HTC EVO 4G breaks Sprint's first day sales record

Turns out the ages old adage that a cutting-edge product plus hype equates to big first day sales, as Sprint today announced that the Friday saw the HTC EVO 4G smash the carriers records for first day handset sales. Not only did it outsell the previous two record holders in the Palm Pre and Samsung Instinct, but in its first 24 hours of availability Sprint sold three times more EVOs than Pres and Instincts in their first 72 hours of availability combined. Of course we wish that Sprint would reveal the actual numbers, but we’ll cut them some slack. They’re in for a pretty tough week.

    Congrats Sprint!
I’m sure that the two EVO’s I purchased helped out!
Now if only Qik can get their act together. I’m using Fring in the meantime.

    • JB

How do I get Fring? I am Tech illiterate!

  • craphos

a customers natural response to a great phone, one of the best on the market

  • grrr

The evo is beastly. I got to see one today and it made my droid feel like a stick of gum.

  • xavier

i’ve been a loyal sprint cust. for over 12yrs. i stayed because of superior cust. service. congrats!!! BTW bought 3 Evo’s…congrats to HTC for making a GREAT phone.

  • T-MOBILE_REP

Bravo sprint…enjoy it while it lasts! once people starts realizing how bad your network is and how quickly WiMax becomes an ’82 Datsun you will lose all this precious record…….hahaha

    • sprintfan

hahahahahahahah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You’re joking, right? The day that Tmobile has half the coverage of sprint, pigs will be flying. Thanks, tmobile rep, You gave me quite a laugh!!!

    • Joe

I think Sprint already has more WiMax cover than T Mobile has for 3G LOL!!!!

i like HTC…..it is good in appearance

Ya Sprint best keep those evo numbers to themselves. The Evo will probably be outdone by iPhone reorders alone, then all of the people who camp out to get an iPhone will quadruple the Evo sales most likely. I personally liked the Palm Pre and I’m sad to see the Pre record being broken. I still have my sprint Palm Pre. And I’m either foxing to get the new iPhone (most likely to happen) or I might get a pixie or pre from at&t.

Since iPhone OS is only on one phone, to be fair, you must compare all Android sales across all hardware platforms. No wonder Jobs is having second thoughts about jumping ahead in line for that liver!

      • wekebu

Sounds like the Apple Comrade is running scared! The empire will crumble!

  • Rdx

I guess this sets the stage for Dell streak. I wonder until what limit can the screen size be stretched without making it a flop.

  • RogerRamjet

As a loyal Sprint customer of over a decade I was very pleased to read about the record sales. Their customer service is one of the main reasons I’ve stayed on but I’ve always felt that the other carriers were a step ahead when it came to hardware. That was until the past year. They now offer a long line of smartphones to suit everyone not to mention units that are feature and future packed. Congratulations Sprint!!

  • SOUTHERN MISS ELITE

I wish the EVO all the luck possible. Will I head over to Sprint for this phone? Nah. Verizon’s 3G network gives me the coverage I need on the highways and Sprint literally drops calls in my apartment, and I’m within a quick jog from their Hattiesburg, MS location! (Plus, 3G is not available down there, so 4G is of course out the question…)

Regardless, its obvious that for those who can afford it, this is going to hands down be their best choice and a hell of a choice at that!

  • Android is trash

To bad the phone sucks everybody is blinded by the looks but how does it perform?????and what about that battery???? Lmao evo yea right give it two weeks before people start taking them back

    • Ken

So far the battery is performing better than the battery in my 3GS, And that’s includes 4G data use…on the Evo, because the 3GS does not use 4G, nor will the next iPhone.

    • Joe

………………………. are you retarded or something?

  • Drew

Yeah it beat the sales of the pre ans instinct. That ain’t sayng much. Android is still a fragmented os with garbage support. All hype, little performance. And of course the battery life is better than a phone that came out last year. But look at the battery life of the nexus and incredible…. Horrible. The phone does the same thing that all the other high end android phones does with slightly better hardware specs. In a couple months htc will make something to put this to shame and it will be on verizon…. A way better network than bankruptcy-bound sprint.

    • wekebu

I find the term ‘fragmented os’ is used by apple lovers who are jealous of Androids continual improvements. Android keeps updating and improving it’s OS, and updating all but the first gen, 2 year old G1 phone. Not bad!

    • Joe

Verizon will have a downturn soon, people are already sick of their ridiculous pricing, mandatory data, and treating their long time customers like garbage. When they announce tiered data plans (LOL!) it will be all over, I mean the majority of their customers are only middle class. There is a point where these people are going to say “ok, that’s just too much money” and they’ll leave, and Verizon is already about there.

Plus their fake claims about their network are ridiculous. The map at my house is “all red, full coverage” AND shows broadband data but yet it drops calls all the time and data speeds are about that of dial up. If they are going to rob me $130+ per month for one phone it better at least live up to claims.

PLUS…. saying Sprint has bad coverage only means that you are knocking Verizon as well… if you leave Sprints network you get use Verizon’s garbage for less than they charge their own customers for, so therefore buying into the whole “Verizon is the best” crap just makes you about as intelligent as a football.

      • destardi

As a Verizon customer, I completely agree. I’ve very seriously considering leaving them and switching to Sprint…Verizon is too damn expensive.

  • Dave

BGR is so fucking gay all they do is talk shit about sprint!

Why do you think Verizon and at&t are so fuckin sweet and can do nothing wrong!?

Every article about sprint, or the evo has some underlining message about how they will fuck it up or how they still blow. Its ridiculous.

    • sean

i think iphonearena is even worse

      • MikeD

Do you guys just like to complain? Jeez.

  • Jarrett

They must of announced that info over WiFi because my EVO didn’t get news.

    • destardi

Naw, the blogger that sent the update through his iphone lost his signal so it never went through. He keeps trying, but he keeps getting pop-up notifications from his mommy before he can hit the send button.

  • Ghostnyc

Finally SPRINT comes thru with a winner. Im not a Sprint customer, but this is a good thing for all, why you ask…COMPETITION people.

VZW and AT&T were getting too comfortable swapping #1 & #2 spots, good to see Sprint finally get a worthy handset and flex some wimax muscle. If they can launch 4G in major cities ASAP…it will only get better.

  • MikeD

Well its a start to gaining ground. But breaking their own sales record is just that. Its their own record. How does it compare to Verizon and AT&T?

    • Whocares

MikeD what major sales record for Verizon would you be referring to? MotoDroid, BB Storm, HTC Incrediwhere?

Initial #’s are that Sprint and it’s partners may have sold 300K, in one day, w/ 100K new accounts. At the RadioShack I bought mine from, 40% of the EVO’s were transfer from At&t and Verizon.

  • Gary

I have the incredible and evo…I really like the evo but the 512mb internal memory is a turn off vs the incredible’s 8gb of i/m. testing Networks at different times, Sprint was just as fast as my verizon. however, majority of the time Verizon crushed it. So i have 30 does to make a decision…The evo is a beast tho

    • Yo

Evo has 1gb of internal memory plus the 8gb card.

      • Dave

Evo has 1GB ROM and 512 ram for internal memory.

  • remister

I remember when Sprint CEO was hating on Android. Now the tables has change, hasn’t it Mr Dan Hesse!
