Just in time for the launch of the EVO 4G, Sprint and Clearwire today announced the launch of their 4G WiMAX network in Washington, D.C. and Kansas City. The D.C. portion of network extends rather deeply to neighboring communities and is capable of reaching some 1 million people. The two carriers also announced the strengthening of their network in Baltimore which now covers roughly 725 square miles and is capable of delivering high speed wireless data to roughly 1.7 million people. Clearwire is offering a promotion in Washington, Kansas City, and Baltimore in which new subscribers to its Clear service will receive a $50 service credit and have access to plans as low as $15 per month for the first two months.

    Where?

4G also now available in Harrisburg and York, PA.

    • js

Has anyone tried this in Harrisburg?

  • Andrew

Will this reach out into Northern Virginia Suburbs like Centreville?

    • John Thacker

Centreville is in the “we plan to get there over the next three months” area, not in what was turned on today.

The area turned on today was unofficially working for quite a while, according to reports.

Buried in there it says 31 Miles Max. Under ther Inherent Limitations Section. Granted, the signal quality drops at those distances.

    • The Masked One

31 miles max is for one sector. These companies did not turn on 1 sector, they turned on many. WiMAX is a cellular-like system, and I would expect that most of the sites have ranges of 1-5 km, with the coverage extended by adding sites.

You are certainly not an electrical engineer!!

  • Jeff

that only leaves 95% of us out in the cold. Thanks for the update! Go 4g lol .. Think ill wait

  • Eazail70x7

As a Baltimorian craving faster data speeds, all I can say is YES!

  • Gee

Yeah, more fake 4 g news from sprint. Why doesn’t the ITU put a stop this fake 4g shit.

    • Celz

If you want to be completely technical 4G doesn’t exist anywhere in the world outside of a lab. If you want to use a more general definition like the rest of the world and agree that OFDM is the 4th generation of wireless tech then that means the WiMax Sprint released is 4G..

Saying 4G is alot easier than saying a next generation OFDM standard that will soon be ratified 4G and is faster than 99 percent of all 3G and has more potential than 100 percent of all 3G..

All of the worlds current WiMax and LTE customers (since there is technically no 4G LTE available either) would more than likely rather the soon too be 4G tech be called 4G now instead of trying to have a part time sales person explain wireless standards that none of us on here even fully underatand..

      • John Thacker

Right, even the initial LTE isn’t officially “4G” by the ITU standards. LTE Advanced will be 4G, but then again so will be “WiMAX 2,” or 802.16m.

      Because 3.5G just sounds stupid

oooohhh yea…..Now all of central MD will Be Full of 4G Goodness….Continuous coverage down the 95 Corridor….2 Tears..

Sprint did not launch DC, only CLWR. Sprint and CLWR launched in KC.

  • MacMan

Can’t wait till friday. So I can stream porn on the evo at 4G speeds.

  • fanboyardee

When the heck will 4G launch in Miami?!?!?

    • UncleCarl

Such a huge market you think would have been some sort of priority. Sprint has 2 days before the EVO launches to get 4G up!!!

    • D King

Miami is on the roadmap for August this year

  • endless

been seeing 4G on and off in parts of KC for a few weeks.

it has definitely expanded… apparently a whole bunch more towers will go live in early july according to the clear folks…

  • No4G4U

I was in Laurel, MD and DC on May 17. I was using my Clear 4G card with ‘Perfect Signal’ in both locations!

  • BillF

Unfortunately, it doesn’t extend outside the beltway in DC. Clear wire will let you sign up for the on-the-go plan and not even clarify that. The coverage tool lets you believe it’s available in your area too.

  • NothinbutTru7h

Great!!! Now if Sprint would only expand their 3g coverage in the state of Louisiana. Seriously, look at the coverage map. It’s atrocious here.

    • garrett butcher

why bother it would take a Long time to recoup the money the vast majority of people that live in LA live neaN new Orleans or baton rouge Hell i had full 3g coverage in Zachary LA for the two months i lived there

  • FrankieFlo

Los Angeles needs some 4g luv asap … I want the best out of my EVO has anyone heard any 411 on soft dates for 4g or any other info for Los Angeles???

    • D King

LA will be rolled out this summer

  • Kevin Jones

Oh, but wait, it’s not really 4G! It’s just 3.25G with the capability of being upgraded to 4G!

    WOOHOO! GO FALSE ADVERTISING!

  • A Wire

Just got off an online chat with Sprint and the customer rep told me that DC does NOT yet have 4g. She didn’t even try to talk me out of it when I told her I had heard it had launched on June 1, and if she was sure there was no 4 g in dc, I would postpone buying until it launched, She repeated that it was only 3g here in DC. I’m not sure what’s going on, exactly, but I dont think they are ready to confirm that it’s up and running in Washington, DC yet, even if it is, or if the customer service people are the last to know? Seems odd, especially given the phone hype today with their new 4 g model. I was shopping for an overdrive, but 3 g was all she said was available here (downtown). .

    • RobertoChang

A Wire, I activated my HTC EVO yesterday monday afternoon, for my surprise later on, during the evening my friend and me, we both bought the EVO, got 4G signal, surprisingly and we have a strong signal, and we dont live in downtown DC. We live in the suburbs, I mean in northern virginia, in Vienna, VA, like 20 minutes by car from DC. So DC already has 4G, you should go and buy your EVO soon.

  • Pissed Evo Owner

I just got off of the phone with Sprint customer service after getting my Evo yesterday (6/11). I pre-ordered it after reading this original story, along with a few other sources. However, I was told by customer service rep that Washington, DC will be getting 4G service “soon”…

    Thanks bgr…

  • Sprint Overdrive in Arlington

NO 4G in Arlington, VA. I have sprint overdrive and have not gotten 4G.Only Slow 3G speeds:(

    • A Wire

thanks for these reports; I’ve been trying to find out if Overdrive would work for me, and the closest I’ve come is to find someone at work who has an Evo 4g phone. He’s getting spotty 4g reception (a few blocks from the Capitol), only 3g inside our building, and much better 4g signal midtown around Adams Morgan. Given these inconsistencies, I’m probably going to wait before signing a 2 yr contract – maybe try virginmobile wifi in the mean time, since they use Sprint’s 3g network, at least til they work out the coverage lapses. Please keep posting results, as it’s the only way we’ll know what’s up – customer service seems oblivious.
