Hotmail rolling out ActiveSync functionality early?

Software

Windows Wave

Hotmail, Microsoft’s free email platform, has been getting a horde of new features lately; not to mention a new slogan, “the new busy.” Blog liveside.net is reporting that the ability to access your Hotmail data via ActiveSync, a feature that was scheduled for release later this summer, is now working for some users. That’s right, you can get your mobile device of choice — assuming is supports ActiveSync — to synchronize your Hotmail: email, contacts, and calendar items, with push. If you’re a Hotmail user and give this a try, do let us know how it turns out for you.

    people actually still use Hotmail?

    • tk-093

Pretty sure it is still more popular then gmail.

I’m not a fan of the @hotmail.com address, but your other choice is @live.com, which is what I use.

@Jon, well you know what’s even worse, some people actually still use Gmail !!!

    • bocale

@max, and what do you use? Gmail rocks for me.

  • b00dah

Yeah, I still use it as one of my “all purpose” email accounts that I don’t mind getting spam. They’re good as far as I’m concerned.

So if you don’t use hotmail…what is everyone’s email of choice? I have hotmail among others for specific purposes…Just curious to see what everyone else is using…..

Don’t listen to the people here preferring gmail or yahoo and dissing hotmail. Use what you like. I don’t know why gmail people think they are unique or special. Just different colour sheep really.

I use gmail, an account from my ISP, and my work email. I use each differently.

BTW — I get more spam on my work email address than my gmail account.

Don’t understand the obsession with all things google. Their email is terrible.

Not sure what you don’t like about Gmail. it has it’s own quirks but it’s the best one I’ve used so far, and I have a gmail account, hotmail, yahoo, and a few others along the way that I can’t even remember. To me Gmail seems to be one of the most seamless and typically the fastest. My hotmail account dates back to before they were owned by Microsoft. I’ll admit I haven’t logged into it in a year (no one I know has it anymore) but last I used it hotmail was a very slow cludgy interface. Maybe they have improved it, I’m going to log in and find out.

I hope BB starts supporting 2-way sync with Hotmail soon… Starting to get fed up with gmail and google.

    • Apocalypse

I use google sync with my BB and it works ok. I too am extracting myself from google products.

  • MrRisto

Tried this on my Palm Pre and it didn’t work.

    • Darnell

Because you need a Windows Mobile device, try the Palm Treo Pro instead ;) .

      • NotYet

        @Darnell

That is not true. First, you need an Exchange ActiveSync-capable smartphone. It does not have to be Windows Mobile. There are already reports that EAS activated hotmail accounts have been successfully setup on EAS capable Android phones, iPhones, and EAS capable Nokia phones. A phone that is EAS capable may be able to use EAS activated hotmail accounts, that is, if they have already been activated. But Microsoft has already made clear that EAS is slowwwwwwwwwly being activated and in a very limited fashion, so some accounts may work via EAS, but most will not right now, regardless of if you are using Windows Mobile or not. Microsoft has announced already that it has not fully switched on EAS for all hotmail accounts yet. It’s rolling it out by “cluster,” not en masse.

To me Yahoo is still the best followed by Hotmail. GMail just sucks, maybe because they’re still in Beta and it’s invite only.

    GMail Pros:
    1. SSL encryption
    2. Free IMAP & ActiveSync
    3. Plenty of customization with Google Labs

    GMail Cons:
    1. Poor user interface. It’s like MS Outlook vs. Lotus Notes where Notes is so behind and that’s where GMail is at.
    2. Unable to unthread the emails
    3. No multi-tasking – No tabs to switch back and forth between emails. Only one at a time.
    4. No folder options
    5. No drag and drop
    6. Only ~7GB limited space. I’ve needed multiple Gmail accounts because I ran out of space and didn’t want to delete old ones.
    7. The list of deficiencies goes on and on compared to Yahoo and Hotmail.

To each, his own. Folks use their accounts in different ways. I’ve had my hotmail account since before MS owned it, I still use it to this day, but it is plagued with SPAM, so it’s basic use is just when I need to sign up for something. I’ve had a Yahoo account for just as long as the hotmail, and although it’s interface has improved, I still prefer GMAIL over all.

i was an early gmail user but it seems riff with spam and I am not crazy with the labels function. just started using hotmail via the live domain and it is great. all of my non signup related email goes there.

  • Apocalypse

got my firstname@hotmail.ca so i’m sitting pretty

I have my own domain and gmail as well

  • jazzyl

I do have a hotmail email account it was actually the first email that I ever had. But for now I’m using mostly my 2 gmail accounts and I love them especially with google sync and the gmail app on my BlackBerry makes getting everything that I want much easy for me. I still use my hotmail email not as much as I use my gmail. Well depending on what you prefare for me gmail is far much better than hotmail period.

Yes, people do still use hotmail. I’ve had my account for over 10 years and have absolutely no desire to obtain a new email address/contacts/calendar. I’d like my blackberry to be able to sync directly with my hotmail calendar with no hassles, work arounds, etc.
