Say hello to the Samsung Galaxy Tab

Rumor

samsung-galaxy-tab

No, you’re eyes are not deceiving you — that is indeed one giant, tablet-ized version of the Samsung Galaxy S your weary eyes are peepin’. Posted by the official Twitter page for Samsung South Africa, the tablet was referred to as the “Galaxy Tab”. Right now all we know is that the thing runs Android with TouchWiz UI, operates on 3G networks, has a front-facing camera and 3.5mm headphone jack. The presence of a “Phone” icon also suggests that the Galaxy tab will also be able to place calls, although it it not clear yet if a headset — Bluetooth or otherwise — will be required. A later tweet from Samsung South Africa also claimed that “this particular one is a 7″ model and has a high-res TFT screen.” This of course makes sense considering that such a large AMOLED display would be incredibly expensive to produce and sell and that there is currently a shortage of the such displays. Then again, there were those S-Pad rumors floating around a few months ago. Would it be wrong for us to read a lot into the “this particular one” and assume that there are more coming, perhaps ones with nicer displays?

Wow, looks like a gPad has entered the ring!

    • Matt

Looks like another company that has no idea what to do in response to the iPad. They don’t want to be left out so they are scaling up their phone.

      • doublejizzle

I see…..so is an iPad not a scaled up iPhone/iPod touch. So what’s good for the goose is not good for the gander? Competition breeds innovation.

      • Jarrett

        @ doublejizzle,

Actually, competition generally breeds imitation. Desire and focus are more prone to creat innovation. You have seen all the candy bar phones with round corners and chrome encased. You have seen the screens littered with icons. Innovation is a phrase that gets thrown around way to much. There has been far more imitation going on in the last three years than innovation.

      • mr doo doo sniffer

err he’s gotta good point there Matty boy. Any response to that?

      • Matt

Apple took a UI that is being used by close to 100 million people and put it on something tablet sized, almost the opposite of Windows being shrunken for phones. Samsung is literally just making a large phone. There seems to be no thought about how someone would use it in their life. It’s a very me-too product and it surprises me that so many tech-savy people are saying this is adding to innovation.

      • MikeD

Actually, The iPhone is actually a scaled down iPad. iPhone was released first for strategic reasons.

I see nothing wrong with what Samsung is doing. The much much larger screen affords you to many tasks more comfortably than on a 3 or 4 inch screen.

      • Matt

That’s not true. They started working on a screen and user interactions with a tablet first, but iPhone OS was developed for the iPhone first.

      • GmanB

According to Steve Jobs, the iPad was actually created before the iPhone. The iPhone is simply a scaled down version of the iPad, but nice try. http://hothardware.com/News/Steve-Jobs-The-iPhone-Was-Born-From-The-iPad-Not-ViceVersa/

    “YOU’RE EYES”! #grammarfail

    • GrammarCheckChecker

Actually it was “you’re eyes”. They didn’t have any of it capitalized. Great thing about a free society anyone gets to be a critic. I love this world.

      • Mrwirez

“No, you’re eyes are not deceiving you — that is indeed”… WRONG!

You’re=You are.. “You ARE eyes are not deceiving you” is incorrect. Come on guy’s..

      • Jarrett

        @ Mrwirez,

If you are answering the post I think you are answering, you might want to read the entire post. I think the person agrees that as wrote it is wrong. The person is pointing out the other person using ALL CAPS in pointing it out as retarded. I could be wrong though.

      • StevenHamburg

nah i think you got it spot on. but since it is very difficult to use accents and emotion in online conversations, their corrections might pass as mistakes as well.

the same goes for mrwirez’s comment. he might have known what they meant, but decided to include a remark with sarcastic intent which went underneath everyone’s radar.

then again, the same goes for your comment. you might have noticed mrwirez’s sarcasm, and decided to play on that, perpetuating the wheel of sarcasm.

now i’ll leave it to you to figure out my intent with this post…

You know what is coming now right? We will have lines of people forming all waiting for hours and some for days just to be the first to own this Android device. Remember the lines outside all of the stores for the G1? MyTouch 3G? The DROID? How about the Nexus One, don’t tell me you don’t remember seeing the news stories of people lining up outside stores to buy the Nexus One? Another single Android device that will easily sell 10 million units this year alone.

    • JJ

Oh, I get it! Because there are no lines for Androids is what you’re saying. And you’re suggesting why would anyone want to buy a product unless you’re accompanied by thousands of silly fanatics. Good one.

Yet another reason not to buy an Apple product. Can you imagine the horror of standing in line for hours with hundreds of Apple dorks foaming at the mouth? (the foam being being curdled latttes)

I know for you it’s a pilgrimage, not a horror. But some of us have common sense.

      • GrammarCheckChecker

        @ JJ,

As much as standing in line may or may not be fun. I prefer instant gratification. I wait in line never unless it is the grocery store. Going out to dinner, reservation. Buying electronic gear, walk-in and purchase or order online. I really don’t have the time to wait and won’t make the time to wait. I don’t buy things without using them first as a lot of you exclaim you will do (on all platforms). What three people in this thread alone say they can’t wait to get it. If it is an Apple user saying this about an unreleased product they are a fanatic. So, let’s not be hypocritical, if you are suggesting you are buying this product without it even being released you are in fact a moron.

      • JJ

Uh.. no. I actually won’t be buying it. I was responding to Jarrett who was suggesting that all things Android are fail because there aren’t thousands of fanatics lining up for hours. Simple as that.

