Not long after it pledged to update the myTouch 3G to Android 2.1, today a leaked document from T-Mobile revealed that the carrier is planning to further kick it up a notch with the release of Android 2.2. In addition to that, myTouch 3G owners will also get an updated version of the Faves Gallery alongside the addition to the Genius button and support for Exchange. No word yet on when the update will actually drop, but we imagine this update will involve at least a little bit of an agonizing wait.

I gave up waiting for slow-tmo and updated to cyanogenmod 6.0 now that it is stable. Unfortunately I need to load all my apps and restore my data.

I called T-Mobile customer support yesterday. I was very disappointed about their response. Unfortunately, if your device is myTouch 3G (like mine). They DON’T have any plan to give us any Android 2.2 update. They confirmed that only sent update to myTouch Slide, NO PLAN on 3G. And they confirmed our machine will be 1.6.
Wtf, I told them tmobile should listen to existing customers and take care of our needs. They don’t care, I told them tmobile is focing existing customers to leave, they didn’t want to response that and ignored. So basically, I am leaving tmobile, tmobile really sucks. They don’t care if you stay or leave.

Gary, what on earth makes you think that anyone at T-Mo customer support has a clue as to what they are talking about?

It’s possible that the CS person you talked to was correct but there’s an equal chance they have no valid information.

Check out the mytouch forums. They kicked me out for 48 hours for complaining about not receiving the update.

Not sure what they are doing thinking they can just do a jedi mind trick on their customers.

I just spoke with t mobile and the update has been released it just does not come to everyone at once. So wait patiently it is coming!

Zion, i do not believe you.

anyone else with me on this?

  • Lud

@killtheunicorn I don’t believe Tmo either. So what gave with their stupid magazine and the big announcement of “no phone left behind”? I’m going to call myself and get a response, then file a complaint with the PUC if it turns out we’re screwed. I would want out of my contract without any penalty – that article is a promise, in print.

Though word has leaked out over the course of the last week, T-Mobile has officially confirmed that it is offering Android 2.2 Froyo via an over-the-air update to the HTC-made myTouch 3G. The myTouch 3G was the second Android phone to hit the market, and first debuted in February 2009. It went on sale in the U.S. later that year.
The update process began on October 13, according to T-Mobile, and the software is being distributed in waves to myTouch 3G users. T-Mobile expects the process to last until October 31.

The biggest will be the new integrated Microsoft Exchange client, which supports email, calendar and contact sync. Anyone using a myTouch as their business phone will be pleased by this.

The on-board Gmail application has also been updated. T-Mobile notes that Android 2.2 Froyo brings improvements to inline images, colored label support, quicker navigation through the inbox, and the option to include quoted text in replies.

T-Mobile also calls out the new Faves Gallery. This gives customers quick access to their 20 favorite contacts. Users can scroll through it and se all the most recent communication with their 20 Faves, which includes text messages, email, social network updates, and so on.

Other improvements include changes to the camera and camcorder software, more language support, improved Google Maps and YouTube applications, and the most up-to-date versions of Facebook and Twitter.

This update applies only to the original myTouch 3G. If you were one of the lucky few to score the myTouch 3G Fender Limited Edition or the myTouch 3G slide, the update for those devices isn’t quite there yet.
