Samsung Galaxy S passes through the FCC with T-Mobile friendly 3G

General

The rumors of a T-Mobile branded Samsung Galaxy S received a healthy dose of credibility today. Spotted on its way out of the FCC was the aforementioned SGH-T959 with 850/1900 GSM/GPRS/EDGE and T-Mobile friendly AWS/1900 WCDMA/HSPA on board. With FCC approval out of the way, the flagship Android handset for both Samsung and T-Mobile is looking ripe and ready for launch this coming July. Though we have to wonder, with the EVO 4G out and about, and rumors of the DROID X coming fast and furious, is anyone still interested?

A lot of people are still interested. Tmobile has needed a phone like this and thousands of Tmobile users have been praying for something decent. Looks like they’ll finally get something.

I just hope they can root it or else they’ll be stuck on Android 2.1 for the rest of their contract.

    • umaluver

This would only be legendary if it were the PRO model with keyboard.

      This is already inferior.

    • T-Mobile_EXPERT

Of course I’m interested, WHY GET AN EVO WITH A SCREEN TAHST GONNA FALL OFF OR A FAULTY WI-FI CONNECTION?? haha i rather get this weLl built samsung device RUNNING ON A SNAPDRAGON WITH A WHOLE BUNCH OF GOODIES.

COME ON BGR, STOP IT ALREADY, ALWAYS PUTTING T-MO DOWN. FUCK BGR.

      • StevenGlansburg

Well, T-mobile does suck. I am with them now. Before I was aware of/needed reliable 3G everywhere they were fine, but they don’t do it for me anymore. All the customer service in the world doesn’t change the fact their phones suck and so does their Boost Mobile quality network.

      • Steve Jobs

#1) I have an evo with no issues whatsoever.
#2) “Well built samsung” is an oxymoron
        #3) It doesn’t use a snapdragon
#4) Learn to use the shift key, you type like a retard.
#5) If you don’t like BGR, why read it? Go to TmoNews instead. They have no problem sucking the tmo dick.

      • KyleB

username Steve Jobs defending an HTC Google Android device…anyone else smell the irony?

      • Dave

Just FYI, this phone doesn’t actually have the snapdragon processor instead it carries the same samsung processor that the new Iphone 4 has.

      • Mike

CPU is not snapdragon it is a Samsung Hummingbird, based on the 45nm ARM Cortex A8 snapdragon is 65nm so lets power here… ans superamoled display

  • mj

This is excellent…I was just about to pre order the iphone 4 and let att rape me but now I can make sweet love to this!!! I just wonder how t mobile will handle video chat apps

    • StevenGlansburg

      poorly

  • stuck with tmo

Tmo needs high end phones. Without an iphone, and EVO, or Droid du jour, we are left with mid & low end sludge. Some us need to stay on t-mo for a variety of reasons and need a phone like this. I will seriously look at the SGS. Although personally, I want a EVO like spec’d phone.
Tmo really needs to step it up.

      You’re dumb

Ahhh who wrote this article because it didn’t make sense to me.

“Spotted on its way out of the FCC was the aforementioned SGH-T965 with 850/1900 GSM/GPRS/EDGE and T-Mobile friendly AWS/1900 WCDMA/HSPA on board.”

It states it on the label that it’s the SGH-T959 and AWS is 1700 not 1900. Am I missing something?

    • http://www.bgr.com Kelly Hodgkins

AWS in the specs refers to the 1700MHz band. Peruse the FCC docs and you will see that the phone transmits and was tested at 1712.4 – 1752.5 MHz (AWS 1700MHz WCDMA/UMTS IV) as well as 1852.4 – 1907.6 MHz (UMTS II/1900MHz). It does both.

The 965 was typo and fixed. Thanks for pointing it out.

      • JR

        THANK YOU!

  • Vinny

Dumb question, most T-Mobile Android lovers are dying and drueling for this device. When they get this phone in their inventory they will start taking over the industry. They will have the most up to date and fastest network in the country barring none. I will snag one of these bad boys so fast along with many of my friends. T-Mobile needs to start keeping top of the line devices in stock, Today’s educated customers are looking for the best.

