Microsoft announces the Kinect

kinect

Well it’s official — Microsoft formally announced the Kinect on Sunday evening with the aid of a performance by Cirque du Soleil. Previously known known as Project Natal, the Kinect plugs directly into the Xbox 360 and contains dual-cameras that are capable of tracking 48 points of motion without requiring gamers to use peripherals. The idea is that the Kinect will become the hub of home entertainment systems with titles and software for hardcore gamers while also attracting non-traditional gamers such as young children and the elderly to the Xbox. Exactly which game studios are backing the system have yet to be communicated, although titles touted Sunday by Microsoft include Kinect Sports, Kinectimals (an animal sim), Joyride, and Star Wars. Pricing, a release date and further details were not announced, although that’s hardly surprising considering Microsoft has its big E3 press conference scheduled for Monday morning.

I wonder what the red ring of death on the kinect will be called?

    • JayD

      prob REoD(Red Eye of Death)

    • Gary

Can’t possibly imagine it will ever be an issue.

This is easily the lamest add-on for a system ever created. No wonder the two top execs in the Xbox division just got fired.

Honestly Microsoft, dump this garbage and save PC gaming.

Have you watched that? It looks pretty sick. Add Panoramic 3D vision, and we’re getting somewhere.

      • ale5six1

looks awesome as long as they provide enough good titles to go along with it

  • mangenius

    Im rooting for these guys!!!

  • SnakeEyez

Cool tech, horrible games (so far)

It’s innovation. Now whether it works or not we will have to wait and see, but I for one appreciate it when companies leave the norm. It gives us options and inspires creativity. I only own a Wii, but if you can drop the controllers all together this will be a win.

Anybody ever see the movie Gamer? We’re getting there.

  • JB

Its kinda creepy. I feel like it has eyes, and Bill Gates is peering into my soul.

Dying to see how it will match up with Wii & PS3 in Motion.

  • Michael

i’m guesing $200-$300 for this unit..

Let’s hope the KINect takes off better than Microsoft’s megaflop twins the KinI/II

  • PHug

My G.F. and niece want this thing just for the brick breaker thing

  • Clint

    @Micheal…..
its a couple of camera sensors and software…..$2-300 is worth more than a whole 360.

This thing will likely start at a list price of $129.99 or $149.99 at its MAX. Anything more and people won’t bite. As it is….it is more marketable if they introduce it as a special or part of a package (2 games or something) at the above prices. If they really want to push it, put it on sale ASAP for $99 with games.

As for the innovation/tech in comparison to past video consoles…this is a step in the right direction…don’t know if it will catch on…dependent on good games.

In the PS3 motion wand thingy…thats just a copy of the WII…..no innovation there…just better tech. Microsoft is at least trying to improve stuff….Sony just wants more of a buy in so they can control more of what you own for a premium dollar.

can we please assassinate every single PR firm on the planet and start over? ‘kinect’? What am I, a redneck from the backwoods who learnt how to spells good frum my daddi?

Just call the god damn thing Microsoft Xbox Connect. Nothing screams “TOY” more than intentionally making up ‘hip’ spelling of common words… and this coming from a person who really wants Natal. Natal. I refuse to call it Kinect.

    • da_obvious!

have you ever thought that the kinect could be spelled in such a manner to resemble kinetics… you know.. movement..

      • sirpaul

lol I didn’t notice that, I was thinking the same thing “Lame” was saying. Although the name really doesn’t matter; what matters is if it works!

  • Jay

Seriously? “Kinect?” I wonder what the correlation is between THIS, and the MS Phone (kin) series.

I hope there’s NO correlation. Yikes.

I’m with “Lame.” It’ll always be Natal to me.

So if Microsoft has a big E3 conference this morning…. where the hell is the BGR coverage. You guys salivate for weeks upon hearing about Apple conferences, yet a Microsoft conference gets 1 lines buried in an Xbox article.

Stop the presses Apple has a new app coming out, we don’t know what it will be, but oh man, it might give us faster access to Apple.com man can you imagine access to the mothership in 0.3 seconds instead of 1 second. Oh Microsoft has an important conference today, but APPLE HAS A NEW APP !!!!

  • Sonya

    I want this.

  • SKINNI

Never owned an XBOX but ill be buying my first for this. Never liked their controller over PS but this thing is sweet. Not that theyre experts but i talked to a GS manager & he said the word theyre getting is that the price will be $150 in OCT & on Black Friday go to $130. For what ur gettin I think thats a good deal (If it works as good as that vid shows!)

  • Nokia N900

This thing has no buttons, you’re going to have to jump like a monkey to shoot.

    • sirpaul

I think u might be able to use some sort of controller alongside the unit.
