Nexus One hacked to support 720p video recording

General

Google-Nexus-One-4

The Nexus One’s inability to record videos in HD has always been a bit of annoyance, but thanks to a member of the xda-developers community, 720p video recording is now a go on the one true Google Phone. To get the mod to work you’ll need to be running Cyanogen’s CM5.0.8test3 and up. This means that for the time being Froyo is not supported, but a remedy for the lack of love for 2.2 is said to be coming soon. Click on through to check out a video shot by a Nexus One running the mod and then hit up the read link to grab the patch.

Sweet! Any 720p love for my hero? Will it choke anything less than a snapdragon?

    Oh, sorry, firsties…

  • baaadandy

This is great. A phone (and a great one at that) that is half a year old is still pumping out updates and features that the new iPhone will sell as revolutionary. I wish I possessed the ignorant bliss it must take to be wrapped up in the iPhone delusion. Sorry, but the walled garden is not the place to be.

And yeah, I made this comment about the iPhone when it had nothing to do with nor related to it. Sue me.

    • Jayhammy

Be careful. You might be sued by Apple for patent infringement.

      @baaadandy

You and many other Android users have a serious iPhone envey. I have yet to come a cross a iPhone thread or Android thread where you guys just stick to the damn subject.

Look this hack for the nexus one is good. and it extends the device capabilities as many others updates have for other the devices.

You guys go way out of you way to continue to berate the iPhone. Good or bad, both platforms are going to be around.

I’ve been compiling data on this iPhone hater attitude. And what I am finding is that its actually helping the iPhone. The way over the top lying is actually helping the side you guys love to hate. Talk about Karma.

Just enjoy your Nexus One and stop calling people names. If you are happy with what you have, stay on the positive road.

First of all: *envy. (just helping out my dyslexic generation)

Secondly, I can see why you get upset when people bring Apple into an Android post, or vice versa. Many times it is presented in a trolling fashion, which nobody likes.
Although, sometimes you have to consider that Android and iPhone are the two main competitors in their market, and therefore are NEVER unrelated.

baaadandy’s comment was not completely out of line. It was filled with factual information regarding both devices.

Now, instead of stating some fanatical view of Android users being envious of iPhone, defend the iPhone with some factual information. If it is well-written enough, I’m sure some people will appreciate it.

Here is an opening sentence for you:
        “Dang, that’s actually pretty awesome.”
and then you move on to your defense:
“Just remember, the iPhone’s 720p video recording is still at a much higher frame rate. The phone is also equipped with a better lens, which can’t be fixed with a software hack.”
and finish with something like this:
        “Still very impressive, nonetheless.”

      • TechnoBrotha

        Awesome reply!!!

      • MikeD

        @StevenHamburg

I agree and I have written the very same speech before. numerous times. So its refreshing to read your reply.

I am just tired of have to go through 10 replies at a time just to find a response that actually makes sense or not some fanboy drool. Talking about technology should be much more reasonable conversations.

I don’t have a Nexus One. I wish I could but AT&T sucks where I live. I honestly have no iPhone envy either, it’s just humerous to ruffle feathers.

And obviously there are plently of geeks/non tech-illiterate people who choose the iPhone because it is a very capable device. My comment was regarding the blind following the every move of Apple because they think Apple can do no wrong and is the only phone that works. I have met more people than I care to, and good friends that I have, too, act as though the iPhone was the first smartphone and the iPod is the only portable media device out there. I owned a 2nd gen iPod which I loved. Now, I wouldn’t buy another one and anytime I have to help someone with an iPod and am forced to use that POS excuse for media managment that is iTunes, I puke a little in my mouth.

android has a lot of draw backs.

Fragmentation – as older versions of Android become outdated and security holes are found in different parts of the OS, exploits become available. As exploits become available for the older versions that some carriers won’t be patching right away, the seedy programming underground writes apps that take advantage of those holes. There is a virus out already for your android os.
Copy/paste sucks, no matter what mobile platform you use. It’s just that Apple really does do it better.
Apps – There may be 200,000 plus for iPhone, and a lot of them are very relevant. It’s probably about 50k that are only there to annoy everyone with their crap, and usually those apps get buried when the user base point out they suck.
Ease of use/simplicity/user experience/integration. And this is a big one. The iPhone “just works” for most people, Android is a little less seamless and can be more daunting to novice user.
A true unified inbox. To be fair, this isn’t coming until iPhone 4.0, but I installed the developer build on my iPhone 3GS just for this feature and it’s fabulous. Android has separate apps for Gmail and Mail. Fail.
Media player. Apple’s built-in iPod app beats Android’s Music app handily because it includes support for podcasts and videos built in. I KNOW, Android 2.2 includes support for Android Music Streaming Service (from its acquisition of Simplify Media)
Software Updates. Apple releases its iPhone OS updates simultaneously for all devices, Android, not so much. Witness Froyo/Android 2.2, Nexus One users are getting it now, but devices running Sense UI (a.k.a. HTC Incredible) are getting it in the “second half of 2010.” Seriously Why?
Android is junk and they need to get with program. Wow that htc weather widget is getting fucking old. Most of apps suck and good luck with crap version you have( 1.5,1.6,2.12.2)
Cydia is more efficient than the entire droid community. All the crap phones being churned out by these manufactures look stupid and plain. These manufactures should get down on their knees and lick googles ass. If it wasn’t for Google it would have been game over for most of these manufactures.
        market share or profit share?
let’s see 8million manufactures making android devices vs. 1 company and 1 os.
that 1 company sold 85 million units worldwide.
with a robust margin. Not including 2 million ipads.
while 8 million manufactures compete with each other at slim margins(due to heavy saturation)
thats why smart companies are building their own os. it’s not long before android will be dead, for no other reason but profitability. capitalism in the end will win out. Tell me how much longer is htc going to pay Microsoft for the use of android. The really big companies are going to start using there own os.

buddy, world will love to have Nexus One with 720p Video Recording. i hope it will work as you spoke about it

  • Will

Man, as SOON as they get this working on Froyo and Cyanogen releases CM6.0, I KNOW this is gonna be included. In fact, I wouldn’t be suprised in the least if it was included in the upcoming 5.0.8 release. Utterly surprised that Google didn’t make this move first, honestly.

    N1 FTW.

  • jeff

Doesn’t look like true 720p, more like scaled up 480p

  • Big Papi

After my wife robbed me of my N1, I had to get another one. Always something new to do on this phone!

  • Joel

This can be done on DROID too its a matter of modifying build.prop to have the phone record at higer mbps framerate and resolution.. had this done for 6 months on DROID already… not really news

  • http://(null) loki

Nice, I’ll tell ya, the xda-developers are awesome.

    One point I will make.

all phones are slightly fragmented. iots a fact of life.

case in point the 3g and 3g is could do video but wasnt allowed on 2g natively.

Ive installed every version of android on my g1 including froyo.

You can even install android on an iphone… fragmentation is a copout.
