AT&T sends out apology emails to iPad 3G customers in wake of security breach

While the fallout continues over last week’s security breach which saw hackers gain access to the email addresses of some 114,000 AT&T iPad 3G customers continues, AT&T’s VP of public policy and Chief Privacy Officer Dorothy Attwood today sent out an email to everyone of AT&T’s iPad 3G data plan subscribers to explain the situation. While email addresses were obtained by the hackers, Attwood contends that the hackers were unable to access more critical things such as account passwords, AT&T’s network, or user’s iPads. Attwood also said that as soon as AT&T learnt of the hack on June 7th, it took swift action to prevent any further unauthorized exposure of customer email addresses” and patched up the hole which made the hack possible “within hours.” Of course this raises the whole question as to why it took AT&T six days to notify its customers that hackers had gained control of some of their personal information, but we imagine the FBI’s investigation into the matter might help clear some things up. You know, that or the surely dozens of lawsuits that are going to be filed over the matter. Hit up the jump to check out the email in its entirety.

Thanks, Adam!

My favorite part? The form letter “Dear Valued AT&T Customer” – everyone else now knows the names and email addresses of their customers, but they couldn’t be bothered to do a mail merge?

Hi where AT&T and where sending you this email because you already kno that all of your info I leaked and we wouldn’t apoligize I this wasn’t already leaked in the press

  • joe stedman

Were so screwed again by AT&T!

  • chachi

BFD. So some scumtards harvested a few hundred thousand email addresses. It’s only f’ing email. It’s not like they found anyone’s social security number and set up false identities and ruined anyone’s credit.

Surprise, if you want to know much of this info, all you have to do is look it up on pipl. Verizon sells out your phone number to marketing firms as standard practice without any security review unless you pay them extra to make it unllsted. This is hardly worse. Please stop making it seem like terrorists have assumed control of the power grid and Bruce Willis is driving a cab there to stop them.

We’re sorry we leaked your information,…
In all fairness, our credit department has concluded that you are a possibly going to default on your contract and we require $2200.99 to continue to be able to provide service to you. Please call us on your land line telephone if, this is acceptable and you would like to restart your service again.

    Thank you, AT&T CS L1 id10t.

Who cares? It’s email addresses. The penis enlargement spammers already had their emails addresses anyway. Wow, who would have expected iFad owners to be a bunch of drama queens?!?!?

    • RattyUK

Truth be told it is the faux reports covered by the press that are the drama queens – not seen any real outrage coming from the actual customers.

  • sick

    really AT

  • Sick

As I was saying really AT&T. Is that all there is to it. We have to move on with our life while we are exposed by your poor security. How about special deduction on our rates for victims. If nothing is been done then we will light a fire under your a sass

  • ATTSucksRocks

Here is the issue, they can do this sh*t all day and night because they know they have us… and I’ll bet not one person who responded will get rid of their service. So hack away and put out BS apologies at&t, everyone is still paying for your services.

Not with AT&T but nothing seems to be private any more. Of course we are used to telemarketers and junk mail. But email seems to be the final straw with everyone. It is for me. I am with VZW and if this had happened with them I would be upset too. Give em hell people.

  • lil baby

Gosh. Another reason to avoid AT&T. They are a terrible company, and they could care less about their customers and their customer’s satisfaction. I never really had a beef with AT&T but over the past 5 year or so they have really gained a lot of hatred towards them, and rightly so.

My service is fine and my customer experience has been excellent.I deal with Business care..Sounds like its time for you to move to another company and stop wining.

      • jawman

just because he had a bad experience doesn’t mean he is “whining”. what’s with internet trolls always calling someone a whiner because they had a problem with something? we don’t live in a perfect world dumbass.

  • drew dogg

Guess that’s why the government uses Verizon…

  • AT&T blows

ATT’s service is horrible and I’m sure Apple cant wait to jump ship from this friggin mess of a company. What the hell has happened to the coverage? Calls dropping everywhere and data is slow. WTF? For the first time, I’m considering droid. When does Verizon get the iPhone etc…?

    • tino72

Are you serious? do you really not know or do you just want to bitch..Once the Horrid iphone moves off att or at least it goes to other carriers it will make a impact on the quality of atts service..My service here was once bad until the turned on the 850 freq here and its been just fine every since..Go get your Droid..

  • DroidKnight

The iPad owners are going to want something more than a long apology letter.

  • Texan in the Snow

Let me translate the corporate speak. Dear customer we got caught. We have poor programming and testing. Much like the BP disaster money means more to us than your personal data. Some big bad hacker group (of course there is only one of these type of groups out there) is responsible for embarrassing us. Instead of taking ownership we will have our Privacy official (a lawyer) write something crafted by corporate communication than having our CEO apologize for having poor governance practices and poor privacy and security practices. Please remember that profit and coming up with some letter to keep our share holders happy is more important than our customer or putting in better controls. If this doesn’t work we will next blame our customers.

P.S. Note to strategy department, we can partner with a credit monitoring service. We can make even more money because of our poor practice.

  • mic ban

oh,money=information? I think if you really like ipad, you should not worry about your E-mail.
