Motorola: Video calling calling coming to future phones

Speaking to reporters after a presentation at the Executive Club, Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha said that his company will soon be announcing up to four handsets — presumably Android — that are capable of making video calls through front-facing cameras. Even though Jha said he has “never been a great believer” in video calling, he admitted that it is something that should be added to handsets, especially in light of the release of the EVO 4G and upcoming iPhone 4. In other Motorola news, Jha said that the Droid is selling very well through Verizon despite the fact that there is a shortage of components including displays from Samsung, an issue that is currently affecting sales of the HTC Droid Incredible.

video calling would be counterproductive for me. the person on the other end would never stop throwing up from how ugly i am.

    • Bard

I’m pretty ugly too, so i’m used to it. Will you be my video chat friend?

  • Jake

I am sure glad Moto is still around.

  • grrr

I want the 2 ghz motorola monster.

  • timmy

Motorola is making a huge comeback. 2ghz processer and a front facing camera. All they need now is a better KB.

  • The Prophet Mohammad

Does the Xtreme have a front facing camera?

    • SKINNI

Im wondering the same because if so, Im tossing my INCREDIBLE. My DROID grew on me way more than my INCREDIBLE. Its a nice phone but I think i like the simplicity of the Motorola UI better so wanting to get back to Motorola (minus MOTOBLUR)

      • The Prophet Mohammad

Everything I’ve read says its either 2.2 or that and ninjaBLUR? whatever that is

      • SKINNI

Yea ive read the same but its also been said “the BLUR” can be turned off so im hoping that at least

  • Whatsa “sell” fone?

i call you so I don’t have to see your face! Now you want me to look at you while I call you to break up with you? GEEZ!!

  • Dogfather

I wonder how will work on VZW because their CDMA network can’t do voice and data simultaneous…!!!!

    • Michael Phelp’s Bong

It will be wifi only. Verizon’s 3G is definitely not capable of streaming video, well. It’s also the same reason why the iphone is going to be wifi only on At&t. Until LTE (a faster connection) it’s just not going to happen.

You guys realize their is this feature called VoIP, which basically treats voice like data and allows you to make video calls with both video and audio via your data connection. That’s how Skype does it on your PC/phone, and how the EVO 4G does it on Qik over 3G.

So video calling is coming to every phone yet…more carriers are going to introduce data transfer tiers. Is this a conspiracy? Video has to cost a hell of a lot of data to transfer, doesn’t it? So more video among phones and carriers, yet bandwith is getting eaten up faster than carriers can expand it. Video is gonna help this?

  • WalterSobchak

Are they going liscence this tech from Apple?

    • http://www.erictate.com/ Eric

License what? Apple didn’t invent video conferencing or the front-facing camera on a cell phone.

      • WalterSobchak

        Joke… sorry.
I just wanted to beat ernielm to the punch

  • ScreenToucher

@Walter: Nokia has had video calling for years.

  • Deaf

As a sign language user, I’m excited to see more phones coming with video calling capability.

  • lscup7187

I don’t see this technology being widely used with the upcoming data restrictions coming to possibly all carriers. You will top out your data plan with 2-3 video calls. Just doesn’t make sense.

    This is so 2005.

We were conducting video calls on GSM based networks 5 years ago in London.
