Is the EVO 4G plagued by poor Wi-Fi reception?

General

htc-evo-4g

It certainly seems that way. All across the interwebz, proud new EVO owners are saying they’re having a horrible time when it comes to Wi-Fi signal strength. Some users claim to only have 1 bar of signal regardless of their proximity to a router, while others say that you need only be a few feet from a router to have the signal bottom out. It is not clear whether or not the issue is hardware or software related, although it appears that transmission speeds via Wi-Fi are relatively good when in range of a router. We’ve reached out to Sprint for comment, but so far all we’ve been told is that they’ll have their team investigate the matter and get back to us. In the meantime, how has your EVO been fairing in the Wi-Fi department?

Thanks, TJ!

    BACKUP your DATA …
    1. Factory Data Reset (home, menu, settings, privacy >Factory Data Reset)
Phone will warn about erasing all data, so make sure your data is backed up..
    2. After phone restarts: (takes about 3 minutes)
a.OBE (Out of Box Experience) starts (skip to setting up Gmail account).
    b. Skip to complete OBE and allow Evo to finish booting.
c.On home screen, touch menu, settings, wireless & networks.
    3. Enter wifi settings via wifi settings (set up and manage wireless access points)
    a. Touch WI-FI (Turn on Wi-Fi)
4.Under Wi-Fi networks select desired network.
    a. Enter network password and verify info.
    b. Connect
5.Touch network name to view connection details (Status-connected, speed, channel, signal strength, security, and ip address. My speed went from 1 or sometimes 11Mbps to 48Mbps!
    6. Return arrow to previous page (Wireless & networks)
    a. Scroll down and uncheck “Mobile Network”.
    b. Touch home. All Apps, Internet.
    c. Don’t enter your PCS phone #.
    7. Touch address bar and enter the following web address to test your speed:
    mobilespeedtest.com, enter
    8. Touch “run speed test” and note results..
    a. re-run speed test with the 1Mb file as suggested.
    9. I like the “speedtest.net app in the market. I use it on my 3Gs and my Touch Pro
Notes: On back to back speed tests using speedtest.net with the 3Gs and the Evo, the Evo returned
    3060kbps vs 3Gs 4269kbps.

It seems all recent htc phones are shit.

  • The Thurmanator

My Evo is getting only 1 (out of 3) bar(s) of reception while my laptop is getting 3 (out of 5) bars of reception, but accoring to speedtest.net they are both downloading, uploading, and pinging at the same rate. Makes me wonder if this is more an issue with what the software is interpreting as signal strength rather than a lack of signal strength itself.

  • b-radddd

WiFinder shows i have 3 bars of wifi, while android indicates i only have 1. my speed tests where up to par with my laptop, this is most likely a issue like the thurmanator said about an issue with the way the software is interpreting the signal.

I concur that the signal strength indicator is way off. The problem is that the phone thinks it’s not getting a signal, when in fact the signal is just fine. The phone then won’t allow you to use a browser, etc… because apparently, wifi overrides 3G or 4G.
It’s frustrating, and the phone’s going back to Radio Shack this morning. IPhone 4 here I come!

If htc doesn’t release an update to fix this soon before iPhone 4 corms out then i. Am. Switching back to iPhone 4,jail breaking. And using sky to video chat, hopefully i can chat with desktop. Computers as well

I think the wifi speed is very ok. I found a test report on web. http://www.androidcentral.com/evo-4g-wifi-speed-test-you-might-be-surprised-results

I right under a Sprint/Clear 4G tower (one big lock and it is on a hill) and Sprint’s coverage 4G sucks over a period of time inside a building. There are going to be a lot of unhappy frustrated people when they notice the EVO 4G flipping down to 3G.

I plan to now just go with the new iPhone 4S and be done with it.

I bougth the phone and traveled to Panama. I totoally rely on WI-FI here. I have not being able to use any hotspots here. This is crazy. At ny nice´s house, I only get full strength at one foot from the router. After 10 feet, I show one bar and no data through.

  • John in Orlando

Yes. For a while I thought it was just me. But I can be a few feet from a wireless access point and tester between one bar and none.

Does anyone realize the headphones set will double as an antenna. I gained 2 bars plugging in my small earbuds.
