Apple renames iPhone OS, iOS is the new moniker

iWonder if Apple will ever break away from its very sucessful, and very annoying, “i” naming convention. Well, for the time being it doesn’t look like it. Today, at WWDC, Apple announced that the iPhone OS will be renamed and rebranded as simply: iOS. The move makes sense, as the artist code formerly known as iPhone OS has expanded from the iPhone to iPods and iPads alike. The name isn’t the catchiest thing we’ve ever heard, but hey…it is what it is. Oh, one last thing…the iOS 4 Gold Master candidate is due out today.

    http://blogs.cisco.com/news/comments/cisco_and_apple_agreement_on_ios_trademark/

“Cisco has agreed to license the iOS trademark to Apple for use as the name of Apple’s operating system for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. The license is for use of the trademark only and not for any technology.”

Darn, and just when I thought I smelled a good lawsuit cookin’. But of course, Apple first pried the iPhone name away from Cisco. Why stop there? Grab their OS name too. Forget being original, just steal everybody else’s trademarks. It really kinda rubs a guy the wrong way when Apple accused Microsoft of being a copycat when they came up with “Windows XP” shortly after Apple first introduced “Mac OS X”, and then goes and pulls stunts like this. Cisco, shame on you for selling out to Apple. Oh, and just fyi for the whiners out there, I would be blasting Microsoft or Google just as badly if they had done the same thing.

Apple makes smartphones for beginners. Not many experienced users chose Apple. They chose the versatile Android, unless they are tech geeks that have drank too much of Apples Kool-Aid and just have to have one just because. I bet most of those types have more than just an iPhone and switch phones often. I’m sick of Apple pretending that they created MMS, copy/paste, video recording, folders, multitasking and Video Calling. It’s pathetic. They do make it easy for a noob to understand, but that’s it.

Not many choose Android if they want more than hardware. You don’t have the software to say what you’re saying. Show me some software that is fun to use and usable. Games, productivity apps, the best are on iPhone, not Android. In due time you may catch up, but for now Android software is subpar.

I am running a Moto Droid. There are many apps,

Google Skymap and Google Voice come to mind which as I understand are NOT available on the Apple. I use Linux as a desktop. I like the fact that the Android is built on the idea of openness. Apple is a great solution, as Nico said for noobs. As for me and countless others, the Android platform is far better. The only reason Apple has more apps is that it has been mainstream a lot longer. But as always, apple lock their platform in and eventually, the loose market share. The only reason Apple is where they are today in regards to their OS, is because of this fear that people have towards Linux. I will put my Fedora 12 64 against a MAC any day of the week.

There are many other apps that are extremely useful and fun. Just my $0.02
