Rumor: Bing to be default search provider in iPhone OS 4?

Bing Search iPhone

TechCrunch is citing a “reliable source” who claims that Bing will be getting the nod as iPhone OS 4′s default search engine once the finalized code is pushed out to the masses. Search rival Google has been the default iPhone search provider since its inception in 2006; an honor for which Google allegedly pays close to $100 million a year. Mobile search is becoming huge business and as the Android platform juggernaut continues to chug along — with Google search in tow — alternate search providers like Microsoft and Yahoo! are looking for mobile delivery vehicles. What do you think iPhone owners? Loyal to Google or will you give Bing a shot?

I am willing to give Bing a shot, if it’s defaulted. I am all for quick, rich search results. Don’t care what company brings it.

I don’t care if Bing is the default as long as I can switch it to Google. Why are there other search engines, by the way?

Because competition is good? Right? Or do you think there should only be one search engine? ;-)

The first thing I would do is to switch it back to Google. And write an angry mail to Steve.
What is wrong with “Goopple”? Do you remember the Macworld 2007 when the iPhone was introduced?
Eric Schmidt and Steve Jobs almost kissed each other on stage! And now?

I think you should all be forced to use Lycos.

    • MikeD

Wow Lycos is still going? Totally forgot about em. Thanks for the remind.

I’ve already tried Bing. I’ll take google on my iWhatever please. Apple can default to any search they want, as long as I can change it to whatever I want.

thanks to fucking verizon this happened to me like 2 weeks after I bought my storm2. talk about pissed. and its not like i could choose either. we all (vzw blackberry owners) went from the option of google, livesearch, wikipedia, and dictionary.com to search natively from the bb browser to being forced to use bing. and only bing. I would love a sweet android phone like the evo 4g on verizon if i trusted android to work really well/smoothly (keeping fingers crossed for froyo) and this new iphone is the first time ive even considered an iphone, but things like this just really piss me off. I cant stand it and i wish android would be as stable and reliable as blackberry but until then im sticking to blackberry and holding out for a sweet new cdma berry with 6.0

I’ve been using Bing the last several months and I quite like the look and feel. In fact, I have read (I think on BGR!), that the next refresh of Google is going to make it look a lot like Bing. In terms of search results, I do agree with some comments that Google seems a bit more accurate at times. This should improve though as MS continues to plow money into their search areas. In the end, choice and flexibility is what matters. You can default to any search provider you want, doesn’t really matter to me as long as we can change to whoever we want.

This is a credible rumor as 100Mil is peanuts to Apple, especially as Google has come to compete in a lot of spaces with Apple. They are probably kicking themselves for having Eric Schmidt on their Board for so long!

I’ve tried Bing several times in the past, and it just isn’t as good, pure and simple. Try searching for anything obscure and the accuracy crashes through the floor. Same with non-English searches.

Bing is simply missing results compared to Google. If I had a nickel for every time Google showed something I wanted as the first result and Bing didn’t show it at all, I’d be rich.

Also, what kind of a name is Bing, anyway? It reminds me of the sound effect from that annoying Crazy Frog song in the early 2000s.
