Apple nets 600,000 iPhone 4 pre-orders in one day

Apple has just announced that they netted 600,000 iPhone 4 pre-orders in one day. The pre-order bonanza was enough to bring down both Apple’s and AT&T’s ordering systems for several hours yesterday…and today. Six hundred thousand. Yikes. We’ve got the press release for you after the jump.

CUPERTINO, Calif., June 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Yesterday Apple and its carrier partners took pre-orders for more than 600,000 of Apple’s new iPhone 4. It was the largest number of pre-orders Apple has ever taken in a single day and was far higher than we anticipated, resulting in many order and approval system malfunctions. Many customers were turned away or abandoned the process in frustration. We apologize to everyone who encountered difficulties, and hope that they will try again or visit an Apple or carrier store once the iPhone 4 is in stock.

    I love how silly people are.. the iphone is one phone its the only option u have. Android has sold over 11.8 million devices. I have a physics degree , but its possible my math could be wrong, but thats a few more than 600,000 I switched from my Iphone 3g to Android and never looked back. i love the open source because i can develop roms also. If ur a simplistic person, not to tech savvy than the Iphone is perfect for u. but side by side comparison on specs. Android devices would rape the Iphone 4 until it dies and then mouth F**k its corpse.

      Gary, the fact that you are comparing the TOTAL amount of Android devices sold to 1 DAY of pre-orders is pretty ridiculous.

      I’m a proud Pre owner but it’s hard to deny that 600,000 pre-orders in one day is incredibly impressive.

      Lets be for real on your numbers, I can count at least a dozen people I know that are gadget freaks and carry three different phones at all times. Constantly upgrading when the latest and greatest are available. If you really think that your 11.8 million devices were all sold to new subscribers and/or different people your an idiot and you need to take the mouth F**king.
      And the statement referencing “All you have”……. Everyone of the 600,000 people who bought an iPhone in that (1) ONE DAY had the option of choosing any phone.

        i know dozens of people with physics degrees and none of the speak like you. the fact that you may or may not develop roms (and by develop roms, I think you meant you play rom video games on your phone) is overcome by how ignorant you sound when you swear. if you were a physics graduate you would realize that you are comparing one day sales with total sales so lets put it in perspective because you are obviously the world’s greatest mathematician:

        if your number of 11.8 million is correct that doesn’t even stack up to apple.

        Apple’s total iphone sales to date is 51.2 Million according to a referenced wiki page. I’m not a licensed mathematician but I can certainly do that math, that’s a 433.9% increase over android. dick!

        First of all “Dickhead” no where in that statement was there any reference to the 600k being all new subscribers, again your reading skills indicate a third grade education.
        Second, Im very content with my 3GS and have no intention on buying the new model. In fifteen years, three phones. Verizon for the first five, Nextel for the last nine and a 3GS the last six months.
        As far as being able to afford it, thats not a problem, I could probably outfit the last three generation of your family and foot the monthly bill.
        My 3GS is my first iPhone that will get the 4.0 software and I wont be upgrading until the phone dies.

        Not sure what you’re doing with your phones, or where you’re stuffing them, but in the 20 years I’ve been buying cell phones, I have yet to need to replace the battery.

        Removable batteries are for phones like my shitty BB Bold that require you to do a battery pull to do a reboot.

        My wife’s iPhone has yet to freeze, spontaneously reboot, or require any attention other than regular heavy mail and BeeJive IM usage.

        You ought to stop leaving your phones on vibrate in your panties, that’s a quick way to kill your battery for sure.

      Market saturation is not determined yet. Better to make what you need with extra then to over produce and not sell.
      The more the item is in demand the stronger the pricing can be as well.

        I agree but apple should have known that with the hype behind the iphone 4 they were easily going to sell at least a million. As Erich said the 3GS sold 1 million and its not even half the phone that the iPhone 4 is. They made a boo boo there. Just my $0.02.

    Gary: You really can’t compare the sales numbers since there have been far more iPhone sales than Android and the main reason Android even started to catch up is the ‘buy one get one’ deals that carriers were running.

    I think the Android offerings are amazing, but after using a DROID I would not get one. It might have some features that are better than the iPhone, but it does not use/integrate them as well as iPhone does for a total experience.

      I respect ur opinion..but have u ever used an incredible or an EVo? again, im not even a fan boy, I have them both..for what i need, Android is better. I recommend getting a high android device and use it for a week..take it back when ur finish…but really compare

        I’ve got an Incredible and an Iphone. Honestly, yes the android open OS is nice, but with a little common sense and a computer you can hack your iphone and do everything you can do on an android, and vise versa. Both phones are awesome, both phones have their downs, some worse than the other. As far as sales numbers……. Android has almost every carrier, multiple different manufactures, and many different models. Apple has ONE phone and one only on select carriers. To move 600k of one phone in one day is pretty much unheard of. I think apple will move at least 2-3 million more phones in the first month alone. So android has a lot of ground to cover.

      If Apple was on more carriers I doubt Android would have the huge success that they are enjoying. I bought 5 smartphones for my family at Christmas and really couldn’t consider the IPhone since AT&T was the only carrier. That being said I don’t regret the decision to go with Android one bit.

    Not sure who wants to use a fragmented OS with ok apps, inconsistent performance from one device to another, even when they are running the same OS. Or inconsistent updates for each device. Made by HTC where hardware problems live and Motorola can do nothing but design a brick. Android is ok but it’s a OS that was put together because the iPhone. Remember that. So they mask the deficiencies with beefed up hardware spec but at the end of the day, the EVO is still a hero with a bigger screen and slight faster. Reminds me of a windows computer. Yes, you get a lot and can do pretty much anything you want on it, but doesn’t mean it’s that great.

      Even if the iPhone was less spec’d in the hardware realm, you can’t argue with how well they’re hitting 90% of the user’s needs. That’s why the sales numbers are what they are…impressive.

    600,000 is overall. Other countries, other carriers included. It’s not all with AT&T. APPLE netted 600,000 preorders. It said “Apple and its carrier partners”. Last I checked, there was only one carrier partner here in the US. Other countries could preorder starting yesterday too. For the first day though, when there’s still 8 days to launch, that’s pretty impressive, nonetheless.

      Yes it is impressive. Right on par with what smartphones worldwide are doing. Smartphones are gaining the market share around the world. They should be around 11 million for the quarter as others. Good manufacturers sell their smartphones, no matter what the economy.

    You are actually wrong my friend. if you do your research, You’ll find that Google had Android in the works since 2005. Google acquired a company called Android Inc. started by Andy Rubin, who also co-founded Danger (Makers of the software found on sidekicks). Just as long as Apple decided to enter the mobile market, So did Google.

    AT&T sold out of iPhones in a half of day. And that was only per order. 600,000 phones sold. Now just imagine on the release date. If AT&T keep showing numbers like this Verizon will never get an iPhone. When it’s all said and done AT&T will take back there throne and be the largest wireless company again. Verizon has 6 droid phones to 1 of AT&T. Pitiful

    People your comparing apples FOURTH EVER phone that only works on ONE server to droid who make several phones a year since they have sprint verizon and others the only reason why droid phones a currently better then iphones is b/c droid ONLY works on phones while apple works on music players computer notebooks and accessories for all of those trust me once day comes when apple has more servers droid will be screwed up the ass
