Linux, U.S., Intel, IBM, and research dominate supercomputing

June 2010 Supercomputing

The BBC has released an interesting analysis of the world’s supercomputing prowess based on the June 2010 TOP500 Supercomputing list. The report shows, unsurprisingly, that Linux is the king of supercomputing OS’ by an extremely large margin. Other fun facts from this months report include: the U.S. houses the most supercomputers (as well as the fastest), IBM is the largest manufacturer of supercomputing systems (HP is second), Intel is the most popular processor used in supercomputers (AMD is second), and the most widely used function for supercomputers is “research.” The fastest beast of the bunch, the Jaguar supercomputer, located in the U.S. at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has been clocked at 1.759 petaflops; only two other machines on the list are clocked using petaflops. We’ve got all BBC article, complete with infographics, all queued up for you.

I work for the Gov and I can confirm that our clusters almost all use Linux with just the business services and offices using Windows or OSX.

Imagine what a field day the Tea Party would have if Microsoft was the dominant OS. Talk about wasting the taxpayers moolah.

Makes sense. To me I would see Linux as being the most lightweight with fewest “security” features (i.e. those set in place to keep from getting to all system files and modifying anything at will).

The wife and I have been known to Petaflop now and again… :)

No surprise here. Linux is slowly but surely tipitoeing into our lives. Android will dominate the phone market in a year or two. It’s time laptops and desktops get in the game more widely, as Ubuntu for example is just as easy to use as Windows 7, even my girlfriend is running it on her desktop any she is not a computer geek…

Android is not linux. You can’t just hope into terminal on your P.O.S. droid.

      • the Goat

Yea because Linux = terminal interface.

Hmmm…what we need is to take one of those supercomputers, hook it up to the internet, turn it into a server, and have a huge massive battlefield with 5000+ players that would put MAG to shame.

………………….The nation that dominates Super Computing, owns the future………………………….

…………………………..And that nation is clearly America……………………………………….
