T-Mobile has officially confirmed that they will be offering free phones, to all those who sign up for a family plan, on June 19th. The AP reports: “Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m., new customers will be able to get free handsets of their choice by signing up for a “family plan,” [...] Current T-Mobile customers can convert a single-user plan into a family plan by adding at least one user, or adding lines to a family plan they already have. You can get up to five free phones with a single family plan, though each will come with a two-year contract.” The deal includes all higher-end phones, including the BlackBerry Bold 9700, HTC myTouch 3G Slide, and the new Android Garmifone; all usually retail for around $200 with a 2-year contract. T-Mobile did mention that some phones will require a mail-in-rebate in order to be free. Still, not a bad deal. Anyone going to take T-Mo up on their free offering?

    Sign me up!!!

Gotta love the rebate! Pay up front for the phones then mail in and get the rebate. Yeah, and make sure you make a copy of everything required to send in to Young America because if they lose it then you’re out the money. Oh, and if they do get it then you could possibly wait about 60 days+ to get it. By that time you’ve paid your credit card of the phones anyway. They are counting on you not sending in the rebate and/or not making a copy of the receipt and bar code……Anyways, existing customers, upgrades aren’t included.

@Hmmm: Don’t know why you’re getting downvotes for that. Pretty much accurate, helpful info — especially the part about making copies of the receipts.

This is actually worth it…. T-Mobile’s non-contract family plan was a better deal than the contract pricing plans by far (unlimited everything was $140/mo for 2 phones non-contract vs. $180/mo for contract buyers). Think about it $40/mo extra times 24 months = $960. This levels to playing field if the phones are now free since the off contract phones are about $450/ea. So if you get more than 2 phones its worth the savings.

I dunno.. they get any -good- Android phones since the G1 nearly 2 years? No?

    Sorry, Pinkie.

      You forget about the N1?????

  • nowadroidfan

What about the hd2. I hope that’s included

If they had the N1 in the store, i’d definitely consider it.

I wish the whole phone-subsidy game would die already.

    • Joseph Singer

The phone subsidy plan lives because people want a phone for cheap or nothing. When that goes away perhaps it will happen. T-Mobile already is trying to make people do that with plans that are cheaper if you don’t get them with a phone. Even those plans where you buy the phone for MSRP you can pay the cost broken down into monthly payments.

Although I’m disappointed that even though I have two individual plans that are both out of contract and have been eligible for an upgrade for some time now, I cannot upgrade both phones.
However, the cost savings here is worth cancelling both lines and getting two new lines. Plus having a ‘permanent’ number, thanks Google, helps.

    In response to nowadroidfan:
Yes the HD2 is available. I plan on picking up that and TMO’s ’3GS’ (bka myTouch 3G Slide).
