webOS notifications designer returns to Apple

General

Apple Logo-Black + White

Palm’s brain drain shows no signs of letting up, as it was revealed today that Rich Dellinger, the man responsible for many of the icons in webOS and the creation of the “non-intrusive banner notification system used in webOS”, has left the company after 3 years and 11 months. Now a senior UI designer at Apple, it appears that Dellinger left Palm immediately after it was announced that HP was purchasing Palm for $1.2 billion. Many are speculating that Dellinger was hired in an effort to help turn Apple’s obnoxiously obtrusive push notification system into something more in line with what is offered by webOS and Android.

FIRST … AS USUAL APPLE OWNS DROID… IPHONE 4 FTW… FUCK DROID TRASH

    • destardi

If it were first, google would be copying iphone, not iphone copying google.

iphone is basically a powerful t.o.y.

      Toy.

Widgets? Notifications? Multitasking? Customized wallpapers? Customized notifications?

      iphone=weak

      • MikeD

You can feel the bragging rights just seeping away huh.

You guys don’t realize that its first to market that does it right makes the difference.

Like I said, I’ve come to realize the haters are helping the very device they hate with the retarded lies and focus like a laser on totally geek stuff that 99% of the world don’t care about. So keep it up.

    • MikeD

Don’t act like them. Have some class man.

  • Mohammad

When is the next palm handset coming out hp?

    • Gauntlet Down

      Surely you jest.

  • Frank

Cool now hopefully at the next meeting he can tell Steve Job’s “Shut up! I know what I’m talking about”

  • tdubz

This is great news…well for iPhone. This in my opinion is the only thing Android still has over iPhone. But its a big one.

    • destardi

Not sure…can the iphone assigne individual notification sounds/ringers for people?

      • The Prophet Mohammad

yeah, but you should just ignorance is bliss. keep it up fandroid

    • RT

the only thing? I guess your forgot about a little thing called customization.

I had a Droid for 28 days starting on its release date. I didnt like their notification system on Android. If you get a text or some other notification, all you got was a tiny little red LED. Then you had to unlock the phone, open the notification area then click on it to see what it was. With my iphone if I get a text, IM, or some other push notification the actual message shows up on the screen. All I have to do is read it and click the power button once and the screen turns back off and I can put the phone back in my pocket. Its much, much, much simpler and quicker than Android. That was one of the huge disappointments that I had with the Droid and why I returned it within the first 30 days and kept my iphone 2G. Iphone is that much better than Android that I kept a 2G iphone over a 3G Android phone. Hands down its better, dont even get me started on the craptastic apps in the marketplace. Can anyone say windows 3.1? Thats what those crappy little java apps looked like compared to beautiful native apps on iphone.

    Best feature of iPhone 5!

  • Davis

Good. Maybe if they get the biteSMS and Notifier features into the normal OS I won’t need to jailbreak anymore.

  • MikeD

This is good news. This is the last thing haters will have to brag about. Once this is in place then maybe we can focus on what’s really important.

Real world usefulness and good implementation. Ease of use. Set it and forget it. Rather than the stupid mine is bigger than yours crap.

    • bonesb

Agreed. I used to think the “Chevy” vs “Ford” arguments were juvenile and asinine, but at least you could take home a hot chick in your rig.

  • ScottW

Wait, I thought Apple’s OS “Just Worked”? I guess it didn’t just work well enough.

  • Reggie S

WOW! So many Apple haters on this thread!

Funny that there are Android phone releases every other week and you still don’t have the market share that the iPhone does.

Also, why is it sooo difficult to get an update on an Android device? It’s almost like you have to buy another phone to get the latest rev of the OS.

    • ernielm

Reggie, this blog’s for Apple haters only. Apple fanboys need not apply. These guys see Apple product users as weak people that can’t use technology. I don’t think they know what they are talking about, but I am screwed cause I am a hybrid, iOS and Android lover. :-)

  • Obisununome

Finally someone who knows what they are doing, the push notification on webos in my opinion was superior to androids. This is a great leap forward for apple. Apple’s problem is they are always trying to perfect things before they release it. This is why people give them so much hassle. Sometimes you just have to take a chance, and experiment, you can always correct it with updates.

  • patrick

still going to be a year or so before iphone sees any change in notifications. And anyone who says that the current system is nit annoying is lying. I wonder if taskbar notifications like android uses are patented?

    • PhxBlue

Annoying, yes. But not to the point of abandoning a phone I enjoy and turning into a 12 year old so I can engage in flame wars on the internet.

  • Chris

“Returns to Apple” makes it sounds like he was with Apple, then went to Palm, and is now back at Apple. That isn’t the case, though. Your headline is misleading. Do you guys have editors?

    • MikeD

A lot of Ex-Apple folk were at Palm. Its possible that he is one of them. Not sure.

Any proof found to confirm he was an ex-Apple employee?

  • Vik

The person posting as the prophet- it’s disrespectful to Muslims. Please stop.
    Thank you

    • Invid

Surely, it couldn’t be that his name is Mohammad.

      Get over yourself.

  • Counsel

    Stuff that 99% don’t care about…

Those iPhone users get educated, and I bet they too start having a bad taste for some of the iPhone limitations. I use a 1st gen iPhone, but I can see the evo is spec superior to the ip4. You can still prefer any phone, but there really is no need to hate any phone or any user…

    • MikeD

      I stand by that number 99% don’t.

Case in point. We were hammered over and over and over about removable batteries. remember the first iPhone round of dissing. Well most people didn’t care. in the End nobody buys them. Every friend I know that has a Droid device never bought an extra battery.

Multitasking. You guys swore it was the end all. Nobody cared. The iPhone and Blackberry still outsold.

Specs means very little when USABILITY means more. Raw power means nothing. All the devices including are fast enough to do most everything people want. So the stupid diarrhea of the mouth geeks have is tiring about what’s faster is stupid by now, they all are fast. The megapixel rant is stupid because its the “sensor” thats more important.

Lets see what the developers do with these devices is what matter. Lets see what people are using them for. Thats what matters. 99% of the public doesn’t give a hoot about rooting their device. You guys can’t seem to apply common sense. Maybe if Android commercials could emulates Palms latest it would make more sense to the real consumers and not just Geeks that want to brag they are running 20 apps at the same time. for what? Again nobody cares.

What’s going to separate the devices are their stability, methodology, efficiency, security and support/ecosystem around them. And Apple nor Blackberry nor anybody has a lock on that. They all can only try to do their best and the consumers will flock to what works for them.

If all geeks worry about is specs. I can see why the iPhone and Blackberry outsell. Because there is much more to a device than raw specs. Why Geeks on both sides argue irrelevant things is just sad.

VIK: in the name of your Islam, the world as we all knows- goes to hell,so please don’t be such disrespectful a take all so-called-peaceful people as you are and get the f*** out of this solar system.thanks in advance.

  • jawman

shouldn’t there be a non-compete in his contract from when he took the job with palm, now owned by hp?
    i smell a lawsuit.

  • k4ever

It seems to me that you guys just love to post doom and gloom about Palm. Why are you not posting some of the success stories from Palm also? After reading this story http://www.webosroundup.com/2010/06/palm-pdk-party-draws-one-helluva-crowd-at-wwdc/ I think Palm is doing alright. Then again, I don’t work for BGR.

  • Vik

Anti Vik- thanks for proving how intelligent you are on an Internet blog. You think maybe your ignorance is helping the world go to hell? Do you know any of the facts or let me guess you watch the “news” to keep up to date?

I like iphones and also respect droids, I think is a healthy competition, but I dont know why I see droids as a “option” for the iphone and no backwards
