HTC announced earlier today the Android-powered Desire was slated to land with select regional carriers in the U.S., but the smartphone giant did not name names. Rather than keep the nation in suspense, Cellular South has come forward as the first regional carrier to announce publicly that it will carry the HTC Desire. With coverage primarily in the Southeastern U.S., Cellular South is the largest privately held wireless carrier in the U.S. and one of the first regional carriers to embrace the Android platform when it offered the HTC Hero last fall. The Desire will join the Hero and the upcoming Motorola Milestone in Cellular South’s growing smartphone lineup. Exact launch date and pricing for the Desire was not disclosed but you can count on it to arrive later this summer. Check out the full press release after the jump.

RIDGELAND, Miss.–(BUSINESS WIRE) – Cellular South, the nation’s largest privately held wireless communications provider, announced plans today to offer the HTC Desire™, one of the most advanced Android™-powered touchscreen smartphones in the world. The HTC Desire is one of several new Android-based smartphones the carrier plans to launch this year.

Featuring a superfast, 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor that encourages easy and seamless multi-tasking, the latest Android™ 2.1 platform and access to more than 70,000 applications on Android Market™, the Desire features the latest HTC Sense™ experience.

The device, which the company expects to bring to market this summer, will feature built-in Google mobile services, including Google Search™, Google Maps™, Gmail™, YouTube™ and Google Maps Navigation™ BETA with voice-aided, turn-by-turn directions. More details will be available soon on other features of the popular smartphone.

“We’re excited about adding the HTC Desire to our expanding line-up of Android-powered advanced touchscreen smartphones,” said Kevin Hankins, chief operating officer of Cellular South. “This device takes Android to a whole new level with HTC Sense and a platform that optimizes the rich media experience for news, the mobile web, music and video applications.”

Following on the heels of Cellular South’s record-breaking introduction of its first Android-powered touchscreen smartphone and its recent announcement of plans to offer the Motorola Milestone this summer, the company is poised to become one of the leading providers of Android-powered smartphone devices to consumers and businesses. Cellular South was one of the first U.S. carriers last November to introduce an Android™-powered smartphone with its launch of the HTC Hero™.

I think this is the first time I’ve ever heard of Cellular South. Its like when someone mentions something about Alltel and people think “Alltel’s still around?”

  • Karen

OMG, the desire is friggin awesome!! :o )

I can’t figure out why you got down ranked for that.

I agree, its a must have bonus phone for me when it hits Telus in Canada.

  • http://www.verizonwireless.com VZW

sorry cell south but verizon beats you in 3G coverage in MS now.

    • Jody

Not hardly. I’m a Cellular South customer and have been corner to corner, side to side, top to bottom in Mississippi and have no issues with CSouth’s 3G.. not to mention it’s a lot cheaper. CSouth unlimited EVERYTHING = $80.00 a month. Verizon unlimited everything = $120 a month. I’ll stick with CSouth.

I have family in North MS and Verizon covers North MS the best, even more with 3G. I have family with them and they have a lot of data problems. Verizon use to roam on them before Alltel and Unicel and 3G in Tupelo was very slow for Rev A.

hasnt U.S. cellular already stated they will carry the desire too? they said it on ther facebook does that count as a public statment they even said it would be ready in august or they saying it is the first carrier to have the desire before U.S. cellular?

    • Al Chablis

Yes, they did, but BGR has some form of U.S. Cellular blindness. USCC will have it first, and announced it first too. Whatever.

      • Corey

        Amen! Good call!

  • sean76

Lol….amazing that at&t is so far behind in the hot android race…

  • Jody

Awesome news. CSouth is known for always getting the “latest and greatest” phones about a year after everyone else has had them. And this will be hitting CSouth just in time for me to renew my contract.

  • ViniD

Hopefully this will make this phone a lil cheaper on ebay and it will work ATT, so maybe i can have the Desire

    • DnnyBoy

Hardly will, the CSouth Runs on CDMA EVo(3g) …..u might be able to use it on Sprint or Verizon …..For AT&T you will the European/Asian version(GSM) which isn’t Compatible with AT&T’s 3g, just Edge!!!!!!

