New Mac mini has HDMI port, SD card reader, unibody design

mac-mini-2010

As iPhone 4 pre-orders kicked off, visitors to Apple’s website were greeted with a teensy surprise this morning, as the Mac mini has received its long-rumored long-efresh. Milled out of a solid chunk of aluminum, $699 base model comes with an 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of RAM, 320GB HDD, and a NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics card. As expected, HDMI has replaced the DVI port (the Mini DisplayPort is still there) and a SD card reader now joins the four USB 2.0 ports and sole FireWire 800 port. If there’s no need for an optical drive in your life or if you just want something in the way of a compact server, there’s also the option of scraping it entirely and a nabbing a unit with a 2.6GHz processor, dual 500GB HDDs and 4GB of RAM for $999.

Very interesting update indeed. I wonder when the Apple TV update will happen?

at $700 for this Mini. Then there is a good reason to retire appletv.

This is it. A grand for a terabyte plus FULL computer running Boxee? Makes this the cable killer media center.
I’d happily cancel cable and pay for Hulu and Netflix and a business DSL and still save money with this.

      • Really?

You do realize you can do all the same things on a PC for about 1/3 less AND have a Blu-ray player… heck, at this point, even a BD burner.

The only thing this has over an HTPC is the tiny form factor… Shuttle PC is about as small as you’re going to get w/ PC, unless you choose to do the Net-top thing, but that would not be a good or fair comparison here.

Still, not hating on it, that mini-form is pretty damn awesome and its about damn time Apple started putting HDMI in their computers and laptops.

    Apple TV will be next!

    What waste….

It could be a little bigger and have more options.

No one will ever say, if it was one inch thicker I would not have bought it.

Apple is all fashion now. What a waste.

FYI, I have bought two mac mini, 9 iPhones. 4 MacBooks. And a couple iPods.

Currently I use the Nexus One and will never puchase another mac computer. From now on a pc with os x for me.

(p.s. I am buying the new iPhone 4, to replace my moms iPhone 3g. Only grandmas needs basic fisher pric simple phones….)

U sound like either a liar or an idiot. U blow thru that much Apple stuff but have nothing but negative to say? What would compell someone with such hate for a product brand to buy 17+ items from them & then end it with never buy again? Im not one to believe one brand is the “answer all brand” but seriously? It took 6 of their computers for u to say pc’s are better & 9 iPhones to say theres something better?

Yea ok & ive owned 7 Porches but now i drive a Cobalt SS & will never buy different!

  • Kevin

This would have been nice if they had not bumped the price up another hundred bucks. If they want to do that, then at least give us 4GB RAM standard. (even that’s stretching a $100 increase.)

I’m sorry, but is the SD card slot on the back?! Apparently no one at Apple uses SD cards (but a lot of them still use DVD & CDs – I guess iTunes isn’t that popular internally :)

    • T Man

Yeah, that’s a dumb place for it. No USB on the front too. Still, it’s a nice looking device and very compact.

      • chimchim

Nothing stopping you from turning it around if you want the messy cable look.

    • matthewdlyons

Agreed. I understand from an aesthetic design standpoint, but what about functionality? Who wants to reach around to the back of the unit every time they want to pop in an SD card? Sure you could get a USB card reader, but that kind of defeats the whole minimalist footprint.

  • Gregg

This needs the apple tv software. Then ditch the apple tv.

    • JHUK

      just use front row

  • Eric

I think Apple was last to the market with an SD card reader. I agree with others though: plugging the SD card in the back was about as inventive as making a 10″ iPod Touch and calling it an iPad.

  • Ned

Love the new look. Really love the addition of HDMI. Really disappointed that the refresh did not include a Blu-Ray option.

    • Really?

Apple does not want you to buy blu-rays when they are selling you movies via iTunes.

And for $700 – $1,000, you can get a PC, HTPC or PC laptop w/ blu-ray and HDMI…

    • tom

Blu-Ray is still a bag of hurt to Apple.

  • Tdot34

All looks no function. The case alone costs more than all the parts inside. The $1000 version has decent specs, but the $699 is an overpriced joke. SD reader and USB ports on the back, kinda useless. I do like the case, though.

  • SKINNI

It looks really good but like most say, the SD slot on back is awkward to say the least. I can see many using it as a home media server though so it should sell fairly well. I like Macs but yea Id probally spend a lil less & get a PC that has more for a media server

  • pheer6224

Nobody seems to have noticed that the power button is on the back as well. Makes me wonder why Apple doesn’t want users to turn their computers off…
