Rumor: Apple TV refresh coming, to resemble an iPhone?

General

Engadget has just received some fairly shocking intel on what exactly the next revision of the Apple TV will entail. According to Eng, the next Apple TV will resemble, both in form and specs, the fourth generation iPhone. An iPhone-like box (minus the screen) the Apple TV will run the iPhone OS, have a price point of $99, and have very few ports (possibly just power and HDMI-out). The unit will output video at a full 1080p, have 16 GB of storage, and an A4 CPU, again very similar to the fourth generation iPhone. The post goes on to say that WWDC attendants will not see the unveiling of the new device, as the project is still underway; an estimated release date is unknown. Engadget’s source does say that the product refresh had been planned for sometime and was not something that was spurred by a competitor’s product(s) *cough* Google TV *cough*.

“An iPhone-like box (minus the screen)”…. so it will be… like a box…? Shocking! ;-)

exactly. hmmm, where did i put the apple tv? there it is, under the cheezits. no, wait, that’s the remote … or is it?

an A4 cpu? Another kick to Intel’s groin. First they cut intel graphics chip on macbook and now this.

What if our TV’s don’t have built in accelerometers??

  • robojerk

Knowing Apple it will just be a launchpad for iTunes for our TV’s. Similar to what AppleTV currently is.

This new “iPhone like box” needs to at least match Google’s offering and will Apple partner with companies to get it in TV’s and disc players?

GoogleTV has a full web browser, Boxee is porting their app for it (can they do that for iPhone OS or a complete rewrite would be needed), Flash support. I can see GoogleTV being on a lot of devices by 2013. Inside TVs, disc players, sound systems, Wii (if ported to PPC)

it doesn’t need a full web browser. this is so business people can take their pr0n on business trips and plug it into the hotel TV and not have the charges come out on their expense accounts

Yeah… cause that’s the first thing we all need on the tv. I sit down to watch a movie and I go straight for the web browser. In fact, they should just get rid of the ability to watch movies all together. I’m sure I can just search around online for a while and find some flash-based website where I can watch it in a small frame within the page.

Google is barking up the wrong tree.

And if this is going to be based on an iOS type infrastructure then it’ll likely support all manner of apps that can extend it’s function in a million different ways.

But the bottom line is that the main feature is to get to your movies, tv-shows, and maybe on occasion your music.

And if history is any indication… google will build a more feature filled (always beta… because it’s ok to make crap when it’s beta) option that will have no polish and will be painful to use by anyone except people like you who will champion it’s myriad of useless features that (magically) made apple’s device “useless” except that even if they were there… you would still hate it.

Meanwhile Apple’s will have fewer, better features that will become more plentiful and refined over time.

my GoogleTV is so much better than anything Apple can come up with. I hate Apple.

Geez… does Apple release anything these days that isn’t connected to the iPhone in some way?

    • Billium

      Yeah it’s called the Mac.

      • dponinski

Even the Mac is connected to the iPhone, lol. I’m kinda excited to see what they do with this. I would much rather have Apple in my living room than Google.

    • red014

I bet the Core i7 MacBook Pro would FLY with iPhone OS on it.

Should be interesting to see how they turn my TV into a touch screen. Maybe they should use Flash :-)

  • MikeD

I’m guessing that they mean that the Apple TV will be running Apps, and stuff. Thus the iPhone-esque experience.

They don’t have to physically change the hardware dramatically. Its the OS thats probably going to be the biggest change.

Fuck Apple & their Apple TV. Good luck getting IFC wth that.

    Downrank Away.

  • Alexpeegs

A little on this now apple. Google TV FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • StevenHamburg

they might make that the box is a touch pad device. almost like that magic mouse thing.

  • rmcgoff

16GB of storage? Somebody needs to tell Steve Jobs that it isn’t 1998 anymore.

  • DJ Megatron

I like my iphone but does anyone even have Apple TV? What the hell does it even do?

  • David

Keep in mind people, 100 dollars, A4 + some flash memory, what else do you expect them to put in there and still generate a profit? I mean thankfully they’re cutting out the screen and all that, but really,

  • jw

Why don’t they just put an HDMI port on iPhone/ iTouch/ or iPad? Presumably so you waste more of your #s on more of their gadgets.

No thanks, I will just use the many different options ( andriod based phones, tablets, or MS based netbooks, or gaming devices) that don’t force me to hand over more money for each incremental use (or that force me to look at SJ censored content or that make me send them back to change the battery)

  • iamajim

Just exactly how is this different/better than say the Boxee? Why would I pay for this as opposed to other options?

  • Ca$shCow

I love my AppleTV… here’s a hint. Get ATVflash and a couple of 1TB HDDs… use XBMC and you will be happy. If they truly drop the USB port then it’s a stupid move. And no mention of of the network connectivity? Try streaming 1080p over WiFi… good luck.

Everything points to the move toward the Mac Mini becoming Apple’s HTPC solution if they truly add an HDMI port to it so we’ll have to see…
