Virgin Mobile Canada launches the HTC Legend

Sure low-cost carriers in the U.S. might have some of the best rate plans out there, but there’s no denying that when it comes to handset selection, Canada’s low-cost carriers have it locked down. A case in point is the HTC Legend, now available from Virgin Mobile. $349.99 on a 30-day contract or $79.99 on a 3-year deal will net Canadians a 3.2″ HVGA AMOLED display, 5 megapixel camera, 512 MB ROM / 384MB RAM, 600MHz processor, and Android 2.1 with Sense UI all crammed into a milled aluminum body. It’s not yet available in Saskatchewan and Manitoba because the network that Virgin shares with Telus and parent-company Bell hasn’t made its Prairie debut (Winninpeg excluded), but as of today it’s available everywhere else.

Is the legend available on any US carriers?

waiting waiting for att to launch it..

      • tom

you can keep on waiting. Just South of the border, there is only 1 GSM/HSPA national carrier supporting 850/1900 mhz. ATT. ATT has too many phones to choose from. (of course there is T-Mo using AWS)

Unlike here in Canada, we now have 2 physical GSM/HSPA network, used by 5 carriers and 2 AWS network. Just the standard HSPA band, those 5 carriers can choose to offer many more devices to attract customers

CDMA is a dead end. I am sad to see neither Verizon nor Sprint wants to move out of it sooner. I feel your pain.

Why? It sucks. 600MHz, low resolution.

      • tino72

Have you seen the line up of android phones on att??
this is perfect for my wife..

I just sent in screenshots; they allow tethering out of the box, and there are bell media apps pre-installed.

    GREAT phone.

It may be ARM11, but it has ADRENO hardware acceleration (same as Snapdragon) and the extra RAM and clockspeed make this an enjoyable experience.

One of the better low to mid end ‘Droids to hit Canada. And Telus is getting the Desire. If only Rogers would launch something worthwhile. The X10 is crappy and the Liquid E, although pretty good specs, is kind of ugly. Liquid E still beats X10, but what to chosesqbetween Liquid E and Legend. Specs or sexiness?

    • tino72

Its funny what phones we consider low to mid range these days..lol..the specs of the Legend not too long ago would be considered a high end phone

    • Juicy47

If you are signing a 3yr, wait for the Desire. If you want no contract, Liquid E or Legend is best value.

  • tino72

    3 yr contract?? wow, canada

  • tino72

as i said NO TOO LONG ago a phone like this would have been higher end..1ghz processors, and HD hasnt always been the case…sucks? No

  • sharla

i played with it at a virgin kiosk today… very nice, really fast and easy right out of the box

To those south of the border, or Canadians on TELUS/Rogers, http://www.mobileincanada.com is already providing unlock codes.

    Excellent Service!

I wonder if it will sell as good as the iPhone did in Canada

I would kill for something like this on Virgin Mobile is the US. Just started using their service. I bought the LG Rumor Touch cuz it wasn’t expensive and has a touchscreen, the main reason I didn’t get the blackberry they offer. I’m hoping maybe this christmas they will get an android handset or something.

Virgin Mobile Canada is a sub brand of Bell Mobility but in no shape are they considered a “bargain brand” their price plans are almost identical of Bell Mobility and Rogers Wireless and not to mention they still force their clients to sign a lenghty 3 year term. if you goto http://www.virginmobile.ca and then goto http://www.bell.ca and compare price plans, you will NOT find much difference in plans. on the other hand, WIND Mobile, Mobilicity and Public Mobile are considered to be real “bargain brands”, Fido also has some decent price plans, but still nothing special… the Canadian Telco is a joke, Biggest land size in the planet, well over 10 carriers, 5 more coming soon, only 34 million or so population and 3 year contracts… they need American companies to come and take over some big chunks of the current telcos such as Rogers or Bell or even Telus and use their American style price plans and only 1 or 2 year contracts.. i mean what the heck is this: $50 bucks at Rogers gets you: 500mb data, evenings and weekends at 6, 200 mins day and unlimited texting. (200 mins per month is about 4 to 5 mins per day).. they dont want you to use to the phone to talk on, just keep it in your pocket to show off with.

Ali, you need to go take a hammer to your keyboard… it kind of seems like you’ve already taken one to your head.

    @Baester,

why? he’s about right. Canadian phone companies rape their customers. it’s the truth!
