How To: Monitor your AT&T data usage

ATT-Data-Usage

We know that AT&T’s sudden announcement that it will put a halt to unlimited data put a lot of you into a tailspin this morning, but now that you’ve had some time to come to terms with the change (provided you didn’t immediately switch to another carrier), let’s take a moment to think about this. Many of you are going to grandfather your unlimited plan, but a lot will leave to either save a few bucks or to enable iPhone tethering. If you’re one of the later, how much data will you need? Unless you’re planning to tether, it’s pretty easy to predict how much data you’ll use in the future by looking into how much you’ve used in the past. And thankfully AT&T has a way for you to do this. Here’s how.

  • Hit up att.com and log into your online account
  • Click on My Accounts and select Bill & Payments
  • Click Billing Reports and select Data Trends
  • Hit Submit

From there, you’ll be able to get a detailed history of your wireless data usage. If you’re an iPhone user, you can simply grab AT&T’s myWireless Mobile app from the App Store. Unfortunately with the latter you’re restricted to viewing your usage from the current billing cycle, but maybe, just maybe, the app will get an update. How much data do you use a month?

Not only can I keep my unlimited Data plan, but I am going to add it to all of my lines, ( 10 total) before 6-7, so it is Grandfathered in. Please remember what ever data you use now is irrelevant!, as these networks get faster there will be more Data centric services and programs you will want to use. AT$T knows that and that is obviously why they have eliminated the unlimited Data option! If it ever becomes available again it will be a lot more then 30.00. Just wait till iPhone os 4.0 comes out and multitasking is enabled! Data will flow constantly! AT$T will be laughing all the way to the bank! And I am sure all the other Cellphone carriers will follow suit. Can you say Collusion?

Also, please remember, the only reason why AT$T is allowing everyone that has the Unlimited Data plan right now to keep it is because if they didn’t, everyone could opt our of their Contract!

Dial *DATA# (*3282#) on your phone to get your data usage

  • After Forever

This is a big huge pile of Bull $hit saying the average user consumes less than 200 MB per month of data.
I am that average user. And I am by far NOT a heavy hitter for downloading data. I on occasion stream a radio station and view a couple of web pages every days. My average data usage is 550 Mbytes a month.
Plus I am not an iPhone user……. and never will own any apple product.

So you will save 5$ a month. What are you complaining about?

      • After Forever

I am not really complaining. AT&T just makes a statement about average user’s data usage being less than 200Mbytes and the media just goes with it without asking for the information to backup this claim. IMHO it is not accurate.
Besides the fact, I do not like it when companies take steps backwards in what the consumer is offered.

They said that the 98% use less than 2 gb, not 200 mb. So all but 2% will save at least $5.

  • Mtpflyers

The fact that it has to be explained and a conversion formula has be given is proof enough that AT&T needs KEEP THE DAMN RATE USAGE THE SAME!!! Don’t tell me my limits in MB then give me my report in KB.. STUPID!!

There’s also a handy data calculator there. If you do nothing but stream music for 2.5 hours a day, every day (which is pretty reasonable since I usually do it 3-4 hours a day when I’m at work) that’s it, no email, no web browsing, no facebook posts…that’s over 2gb/month

My usage last month was 6.5gb
During Christmas it was 800mb (that was the lowest I could see)

Glad to have these numbers so I can explain it to AT&T when they call and want to know why my # was ported to Sprint
