We told those pesky grey marketers that they’d better get a move on if they were hoping to make a few quick bucks importing the Dell Streak into the U.S. Today at D8, Dell announced that it will be bringing its gargantuan 5″ Android smartphone/tablet to the U.S. on or around the end of July. At that time, $500 will get you unlocked Streak complete with a 5″ WVGA display, 5 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS, 16GB of internal memory, 7.2Mbps HSDPA, and 1GHz Snapdragon processor and Android 2.1. It will be available directly from dell.com

    pdadb.com’s February story reported frequencies for the Dell Streak to be ,”GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, UMTS850, UMTS1900, UMTS2100.”

    Wikipedia, today, sez T-Mobile uses frequencies, “850 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE (1G/2G), 1900 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE (1G/2G), 1700 MHz UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ (3G), 2100 MHz UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ (3G).”
So, the Streak should work everywhere that T-Mobile does business at 1G and 2G speeds, plus work at 3G speeds where T-Mobile has 2100 MHz spectrum and upgrades in place.

Wikipedia, today, sez AT&T uses frequencies, “850 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE (2G), 1900 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE (2G), 850 MHz UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ (3G), 1900 MHz UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ (3G). So, the Streak should work everywhere that AT&T Wireless does business at 1G and 2G speeds, plus work at 3G speeds where AT&T has 850 MHz and/or 1900 MHz spectrum and upgrades in place.

Damn it.. I LOVE my HD2 (yeah, I’m one of those sickos that likes WinMo), but this (depending on the reviews first though!) could draw me right back to Android. And heck, w/ my Google login, I could reinstall everything I had on the G1 here.

Actually, width don’t matter as much as thickness (ha…yeah, what she said… I know…). The HD2 is not at all clumsy because it’s thin. If the Streak can come close… it won’t be cumbersome at all.

All I know is the Dell Streak is thinner then the Evo 4G, so if the HD2 is the same thickness as Evo, then you are golden.

It will be released with Android 1.6 and well be upgraded to 2.2 in Q3 i believe.

    • Dragonbreath

call me a complete idiot if u like but if i get one now with the Android 1.6 will the upgrade be dowloadable or what? I’m debating over this or the blackberry bold for my phone upgrade this week.

      • richard

Yeah it will be an OTA update :-) the streak has the space to evolve.

      Close 2.1 for US, 2.2 3rd Qt !?!

If the Streak was on T-Mobile, who have unlimited data plans, I’d likely get it, but not AT&T since they no longer have unlimited data plans, and what data plans AT&T does have sound expensive if you’re just a moderately heavy user.

I think the Evo on Sprint is the best bang for your buck for large phones as of now.
