Services

BlackBerry AppWorld

According to PhoneScoop, RIM is set to announce an update to their mobile marketplace application App World; cleverly named App World 2.0. The newest App World brings with it several new features which include: carrier billing, improved search, a more detailed “My World” section, QR code support, and other minor interface improvements. PS also reports the imminent launch of BlackBerry ID. BlackBerry ID is designed to, “help users manage their accounts more easily and transfer between devices and carriers if need be.” We have yet to see an official press release from the folks in Waterloo. What do you think?

    • Hobbes

you mean this piece of news or the actual BBAW 2.0? if so, where can I get it?

    • good laugh

With the name “App World 2.0″, I have inadvertently think of Justin Bieber’s CD “My World 2.0″

    • Old News

      I meant the news!

  • JoeBold

great. blackberry ID is great idea. anybody w a BB knows what a hassle it is to transfer, switch between devices. its should be easy like changing underwear! it is our eternal right!

  • iName

i wanted to switch to blackberry but the apps are pretty mediocre/overpriced. hopefully this will improve with time.

  • Percy

Too little too late, for me at least.

    • E-MAN

What did you expect the app store to do? It’s is just an outlet to get apps. One of the biggest criticisms was the payment method, paypal, and with this expected updated we won’t need paypal as it we would get billed on carrier invoice.

      • Moonbaseone

        How about more/better Apps?

      • E-MAN

Not sure if more is needed, but better is always good. I think the hardware is much of the limiting factor, but I have a feeling things are going to change in the next 18 months….

    Andrew,

Good article, but counted at least 3 spelling/punctuation issues. Could use a quick proofread when you get the chance. Much obliged.

  • Albert Pujols

I deleted app world off my bb…It’s slow, plus the apps suck… At one point the top app was an app that simulated a freaking battery pull…

    • George

The sad reality of the BlackBerry…

    • Wow

      Lol

I did the same removed App World from my storm and my phone is wayy better now.

Yup no more app. And I guess App World 2.0 is going to be the #1 app in the store for a while.

  • TONY

Lol battery pulls. BB sucks. It’s a brick for poor people.

  • Max

App World 2.0 for 50 apps? Brickbreaker Elite! Awesome!

    • E-MAN

Looks like you just want to play games on your phone. Anyway, don’t be ignorant, the problem is not with App World, but the little amount of memory on these phones (in my case 128MB).

  • Dan

BB app world is a complete joke, in every sense of the word. From the overpricing, to install times, to general lacksluster apps. I’ve been an avid bb user in addition to the iphone, and some android. However the time has come to kiss my bb goodbye. It is been left in the dust. i don’t know if they’ll every catch up,,,

  • Tony

What’s with the sarcasm about them naming it “App World 2.0″? The iPhone just keeps adding numbers also…

You guys seriously need to take the bias out of your “reporting”.

    • Mike Hawk

Umm, BlackBerry is so far behind the times it’s sad. The only thing keeping them relevant is that they’re hooked into the Enterprise like leeches. As far as phones and apps go, they’re about as pathetic as it gets. I haven’t met a BlackBerry user that doesn’t make excuses daily for why they’re using it. Usually because it’s the only phone they can use with corp. email.

  • George

Should have been released in the original App World. What the hell took them so long?

  • George

Note: I’m about to somewhat contradict my above statement.

I will say, however, that a BlackBerry was not designed for apps. It does not need them. People want BlackBerries for seamless messaging and communication. Of course it doesn’t hurt to expand their reach on the market with an application marketplace, but it would be foolish to expect it to be their top priority.

    • Dan

while i agree it is primarily a messaging device, times are changing. While those features are extremlely important including their stellar enterprise email integration, there’s no reason as to why they can’t adapt as everyone else is seeming to. As a media device, it remains an utter joke. Doesn’t have to be their “main focus” but it should be way more usable, and functional. Hate to give up bbm, but no choice…

      • George

Remember, this is a business. RIM does not have the same ‘dominate and innovate’ mentality that Apple does. They don’t care about trends, unless it will bring in more money. At this point, they pretty much made App World out of necessity. Their hand was forced, showing they really don’t have the intention to expand beyond their current market. Bottom line is they don’t need to expand. Development costs money. Why should they spend that money when they can earn practically just as much without it? Doesn’t make sense for them.

With that said, the ball is the consumer’s court. RIM’s market share has been constantly growing, therefore proving my point that innovating is not necessary for them.

      • Ms. Cleo

        Oh? Growing….

        http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/05/iphone-vs-android-report-finds-apple-has-three-times-googles/

I’m leaving BB as soon as I can for Android. I’m pissed off and tired at my Tour. Sure, it works…but it doesn’t shake a stick at anything.

      • Mike Hawk

Yeah, same here. The only thing keeping RIM in the game is their lock-in with the corporate mail systems. I currently use a BB bold, and now that our corp. mail system will support OTB (other than blackberry), I’ll be jumping off the Lame-Ship BB-Pop first chance I get.

Slow shitty apps and like a 3 year release cycle for a point release, sorry, they need to take some of that corporate gold they’re hauling in and pay a bigger staff of developers to get shit done faster.

Not sure if I’ll go for Android or iPhone, but one thing is for sure, I’ll be dropping my blackberry on ebay soon enough.

People saying it’s just a messaging device are copping out because the device is a loss for other types.

I find myself thinking of RIM and my BlackBerry like McDonalds…WhyTF do people continue to buy this stupid tasteless shit when they can have a real burger practically EVERYWHERE else. I think I even prefer my E61 to the Bold…

  • rederikus

I love BlackBerrys. I have several – really.

AppWorld is a total mess. It just does not work.

It lost all my paid for app and then it refused to use my perfectly good PayPal account.

I have deleted it and now use the Crackberry (Mobihand) store. That works.

  • Hmmm

Err….did RIM stop to think about how service providers can bill apps on their billing platforms? It appears not.

  • http://www.bgr.com Paul

Blackberry is way behind, and some people have already moved on. Oh well :(

    http://vimeo.com/11799469

    • Mike Hawk

I’ll be joining that “moved on” crowd shortly when my contract is up…

  • Sam

Quick question: Do all BB users have mullets?

    • E-MAN

Nope, conservative haircuts. They dress in suits and drive BMW’s.

  • will

too little too late + the more apps i download on my blackberry the slower it goes so it doesn’t even matter anymore.

    • Mike Hawk

Here Here… I’m not an Apple guy, but I’m suffering with this lame-ass BlackBerry while my wife enjoys all sorts of great apps and Exchange-fed corp email…

Soon my BlackBerry induced haze will be over and I’ll be left thinking “WTF was I thinking buying this slow moving constipated piece of shit!?”

  • Brian

I love my BB9700, I like the idea of the new BB9800 with touchscreen and slider. But they need to come out with a horizontal sliding keyboard with touch, then overhaul the OS. I’m really liking the Motorola Droids, more fun, free apps and phone and OS do much more. If BB doesnt get their act together Droid will definatly takeover and BB will be the old dinosaur.

  • http://www.rossmanngroup.com Louis Rossmann

    Who uses BB app world?

Can you even find a decent SSH app on it for under $10? Or IRC app for under $5?

  • http://www.blackberrysoftware.co.cc blackberrysoftware

Yes, the more i download the more slower perf i get..

  • mi_canuck

Blackberry ID would be VERY helpful… save from having to re-accept and re-enter keys every time we upgrade the OS on our BBs…
