BGR Throwback Thursday: TIMEX Beepware

Watches

Beepware

Oh, Motorola. You’ve now been featured in two out of two of our Throwback Thursdays. Who remembers the TIMEX Beepware watch? A collaboration with Motorola, the Beepware pager watch had a monochrome display and weighed around 1.3 ounces. But that’s boring, the insane part was that it was a full-fledged one-way pager with service through Skytel. You could get weather updates through it, people could email you, and you could of course make use of an operator dispatched page if you signed up for that service. The watch was first made available in 1997.

BGR Throwback Thursday is a weekly series covering our (and your) favorite gadgets of yesterday and yesteryear.

Whats up with those hairy arms?

  • Dream

Wow look how far we’ve come in tech

  • droid

    hairy ass arms -1

  • Nokia N900

Is this an advertisement for TIMEX or NAIR for Men?

  • Jon

There’s also the Beepwear Pro, the watch that combined the Beepwear with the Timex Datalink, another throwback technology.

    • ChedarDog

I had the Pro as well. I thought the Datalink sync, with the PC monitor screen flashing to transfer data to the device was pretty cool for back in the day.

  • tv

    Dude I had one!

  • StevenHamburg

the arm isn’t THAT hairy. i guess if you haven’t struck puberty yet it might seem so.

    • droid

Gotta keep that shit in check…. The ladies look for that clean cut– Im bodybuilding now so i have to keep that shit shaved.

      • James

And some ladies like their men to be real men, hair included.

      • droid

yeah those busted ass butch bitches… have fun with them haha… hillbillys

      • James

I just decided that you are ignorant.

      • droid

Im just bustin your balls man…. I really dont care– Just bored over here @ work ;)

      • James

I’m bored at work to! LOL! No worries, no offense taken!

      • droid

yeah were all bored ;) at work… its never fun!

      • Nokia N900

It’s 2010, the only women who like hairy men are from countries where the women are hairy also.

      • James

I will admit though, that in between look (what I am born with) is pretty whack.

      • Butter

i would rather have hairy arms then a penis that doesnt work.

    • droid

And dont defend this guy simply because you and I know that yours look like werewolf’s.

      • StevenHamburg

my arms are reasonably hairy. my legs, stomach, and nether regions are where it goes out of control.

in my short time on this earth, about 22 years, i have found that ladies that are into “making love” liked it more when i shaved (i swam competitively in high school).

but those crazy sorority girls, those with lots of experience as well as lots of diseases, damn they like us werewolves. gives me an excuse to howl ;-)

      • droid

hahaha this is a funny convo on BGR… def made my time easier @ work

  • UncleCarl

BGR should archive these somewhere because i cant find the last Throwbacks.

  • MikeD

I’m pretty sure they copied the iphone for this.

  • Mike2128

Some of you guys have a startling aversion to masculinity, eh?

  • Nate

Hey, I had one of those too. In fact I just ran accross it the other day while digging threw one of my junk drawers. Mine was one of the Blue Ones. Also came with a year of free service as I recall.

  • StevenGlansburg

Is that watch running Blackberry OS 5.0?

  • Joe

That looks more high tech than the pager I’m stuck with:
    http://www.unication.com/alpha_elite.html

It does alphanumeric ok, but the pager is HUGE. I used to have a much smaller Apolo 924, but no one uses pagers anymore, besides medical and utilities. It’s the most reliable form of notification, as cell service where I’m at can be questionable, in more rural areas.

  • J

How are you not able to spell it correctly when you went and found a photo with THE NAME ON IT?

  • StevenGlansburg

    Dude you need to shave

  • Voice of Reason

    I actually still have one….lol
I should put a battery in it and see if it still works. The service was through SkyTel… I would if they are still in business. They introduced the first 2 way pagers and email devices for RIM. We know how RIM turned out..

    • http://www.skytel.com Linda

Yes, SkyTel is still in business. We pioneered what we all know today as text messaging. And yes there still are some beepware watches still active on our network. In fact pilots seem to like them. We have a reseller that still sells lots of them.

  • droid

Lol that looks like blackberry o.s. 6

  • Chris

    Dear BGR

This article was fun to read. And since technology advances so fast my iPhone is actually considered outdated, I was thinking you could do a throwback article more than once per week.
    Please?

  • joey

I have the ironman model (moto and time). And it’s still active with a toll free number attached to it.

    Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone).

  • airmanrick

You should have went really retro and got one with the useless calculator attached.

  • maxpayne79

couldn’t john shave from the elbow down? ain’t no one wanna look at a forest up close…come on mang…:(

  • Ryan

As much as i hate to admit it, I had one.
