Sony Ericsson announces the Xperia X8

Feeling the Xperia X3 too small and the Xperia X10 too large, yesterday Sony Ericsson announced what we like to think of as the Goldilocks handset in the Xperia X8. Better known as the Shakira, the X8 comes with a 3″ HVGA display, 3.2 megapixel camera, A-GPS, Wi-Fi, 128MB of internal memory, 600MHz processor, and Android 1.6 with UX UI. We can’t say for sure if the Xperia X8 will arrive on U.S. soil, but the fact that there is a quad-band version with the 850 and 1900MHz bands of UMTS/HSDPA means it’s a definite possibility.

Boring… hasn’t SE gone out of business yet? Do us all a favor and hurry up with that…

All these phones have 1.6 on them. 2.1 is the new standard and 2.0 was on the Droid. That’s over a year old at this point. 2.2 (Froyo) is about to drop.

They haven’t even put the X10 up for sale in the US yet. And even that doesn’t have a 2.0 or 2.1 upgrade in sight prior to release. They are a total fail. Let me know when they give up on making phones.

Too bad for SE. I remember when they were churning out some great handsets.

I want Emma Anders on my contact list

Why in the world are they using 1.6? That screws up the platform by fragmenting it. I don’t understand why they lag so much. Too bad goggle has no say in this because this gravely affects the platform.

Android 1.6? Seriously? The one thing is that they make other manufacturers with custom UI’s look good for actually running them with newer Android versions on a relatively timely basis.

Dear God this sounds awful, why even waste money to produce this bottom of the line and outdated phone?

Either speed up up your development cycle SE, or go back to feature phones…

This is a sad showing from your company in reality.

Actually, this has always been SE. Slow on support and slow upgrades with a newer OS. People might hate Apple for their lockdown but, how can you even begin to like this or be an SE fan. This is ridiculous.

I wanted the X10 also. It’s crazy that their announcing this phone but, they haven’t even released an unlocked version or carrier version of the X10 in the US yet!

I am also anxiously awaiting the X10. BTW – You CAN purchase an unlocked version of the X10 from SE UK site for ~$720. It has all the necessary bands to work with T-Mobile and AT&T in the US. The only down side I can see is that the integrated music store is not supported in the US and you have to deal with words like “colour” and “labour”.
