Turn your EVO 4G into a free Wi-Fi hotspot

Sprint’s announcement that it was going to charge customers $30 per month to turn their EVO 4G into a Wi-Fi hotspot was met with a lot of criticism, but as the saying goes, good things come to those who wait. A weekend update made the popular android-wifi-tether app now allows EVO owners to tether over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to your heart’s content. To use the app you’ll first need to root your EVO, but thanks to unrevoked, anyone can root their EVO in a matter of seconds. After you’ve obtained root access, simply download 2.0.2.pre14 and up. One major drawback of the app is that it does not include support for WPA/WAP2 encryption, but so long as you’re willing to place your trust in WEP you’re good to go. That is provided your EVOs Wi-Fi isn’t on the fritz.

    unrevoked doesnt give true root or anything and you can’t even write in recovery so no custom ROM’s etc

    I used my EVO as a hotspot yesterday. I never signed up for a $30 plan, was never prompted during the setup. It was quite easy. Oh, and that’s WITHOUT rooting the phone. It was pretty sweet — 4G routing WiFi to my MBPro — easy and pretty fast.

    So how did I enjoy this wonderful event w/o spending $30 or rooting my phone? Are S|P customers exempt from the $30? I wouldn’t think so.

      For the first 30 days it’s free. After that, you pay $30 a month.

      You can use it with out paying for it, but then after a while if they notice you are using alot of data then they will block your data use… because I teatherd my PRO2 and didn’t pay any extra but sprint told me I would have to pay extra if I wanted to keep using it.

    I just followed all the links and did this. It works! Im using it right now for my laptop to write this! It was very easy to do. (It has to be cause i am kinda stupid.) Screw the man and his jerky ass $30 a month and/or 30 month taste test! Although I am still being screwed out of $10, for now (Los Angeles)

    I think I heard somewhere that WiFi tethering over 4G was free, and that the $30/mo. only applies to EVDO tethering.
