AT&T announces the Samsung Captivate, aka Galaxy S

Everyone can now stop saying that AT&T isn’t trying when it comes to Android, as today the carrier announced it will be carrying the Samsung Captivate, which is essentially the Galaxy S. Powered by a 1GHz Hummingbird processor and running Android 2.1, the Captivate features a 4″ WVGA Super AMOLED display, 5 megapixel camera with 720p video recording, 16GB of internal memory and a 7.2Mbps HSDPA radio. Need a release date? Well too bad, because all AT&T will say is that the Captivate is “scheduled for release in the coming months.” Such a shame.

    I just “chatted” with an AT&T sales person who said there’s no release date yet. But he said AT&T typically releases new phones toward the end of the month. I’d love to see this in the stores this month.

    Well I hope it’s July 15th, because I can wait that long. If its really ‘in the coming months’ then I’m jumping ship and going to Verizon. AT&T better get in the game, not everybody is a fan of the iPhone.

      I agree with Mark. AT&T better get in the game quickly for they will be stuck in the iPhone world and lead them to nowhere. I have been with AT&T for quite some time now and tired of playing catch up.

    Does anyone know if this phone has any crappy “overlay” that would prevent it from getting an update?

    I want an android phone with JUST ANDROID so I don’t have to wait for some manufacturer to decide if they want to bother fixing their overlay so I can have an update.
    I know, good nexus is like this, but I don’t want to pay 500$ for a phone.

    I wish Android would hurry up with the “pretty” update that will discourage all these makers from having to put these overlays on the phone to make it less boring.

    AT&T was putting out crappy-stripped down Android phones [with Yahoo??] to push the techie folks towards iphone 4, but iphone 4 has it’s own problems with reception… NOW we see full feature Android phones hitting the market… go figure.

    just got back from the AT&T store and had a chance to get hands on with the new Captivate and is a awesome phone … they will be released Sunday July 18th but the guy said some stores might not get them til Monday July 19th
