Good news for Android users situated in Canada and and 11 Western European nations, as today Google announced the immediate availability of its free Google Maps Navigation application in Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and Switzerland. To get Google Maps Navigation 4.2 you’ll need to live in the aforementioned countries and have an Android phone running 1.6 and up. Also announced by Google was the addition of support for French, German, Italian and Spanish for Google Voice Search. This update applies not only to Android, but BlackBerry and iPhone as well. No update to the application is needed to gain support for the additional languages, but if you’re the paranoid type you can grab the app at m.google.com or the iTunes App Store.

Free doesn’t necessarily mean its good.

      • WalterSobchak

You have clearly never used Google Maps Nav.
Most POIs and while you are sitting there on your Garmin or tomtom for 10 minutes trying to chicken peck everything in, google users longpress search button “Navigate to sushi” done.

      • Mr Magoo

Yup very true and had I not used it I may agree, but honestly it’s very good IMHO.
Yes its not got ALL the features of a paid for app. Are they really worth it? Hey if it goes to iPhone then cool.

Yes I know the iP4 has lots of cool features, that could not be denied only a very silly person would even bother. This was just a reply to the silly 1st post Android may not be perfect but the Google Nav feature is a killer one and if Google/Apple were every to allow it then it could only add to the iPhones appeal and sales.

when is Blackberry getting google navigation?

    • Spazmogen

      B:
      m.google.com

Google nav is already out for Blackberry.

“This update applies not only to Android, but BlackBerry and iPhone as well. ” from above.

      • b

Unfortunately not…the update for bb is google vice search. ” Also announced by Google was the addition of support for French, German, Italian and Spanish for Google Voice Search. This update applies not only to Android, but BlackBerry and iPhone as well”

  • Spazmogen

    Walter:
It will work up here, but you’ll get bent over by your carrier for International Data Use. Get used to that stretched feeling.

Which is why I am looking at Garminfone: maps stored on phone, not over the air. I’m in the USA 2x a year and won’t pay for international data to my carrier as it’s $30 a month!

    • rederikus

      That’s the key isn’t it.

You usually need GPS/NAV the most when you are outside your own country. This is th eone time when your carrier can really shaft you with data chages.

What is needed is an app that stores the maps on the phone, like the Garminphone and then, optionally does updates over the dataplan.

  • Jeeverz

    Finally, Canada gets some love.

  • josiah

Is the maps navigation feature available on the BB? Free turn by turn voice guided navigation? Even BB maps doesn’t offer anything like that.

  • hemdroid

It’s funny that they are telling us about Canada maps, but yet the map shown on the Droid is of Fenway Park. Boston is part of Canada now?

  • roneel

ok where is this update for blackberry ?? its not even on the m.google site …..unless there saying it was added to google maps

i even search google maps navigation for blackberry and i get this

    http://www.google.com/mobile/navigation/

    theres no download for blackberry

    • Ben

To get Google Maps Navigation 4.2 you’ll need … an Android phone running 1.6 and up.

    • Spazmogen

Or did they just mean the voice part?

      It’s ambiguous.

  • Dara

Well, coming off of a weekend where I would have missed two tee times if I’d relied on Google Maps, I can’t say that I’m ecstatic that now I can have a voice sending me 6 km in the wrong direction rather than just reading the lie off my screen.

I’ll stick with Ovi Maps, the maps are on my memory card and are far more accurate than Google when you’re trying to find something other than a downtown Starbucks.

  • Emil

Unfortunately there is still one big problem in using the Google Maps Navigation. In Switzerland the roaming is very expensive. Even with a subscription with a flaterate (without limits) you pay around 150 Francs (that’s approximately 131 Dollars). That’s why I bought an Offline navigation. I look forward to google ;) Yay!