  • Blayze04

I think a lot of people are still interested because this phone is higher spec’d than the EVO. This phone has the new SUPER AMOLED screen, a faster GPU and CPU than the EVO. The Samsung has the 1ghz Hummingbird which supposedly gets better battery life and performance than the snapdragon. Also Samsung is definitely better at making cameras than HTC. We will wait and see. I am hopeful. Not to mention none of the cool phones you mentioned are on T-Mobile.

  • Bunifa@SprintPOS

All of these new Android phones that haven’t launched yet are equally as special. Stop stirring the pot BGR

  • Android_Enthu

Like me, lots of T-mobile ppl are waiting. AT&T sucks big time & with tiered data-plan, Iphone 4 will suck big time.
I love T-mobile network, their customer service & HSPA+ speeds are going to be faster than even 4G offered by Sprint.
This phone has everything – check it out all at:
    http://www.electricpig.co.uk/2010/06/11/samsung-galaxy-s-everything-you-need-to-know/

@Kelly/BGR, Quick question – why there is no mention of frequency 2100 which is needed by T-mobile ?

    • Andrew Munchbach

AWS is the name for the 1700 MHz down 2100 MHz up spectrum. Saying AWS encompasses both.

      • ELK

I think you have your downlink and uplink swapped :)

  • Vinny

This product is going to be in demand because the most important factor is it’s running on T-Mobile’s 3+G Network which is going to be the fastest network in the USA. I am in suburb of Boston and it just starting to light up our area and it is like lightning, it is that fast. T-Mobile customers are going to love this when they get a taste. This device has what others lack, T-Mobile customers that want this very bad. I know I do.

    • vetal

      i do :)

  • Tiger1358

i gotta tell ya…i’ve got a friend who has the EVO and it has honestly made me consider leaving Tmobile for Sprint! The EVO is absolutely amazing AND beautiful. After I saw the Galaxy S, however, I have decided to stay with Tmobile (for now). I’m eligible for an upgrade on both my lines, so it may be worth it to stay and get that phone.

My BIG hesitation with getting the Galaxy S is the fact that it DOES NOT have a flash!!!! How can phone makers even think about making phones without flash anymore???!!! Also, I’m wondering if this phone will be compatible with Tmobile’s HSDPA+ speed??

One more thing that makes me pause (only slightly) is the fact that TouchWiz UI is soooooo ugly! I plan on rooting anyway, so I can easily change that, but it still looks weak right out the box. (plus, i have to wait until one of those genius android developers/hackers figure out a way to root the thing).

    • JR

This IMO is better than the EVO. As for Touch Wiz, it’s not any worse than a stock Android device.

    • elCheapo

exactly. I could love this phone if it only had a flash. What were they thinking???????

  • vetal

wow are you kidding me??? this phone is waaay better than evo 4g, its specs are better, its not so big, its perfect size between 3.7 and 4.3. i think this is the best android phone up to date. and the droid x is like way too big. and the motoblur thing it sucks.

  • sam

of course I’d be interested…if it went to AT

  • Srki

Verizon is not using GSM technology so most phones can’t be used outside of U.S, and for me that is not good. On the other hand T-Mobile is GSM (like rest of the world) and they unlock the phone for you. Not many carriers will unlock the phone.

Therefore Galaxy coming to T-Mobile is very good news. I still don’t get why they did not include flash for camera but no phone is perfect. I wonder if iPhone 4 will be able to make video calls to other non iPhone phones that support video calling like Galaxy, or will it be iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 only?

  • EnuffSaid

Kelly Hodgkins must be blonde, that’s why she thinking noone will be interested in this device, no wonder blondes are considered to be dumb. You have got to be kidding me, the first 4″ super AMOLED screen, 16 GB of internal storage on an Android Device expandable with 32GB microUSD, that makes it 48 GB, shipping with Android 2.1 with touchwiz 3.0, thinner than the iPhone, what more can we ask?

Oh wait, this is just a job for her and her management team is full of apple fanboys!!!! Feel sorry for you Kelly.

  • Vinny

The Galaxy S is a much better built device then the pushed out the door Evo. The Evo has more problems then can be listed. This new device will keep all the T-Mobile geeks that are Android crazy foaming at the mouth. I don’t think the big shots from T-Mobile realize just how many customers are looking for this phone. This is the best news for T-Mobile geeks. This phone along with the new 3+G network from T-Mobile is all what a geek needs. Thank You T-Mobile.