      • Jarrett

        @ JJ,

In all honesty I was merely pointing out how fanatical Android Fans (not necessarily users) are becoming. We all (myself included) make fun of anyone who says they are buying a product when it isn’t even released yet.
People, get a grip and quit acting like these products are your children. You people remind me of the kids on the B teams in school. They think there children are the same caliber athletes. They are mistaken and you are as well. We all have a place in this world. Some of us are in 1st place and the rest of you are not. It is what it is.

Now, just laugh a little. No one dies with dignity but we surely can all choose to act with dignity throughout our lives.

      • JJ

        @Jarrett
Well that was random. Not sure how/where I fit into your argument there (I think maybe you’re seeing things). But OK.

      • Jarrett

        @ JJ,

Damn, a guy can’t even be humorous anymore. Fandroids remind me more and more everyday like the Amiga crowd.
Use what you use because you like it, not because you don’t like something else. Now, go flash a ROM while your mom is upstairs striping your cupcakes.

      • JJ

You’re just trolling. You can’t back out now claiming ‘humor’.

      • Jarrett

        @ JJ,

Actually, being that I was born free (william wallace said so) I can generally do anything I want. Happens to be that is one of the things that make life great.

  • warhed

    I just wetted my pants!

  • droid

    Sorry… Ugly

    • Jarrett

How dare you say that you feel like this product is ugly. You just can’t say that about an Android product.

  • DJ Megatron

So this is their answer to the Dell Streak?

    • Jarrett

      @ DJ,

That was clever, +1 for you.

      • rex

how many more times will you post another comment to this article? you’re really racking up the points.

  • Norm

I still prefer the iPad. I doubt anyone will come up with something as well put together. More than 5 different companies using the same OS still can’t beat the iphone. I guess I can only dream.

    • Jarrett

      @ Norm,

You came back, thank you for reconsidering.

      • MikeD

That’s not norm. He has never said a positive thing about apple. I call fake!

      • MikeD

Ahem. The fake version again. Seriously BGR please add some security to your comments. It may be a slight inconvenience but these Ghost writings need to come to an end.

Hello BGR Mod? are you paying attention. I did not write this post

That is not of my doing. Its the third time this month. Add a login feature please.

be quiet you pansy. and stop stealing my name.

  • Blue-what?

Lol….its very funny when Apple fan boys see comments being slammed back in their faces by Fandroids. It is sad that Apple ain’t the center of the universe anymore….but anyway, yall still got iPhone 4.0 coming out…or rather iPhone 3GS + Multitasking……I guess that is revolutionary enuff……let me stop here before Old Man Steve slaps me with a law suit for using his “patented” word ‘Apple’………..lol…wankers.

  • helebek

Apple produces quality products with very nice hardware-software integration. They innovated the eye candy, but not necessarily the technology/hardware behind it. Just so you know, tablets (like iPad, check archos) and smartphones existed waaay before apple produced those things. Well, as Vic said in Google IO, I am not ready for one man, one company, one product and a draconian future :D .

Training? We don’t need any stinkin’ training! We have iPads which my five year old can use – out of the box.

  • James

Well…. i was just looking around this website and i spotted this news feed. I decided to read the comments and i am a little bit shocked as to how much slagging there is between apple and android. I myself own an Android device, i love it, i work for a carrier and i have also tinkered with the iPhone. The iPhone is good, its slick and fast, the Android is getting faster and is currently ahead (until the 4G is released, which i believe will only level the playing field). Both companies have their advantages, i personally will not be buying an iPad or a tablet as i dont have the need for one and until it becomes something that is embedded into society and businesses such as mobile phones or netbooks then i shall not buying.

I will say this though, judging from what i have seen from the Galaxy, if the Tablet is anything like it then its going to be awesome.

    “Awesome,” overused word.

Is is just me or almost every new device is an Android?

  • drew dogg

Give me a DROID tablet pls VZ….

  • The Punvert

“Is that a Tablet in your pocket…?”

There’s a form factor problem here. Either it’s a viewing/interactive device, or it’s a phone. Anything in the middle of those two sizes will go the way of the portable DVD player, AT BEST.

Unless we see the resurgence of the “Man Purse” among geeks, there is no early adoption market.

  • StevenHamburg

Sure we don’t know enough about this product yet to make it a win or a loss. Stuff that would really come into play is battery life and speed. But, what do we already know that separates this from the beast (known as iPad)?
    - Front facing camera.
    - Ability to make phone calls.

Say what you want, but those features are a +2 for Samsung in my book.

  • wekebu

I’d be interested to know if this has a Super AMOLED screen? I’m loving that this and the Streak have phones, not VOIP, but phones. I use a headset now, and having that large of a screen is great with me.
Now when will jean/pant mfg start making pants with larger pockets so we can get past this, “it has to fit in a pocket” sized phone. I’ll just stick it in my purse, thank you.

  • Elves

Children. There have been tablet computers for years. There has even been tablet editions of Windows (R).

Affordable solid state memory and power efficient electronics brings the tablet to the consumer masses of the internet.

Apple did the UI best, is all.

Us producer elite of the internet still need our keyboards, at the moment.

  • ViniD

Looks like its got a front facing camera

  • Lhung

    7″ screen?

Watch this, it won’t compete with anything.

After a few months sales will show they needed to release a larger screen.
