Root for the EVO 4G released

Software

evo-4g-root

With one day to go before it hits stores shelves, the much talked about root for the HTC EVO 4G has been released to the public. All of the files needed to get the job done, along with a detailed tutorial, have been posted to the xda-developers forum, and by all accounts this works pretty darn well. Anyone planning to bring a laptop when you go shopping for your EVO? Just imagine the nerd cred you’d get for rooting your phone while walking out of the store!

I want to know if this will soon lead to the ability to bypass Sprint’s $30/mo charge for the wifi hotspot feature.

    • Marc

I believe that the answer to that is yes, it will be able to.

    SPRINT FTW

Too little, too late for Sprint.

    • ChocoTaco

Yes, because Sprint obviously already went bankrupt and no longer exists as a company. Oh, right, they’re still fully operational and have enough cash on hand to lose money for years in a row before they’d be forced to close up shop, leaving them ample time and opportunity to become profitable. I hate trolls.

    • Uhhhh

      I think you mean tmobile…

Evo vs MyTouch Slide? Hmmmm.. is it worth the extra $20? gosh, it’s such a hard decision.

  • Teksu

    Wow, that’s Incredible!…

  • Tdot34

Sweet the 38 people in the world that actually do this to their phone will be stoked!

There are quite a lot more than 38. Without a doubt, Android has the highest number of rooted devices per unit sold compared to other mainstream mobile operating systems. Root is such a wonderful (and powerful) thing.

  • charlesfro

for someone who doesn’t foresee himself tweaking ROMs any time soon, is there much of a point in doing this? i realize it may allow for hotspot capability, but i’ll be happy using an app to tether to a single device. any other amazing benefits for a tech-savvy, tech-passionate, but l337-skilz-lacking future EVO owner?

  • Frank

Great! Since Google locks down Android so much?

The ‘root’ really isn’t for Android, but rather for the Sprint/HTC device. Rooting allows you to flash new versions of Android to your phone which were previously not allowed due to carrier (and sometimes manufacturer) restrictions.

  • StevenHamburg

well, with this phone i doubt most people will actually need root. what with tethering already enabled, customization and multi-tasking already part of the OS, saving apps to SD card integrated into 2.2, and barely any noticeable underclock.

rooting will just be for the aforementioned 38 people that want to be the king geek of their domains.

    • mezmryz03

Tethering and Hotspot functionality are enabled but pricey, it is customizable to a good degree, but not at the ROM level, and all 2.2 features won’t be seen for some time without a root. Alot of great reasons to detach yourself from Sprint and HTC restrictions.

Um, considering that droidforums has over 74,000 members (and that’s only one of the various Android forums), I quite sure that there are at leats a few more people than 38 who would like to root their devices.

Thanks BGR. I’m a nerd for rooting my phone. So the battery pull on a BB is so cool right ?

  • 3 Phones Jugglin

Hate to burst Cheap peoples parade….but Sprint is Aware of the HotSpot bypass so enjoy it….for a Month.

    • Yvezzx

      @ Mac Man

Actually on a rooted froyo evo they would not be able to detect this, Mr. “I’m so rich” guy. It’s not the same as sprint mobile hotspot, plus there’s other tethering apps for a rooted anroid.

    • http://www.YouSaidWhat.net MikeyRoksChicago

You are a fool. Sprint can not control 3rd party apps such as Wifi-Tether. Only thing that they can possibly do is try and block the port, but doing so would disrupt data for the entire network.

      • 3 Phones Jugglin

I guess i never read the Part Where Android Developers stated during the FroYo release that 3rd party tethering would still be at the Carriers Discretion…..Its only $30…Really. If thats too rich for your blood….then i guess a Date at Fridays with your woman once a month is too much also….Watch your woman…

@chocotaco. LMAO, troll I am not sir, I hate all US carriers equally.

Why not figure out how to use the ‘reply’ button?

  • Scott

    @StevenHamburg,

The EVO isn’t launching with 2.2, it’s launching with 2.1. If it’s already rooted, I don’t think it will be long before 2.2 gets loaded on. I’m qurious to see how well it will run on the EVO’s hardware.

You don’t even need a laptop. Bring a memory card with the file on it and follow the instructions.
