AT&T-bound and Android 2.1-powered Samsung i897 breaks cover

Rumor

samsung-i897-att

Have you spent countless nights wishing that AT&T would introduce a respectable Android smartphone into its product offerings? Well, to you we say meet the Samsung i897 — leaked for your viewing pleasure by the folks at AndroidGuys. Closely resembling the Samsung Galaxy S, the i897 is said to come with a 4″ AMOLED touchscreen display, 5 megapixel camera and a stock version of Android 2.1. Regrettably there’s no definitive word on the clock speed of the processor, but if we were degenerate gamblers (and we are), we’d wager it to be 1GHz affair.Read

wow right next to a plastic wraper. this means something!

  • mommysays

    Hell yea.

There are all sorts of questions I want to ask now (as an AT&T customer looking for a decent Android handset). I hope it comes with the SuperAMOLED display, the Hummingbird processor, 720p vid, 512mb RAM, the list goes on and on. If it doesn’t, then it’ll be a letdown. Also, are they going to support it or are we going to get the Samsung shaft like those poor folks on T-Mobile?

    • Jnl813

Honestly… you cannot go wrong with the Nexus, and its available for At&t, yes you might have to pay a little more but then again its worth it, you will always get the updates.

And the value on this phone has not dropped even 6 months later, just look on Craiglist.

      • Kevin

A little more? C’mon – you could buy a decent laptop for what you could buy a nexus one for when it’s not subsidized since we’re on AT&T. Besides, isn’t the Nexus One about to be updated – who knows how much the next version will cost.

I’d hate to buy a Nexus One only to found out it’s been put to pasture by a new version.

      • Drybones5

Its a software update. It costs NOTHING.

There isn’t any rumors of a new Google Phone coming out

    • McHale

I would like to ask if they were going to screw it up with bloatware, removal of side loading, and generally bad support. And to be honest, I’m actually surprised that it’s not shipping with Android 1.0 or 1.5 on it,

    • wekebu

Yes! It’s the Super AMOLED that attracts me also. I’ve seen video of the Super next to a non Super and hands down, it’s the selling point for me.

  • Boba Fat

    androidguys logo kicks ass…

  • TONY

But, I don’t like Samsung. Why can’t we get Moto or Dell any faster? Shit, even HTC…but Samsung. I am not too pleased with their previous products of yester years. I used to own a Samsung A900 flip phone from Sprint. In the 18 months I had that POS, not ONCE was there EVER an OS update. NOT ONCE! I know the flip phone thing is somewhat irrelevant, but it just irks me that Samsung, out of all other major phone makers, are the shittiest of them all to bring out phones that never get support. Just my two cents.

    • Chris13

      “even HTC”. LMAO.

HTC > Moto, Palm, Dell… ANY DAY OF THE YEAR SON.

      • TONY

I agree. lmao. I was just throwing names out there in my rant.

      • StevenGlansburg

HTC phones don’t seem to get good reception though.. at least compared to Motorolas

    • Jnl813

I agree Tony, Samsung is not the best quality, i mean if they were to take away the TouchWiz then maybe. BUt nope. I am sticking with HTC- they were the first for Android, and still the BEST for Android.

      • Kevin

I had a Samsung Eternity and it was pretty cool for what it did. Never had any problems with it. Right now i have a Blackberry 8520 with a 320X240 screen and am looking at the Super OLED screen on this puppy and salivating.

Hasn’t the Super Galaxy S received good reviews? Why wouldn’t this have received at least as good reviews, if not better? Just hoping it is coming soon.

  • Anthony

does it come with the plastic wrap?

  • BB9700

Screw Dell, Screw Moto, Screw Samsung. Not to sound like a little bitch, but I want HTC Sense UI on an Android AT&T Phone. Come on Desire!!!

  • Chris13

Looks like the 4inch screen form factor is the new “it”. HD2, EVO, Moto… now Samsung.

I wonder how much ‘size matters’… some ‘average consumers’ may see the iPhone as ‘lesser’ if all these bigger phones keep coming out.

I’m not saying I believe that, or that any of us would, all I’m saying is perception means everything when selling to the consumer.

    • TONY

I know right! And people whining all the way to the Whine Bank over the BlackBerry Bold 9000 with its size. Now, it’s all about size.

  • Dan

As an AT&T customer, I am happy that we are getting some decent android phone. Not sure about Samsung. Is that a proprietary charging port? Why can’t they use a standard mini or micro usb?

They need to bring the Desire. Or maybe I just have to buy a Nexus One and be done with it. :-(

    • Topher86

All the ports are standard, 3.5mm headphone jack, and micro usb.

My gripe is I have yet to hear anything about an LED flash, and the Galaxy S doesn’t have one. Plus, seeing how Sammy isn’t fond of updates, I’m gonna have to see how the phone runs, and how eeger Samsung is on pushing out Froyo

  • Bradley

android 2.1 on at&t and iphone OS4. which do you think will top the summer sale charts

    • TONY

Baha, AT&T won’t advertise this. They barely advertised the Nokia E71 when it came out. They don’t care.

      • Boba Fat

Yup, it’s all iPhone this, iPhone that…blah blah…

    • Tohn

      froyo 2.2 with own os4!!!

  • Tar Tar

After that Behold II fiasco, I will never purchase a Samsung smartphone…EVER.

  • http://cyberbulletin.wordpress.com/ Jouten

After the Samsung Eternity experience, I am NEVER EVER going to buy another Samsung phone again!

  • Kevin

Haven’t seen anything about a proposed release timeframe. Anyone? Anyone?

  • btdown

    sorry…no qwerty,no buyee.
Im not buying anymore devices without a full phyical qwerty keyboard, Touchscreen is ok but it must have a physical qwerty and at least a 4.3″ screen,

  • ej22

how is the hummingbird compared to snapdragon? and anyone know whens the suspected release date?

  • Shawn

This thing will never get a software update, even if it’s buggy!

  • chellykay

I would be so excited if this phone wasn’t samsung. I love htc and Im dying for them to make a bad ass android phone for att!

  • Electrofreak

The source actually theorizes that the device uses a Snapdragon, which is pretty ridiculous, and IMO shows that any information they’re “leaking” to us.

Samsung’s own 1 GHz Hummingbird CPU in the (suspiciously similarly-specced) Samsung Galaxy S can match the Snapdragon in CPU speed, and supposedly best it significantly in terms of GPU performance (if we’re to believe Samsung’s 90 Mt/s claim).

The only reason Samsung might use a Snapdragon is if it was a 1.3 GHz 45 nm QSD8650A or dual-core QSD8672, but it’s a little early for that, particularly if they are trying to market Hummingbird.

    • Electrofreak

*Shows any information they’re “leaking” to us should be taken with a heavy dose of salt.

My arm for an edit button.

  • Typenow

Ooooo. Its covered in plastic and is MICROWAVEABLE!!! OMGGGZ!!!!

  • OH HARRO

If only there was somehow a way to port HTC’s Sense UI to this phone…