  • ian

galaxy s will be running the hummingbird processor not the snapdragon…hbird way faster. and the reason why we are interested is because it will be the best phone on tmobile.

  • Pete

tmobile better not eff this phone up !

  • Fulle

Everyone’s jumping all over Kelly’s comment, but come on! This is a nice piece of tech, it really is, with its super AMOLED screen (superior to the iPhone4′s IMHO, due to superior power consumption), 1GHz Hummingbird processor (not Snapdragon, you morons), and other perks. However, with the EVO already out, and the Droid X on the way, the Galaxy S’ thunder is getting stolen a bit. Not to mention the looming A9 dual core devices.

Out of the EVO4G, Droid X, and the Galaxy S, I think that Samsung has the best device. The Hummingbird Cortex A8 that Samsung is using, as well as the integrated GPU paired with it, seem to be a little better than the competition. Just a bit. The screen’s a little better, the build quality’s solid… I figure, this will be the flagship device for T-Mobile for a time.

But, at least for me, there’s no wow factor anymore. Sprint and Verizon are going to have similar devices, and there’s even the 5″ Dell Streak, that’s there to compete with this thing.

What would make this a lot more interesting… is a keyboard. But, I haven’t seen much regarding the Samsung Galaxy S Pro.

  • ZenDaddy

I have never had a flash on a phone be of any help, I’m always turning it off. It works if your 3 feet away and then washes everything out. Past 3 feet, doesn’t do anything. Nice to have the option I guess but nothing I really care about.

    • Nicholas

I use the flash on my bold 9700 as a flashlight all the time. Most used app world app!!

  • KyleB

First off, surprised nobody has mentioned the nexus one as far as the “tmobile doesnt have great hardware”
argument. I’ve been through a good number of phones, the G1, Mytouch 3g, iPhone 2g + 3gs, HTC HD2(Horrid Device) and now the Nexus and I can easily say that out of any phone on any network, I’d currently choose the Nexus. I know it isnt particularly locked to Tmobile but it does support their 3g/HSPA network (Which is ridiculously fast BTW) and is one of the top phones on the market. Froyo just makes it that much better.

Anyways, I have been following the Galaxy S for quite some time now and I can say with the release date coming closer, I’m getting ready to out my G1 and 3gs on the auction block to get my hands on one of these. I love my nexus but this Samsung is so damn sexy! Sure, the fact that it wont include flash is dissapointing but if you are buying a smartphone based on the quality of photos it produces then there is obviously something wrong with you.

This is a beautiful device, the touch wiz looks very similar to the iPhone (which may be a plus or minus user to user). Its not the sleekest but as long as I get my android homescreen widgets then I dont really care what my apptray looks like. Plus Im betting this device gets rooted and if cyanogen produces a rom, I’m sure it will be amazing. The super AMOLED screen is the stuff of dreams, especially because i use my device outdoors alot (running/fitness apps) and my nexus and iphone are almost impossible to see even on the brightest settings.

The speed and battery life alone are huge selling points to me as I use my phone while traveling a lot and i dont want to have to ramp my cpu down just to conserve battery, i want it all! And if this thing gets froyo (which ive read that theyre gearing up to release it in the fall for this device) it should only improve the performance and battery life.

This is THE Tmobile device to be had. Hands down.

  • Harry

You can’t say the nexus one, most people cannot afford to just pay the $530 outright for a nexus. You also cannot walk in to a store and have them fixed or exchanged nor walk into a store and test one out. Most of the people who upgrade actually put there phones on the even more plus plan and you can’t do that with the nexus one. I am on tmobile and I could care less about this phone.

  • CellSeller

i have been waiting for the pro to come out for a while now, but rumor has it that its shooting for sprint. i have tmobile and was willing to buy it unlocked…too bad. i would much rather have the keyboard to hold me together just in case the touchscreen decides to up and die. ah well. better to have one than neither.

  • john

Do it support video calling if yes then how?

  • JR

Well if this is better for her, she better get with it because what she wrote was way off, spec wise that is.

  • http://www.bgr.com Kelly Hodgkins

There is no better gig than BGR. ;-)

I took a few weeks off as I moved into a new house. Packing, moving and unpacking is the pits. Glad it is over.

  • JR

Kelly corrected it so i take back my comment.
