doubleTwist launches Android media player, can sync iTunes metadata

doubleTwist media player

doubleTwist, a company whose vision is “to create a unifying media platform that connects consumers with all their media and all their devices,” has just released a full-featured media player for your Android device. Sporting a very appealing UI, the new media player allows users to sync and update media from the doubleTwist desktop client (available for both Mac and PC) directly to their Android device. A new, and fairly huge, feature that the doubleTwist Android player packs is the ability to recognize metadata from an iTunes library. This gives long time users of iTunes — who don’t fancy the iPhone — a choice of media players and a legitimate exit strategy from iTunes. Users can change media players — while retaining the ability to sync seamlessly with a mobile device — and not give up playlist, song rating, and play count data accumulated over days, months, or years of iTunes. Go ahead and give the new doubleTwist Android media player a shot, and do let us know what you think.

NOTE: you can also checkout Songbird as a cross-platform iTunes alternative.

very sexy UI. hopefully something like this will be released for Blackberry (hopefully around the time of OS6 so we won’t have to deal with every-other-minute lags).

Had to force close twice in the last 15 minutes. It also will not sync my itunes music to my droid…stating it was not bought on I-tuns plus. When I bought most of this music recently.

Not worth it. Looks nice though.

ok,….it apparently put the music on my droid….but it put all of it on my droid and took out 14Gb of memory. It wouldn’t let me select what i wanted to put on it.

      3 out of 5

Give SongBird a try, it seems to be more behaved. There is an add in called FoldSync that sync’s an Android.

Finally! A good looking Android music app! I’ll be putting this on my EVO in 11 hours and 53 minutes.

This IS a good looking music player – but you also have to check out Cubed. . . it’s hard to find in the market because it’s actually an exponent “3″ – but if you search the dev’s last name (Abrantes), prepare to enjoy a ‘better than coverflow’ album art UI!

I’ve been using this for a couple of days now. And I love it. I’ve migrated from iTunes and have no desire for the syncing abilities. But as a media player, I must say that this is great. Music works very well and is intuitive. And the video playback works well. The video player also loads faster when skipping around in large movies. All of my video and music players have now been deleted and replaced by this app. Get it while it’s free! Runs well on my HTC Eris.

      Haha…you have an Eris.

Tune sync does this very well already and you don’t have to have a separate player. It just syncs itunes playlists to your phone.

at least they put a good song/album on the preview. if u haven’t picked up the new Bonobo, check it out. very good album.

      very great album haha.

My only complaints are that it does not take advantage of the accelerometer function and switch to landscape mode when I mount my phone on my dash mount, the UI does not shrink to the lower 3rd so you can see the entire album cover art or movie in the background, and for some weird reason it sees the sound notifier for facebook and included it as a music track in my list of music.

I have lots and lots of music purchased from iTunes that was not purchased on iTunes Plus. In other words much of music has DRM. Will I be able to play the music on my new Droid X that I just ordered?

I love my iPod Touch and I’m guessing my Droid won’t be able to replace it. But I don’t love it enough to switch to AT&T. I’ll still use it for everything other than games and music.

It doesn’t sync play counts back to iTunes, so it’s pointless.

  • bb

Mikel Are you sure that doesn’t work i’m pretty sure that’s the whole point

  • Steven

bb, that feature to carry over ratings back to iTunes isn’t there (yet).

  • markilou

FAQs do specify the app doesn’t sync anything back into itunes so even if I do like the looks and features of Doubletwist as an Android player I’m still looking for a solution to rate my itunes music while on the move with Android. I’m surprised it doesn’t exist yet.

For whoever is using up 14 gigs above, you may want to check your library – especially if you’re using TuneSync. It’s likely that you are saving everything twice. If you are converting to doubletwist definitively, go in and delete the TuneSync folder from your library.
