Verizon to release two new Motorola Android handsets in July

Rumor

motorola-logo1

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Motorola and Verizon have signed off on an agreement which would see the nation’s largest carrier heavily showcase its upcoming line-up of Android smartphones. Going further, the WSJ alleges that July will see Motorola launch two new Android smartphones in conjunction with Big Red. Clearly one of the devices is going to be the Shadow, but the other is still quite the mystery. One major hurdle that Motorola faces when trying to make a name for itself as an Android powerhouse is that it does not control the rights to the Droid brand. Owned by Lucasfilm and under license to Verizon, the WSJ contends that Motorola is finding it very difficult to capitalize on the popularity of the Droid name as others such as HTC have also used the name. Regardless, the onus is on Motorola to again make a splash with yet another incredibly popular handset just as it did with the first Droid.

Looks like to me that Blackberry is taking a seat in the back of the bus at Verizon. Haven’t seen any new BB’s released on their network except the sub-par Curve 2.

    • The Late Ted Kennedy

MORE JUNK FOR USE ON THE OVER -PRICED OVER-RATED NETWORK IN AMERICA. SO MUCH TALK ON THIS WEBSITE ABOUT VERIZON MAKES YOU THINK IT WAS PURCHASE FROM BGR????? MAKES YOU WONDER?

      • Mr. Anderson

the only thing i’m wondering is why u are always yelling?

      • james

when you’re in a coffin and buried 6 feet under you have to yell so people can hear you.

      • Duke Nukem

        maybe he’s STEAMING MAD!!!! GRRR….
and he’s got a point. although I think BGR is biased mostly in favor of Apple and AT&T. BGR is also quick to point a finger, accuse, assume, and spin the facts and distort them into what they want them to look like before feeding it to the public. they’re can be as bad as the news channels.

ok, look.. Every carrier has it’s ups and downs. As far as Verizon goes, you have to give them this.. though they are the most expensive (AT&T is exactly the same) they have more customers, better coverage then ANY domestic carrier. this is undeniable. They also have the best smart phone line up of any wireless carrier. Oh yeah, and they’ve been branded as some of the best customer service for at least a decade. I’m sorry if Verizon pissed you off, or if you were dumb enough to piss them off… but as it stands Verizon is excellent in what they are now providing. 92 million people agree with me. so stop hating a good company. there really aren’t better ones around here.

The Shadows looks like it will be a worthy successor to the venerable Droid.

  • Robert S.

I wonder how many people will wish they hadn’t just bought the EVO on sprint, when they could have waited a month to get the Shadow on Verizon. Just curious to see if Verizon will officially announce it before the EVO’s June 4th debut.

    • SP

You wrote that like the Shadow destroys the EVO in specs. Nothing destroys the EVO in specs, though the Extreme is a monster as well. Galaxy S is a thing of beauty as well. Something great will always be surpassed in months, when it comes to the world of cellular technology. Even though you created that smug comment, iPhone 4G probably won’t compare to both, (spec wise), and still outsells both. It is what it is.

  • JayD

i cannot wait for the shadow. hot damn!

Motorola would never make a name for itself when all of their high end devices is going towards one company. It’s a stupid strategy. By August, Verizon will now have more Motorola devices than the other 3 carriers combined. HTC, RIM, Google, Samsung, and Windows Mobile would never do something like that. Palm regretting that now, though with the right devices, they should have initial Droid numbers.

Motorola Droid was a success, and the Droid Extreme/Droid 2 will both follow. It’s not going to matter when HTC, Samsung and the other manufacturers create a plethora of devices for every carrier, while Motorola caters to only one. Mark my words.

    • Mike2128

Not saying that Motorola and Apple are on the same level at this point, but Apple certainly has no qualms about giving its hardware to one carrier.

  • SP

“Motorola would never make a name for itself when all of their high end devices is going towards one company,” was towards Moto trying to make a name for themselves as a Android Powerhouse comment.

  • Walt

I hope that the mystery phone has a hard keyboard. This will probably be my last phone without a ridiculous ETF.

  • WoW

Man it just really bothers me when you can hear biased reporting just oozing from places like BGR and PhoneArena (PhoneArena more so).
“One major hurdle that Motorola faces when trying to make a name for itself as an Android powerhouse is that it does not control the rights to the Droid brand”
-not so sure Motorola is worried about making a name for itself in the Android market. VZW’s amazing marketing has convinced thousands that the only Android is the Droid and it is on Verizon. And I am pretty sure they have sold a few, think the numbers are over 4 million now!!

  • WoW

    Oh,
and if you really want to know what the second device is, just go to Howard Forums, they have real info there, in fact why am I even writing this, I’am out…

  • WoW

    SP,
    “Mark my words”

    lol
What a load of crap, like you know what you are talking about.
    One carrier,
Pretty sure the iPhone has done well with that. And there are other Moto Androids out there with other carriers, but VZW has almost 100k customers and the best network. AT&T is practically owned by Apple so they don’t get any real competition to the iPhone. So if you were a phone manufacturer, who would you side with? (Sprint, T-Mobile?..combined they dont have as many customers as VZW) Moto is actually playing it smart and riding the Droid wave.

    • SP

Motorola is not Apple, period. Motorola haven’t created anything that will match the hype for the iphone, because quite frankly, there won’t be anything to match that hype for years to come. Other carriers have Moto Androids but none of them are high end, while other phone manufacturers creating high end devices for, repeat after me, EVERYBODY. I’m on numerous carriers, and I wouldn’t sit here, and constantly state how Verizon is the greatest. All have their strengths and weaknesses, but there I go again acting like a mature adult. Pardon me.

      • Israel!

“Motorola is not Apple”? Ummmm who created the worlds first mobile phone?

  • http://www.sturgiswebservices.com/ webdevtj

i’ll wait for it if it has Froyo…

  • chingy

it’s all personal opinion; choose a phone you like and shut up. a new one will be out a couple months later, but as long as you’re happy who cares. i can’t wait till they start implanting computers into our heads, then i won’t need a phone; i’ll just blink twice to log on or something.

  • diar

The mystery phone better have a forward-facing camera, gigabytes of built-in memory, other goodies and be upgradeable to LTE or else the EVO is going to reign all summer.

  • Sonya

The phones are coming out in August, not July.

  • protgè

hoping that they feel as good as the incredible did. I swear I can no longer keep up with the market. It’s like trying to figure out which processor to get for my pc…there’s always something improved lying right around the corner.

  • supadave

    @israel!
    I know right.

Motorola has been holding it down in the communication industry since pagers were popping but no one gives them credit for that , people only remember the times when they fell off. People please don’t underestimate Moto they have shown again & again that they can perform under pressure & deliver an excellent device not to mention their antenna/signal quality has always

    • SP

It’s like you have to talk to people in here like they are 6 years old. First of all, I used to work for Motorola so I know what they have accomplished in the past, and what the company struggled with. Bringing up that they created the first ever mobile device is a great point, since that means that any current Motorola device will outsell Apple right? It’s common sense on what my point was, but it went over people heads. Things will not be the same forever but as of right now, there is no Motorola device that will surpass a Apple product in hype.

Disclaimer: Besides a MacBook that’s collecting dust, I’ve never used a Apple Iphone in my life. I’m just a realist.

  • supadave

    Been spot on for me

  • lisa