      Big Fail!

      • ViniD

Yea that really sux i was thinkin CellularOne they run on GSM.

      • Flixoman

What about getting one from Canukistan? Telus uses GSM right?

Where is Cellular South? Never heard of them. Probably losers

    • http://www.verizonwireless.com VZW

Mississippi, Memphis, and Gulf Coast of AL.

    • blah

well i dont think a loser company would have the Desire… before any of the major US carriers!

  • Herewegoagain

Blah. I hate Cell South. I have 2 days until my contract is up and I am headed straight to the Verizon store. I have had to many problems with them the past two years. I was AT&T before.

  • james

i have never heard of cell south is there a store in texas

  • JJFNIGHTS80

Fuck the Desire. I don’t care anymore AT&T won’t be picking this one up.

  • SOUTHERN MISS ELITE

    I live in MS (obviously).

For those who don’t live in the southeast, or don’t care about any company outside the big 4 (sprint, vz, att, tmb), I’ll quickly educate you on cell south

Cell south is a cell phone company that prides itself on focusing exclusively on the south. Too many companies refused to service the south for many years for whatever reasons. This helped cell south gain over a million customers – even with the crappiest phones possible!

Communities adore cell south. From the backwoods ones to the 25k towns.

When Katrina happened, guess what towers stayed up??? CELL SOUTH! Verizon used to roam off their towers for a while before putting up their own frequencies. I used someone’s phone to call home that day.

I’ve never had cell south personally due to living in a town with 3g signals for att/verizon. BUT, I always respect cell south.

And oh yea, their unlimited plan = BANANAS. Look it up! It puts Sprint’s and TMB’s to shame!

Here’s the downfall of cell south though:

    1) Phone selection
    2) Phone replacement (I’ve known people who had to pay a grip to replace a broken phone because cell south only allows phones stored in their database
    3) Refusal to accept “outside” CDMA phones. Tried to sell someone a CDMA phone…cell south wouldn’t activate it. That’s how it is…

Basically though, don’t discount this company. Its rare that someone down here complains about their service (signal or customer) and that’s like that for a reason. Some of yall who whine about the big boys would feel like you’re in heaven speaking to cell south reps. They’re trained to help you first before pointing out your faults. Like a rep should be trained to do!

    • Corey

Good post Miss Elite! This is just like US Cellular. I have a lot better service with them than the big 4. It’s sad sites like these discount the smaller carriers or don’t report enough about them so that other people out there have more of an open mind!

  • http://www.labimmerinsider.com/ Jessica

Sound good to me, I hope it will work great.

  • Corey

Um…this was announced FIRST by US Cellular a few months back.

  • christie

oh how i do love cellular south, they have been good to me. My contract was up two months ago, with all the new phones out there, I wanted one of the smart phones, but don’t like settling for less crappy one. I applied for a new droid just last night and Verizon sent me a email saying they would need a $400 deposit for service on the 19.99 phone with two year contract. so i declined the offer and was researching other networks when i found this about the htc desire. who says you cant have the best of both worlds. low phone service that I like and does screw me over with over kill charges and a great phone. I will stay with cellular south and wait for the new phone so I can renew. Cell south do us right on the new phone price now, and you just may have life long customers. AT&T, verizon you suck, you just have a good phone.

  • Steven

I miss Cellular South, I had unlimited minutes, text, and smartphone data for $40 (first plan is $80, 2nd line is $40). There is not a network with better coverage in Mississippi, For Ole Miss home games AT&T brings in a portable cell tower and still has signal problems and Cell South users never notice a difference.

Unfortunately the lack of phones finally did me in, I had the HTC Hero and hated it so I moved to AT&T for an iPhone. I miss the service, price, and the fact that they’re a local company but I’m not giving up my iPhone.
