do yall think she is in real life? I think she gets down.

  • HiHo

yes Guru Sara…who will win the Lakers/Celtics game 7?? oh wait….

you obviously dont know how the business works. JMR said it correctly because a prepaid phone will cost $79, the EXACT phone on a plan costs $199 w/out a contract.
