Yahoo-Nokia

Nokia and Yahoo! have announced the formation of a strategic partnership — on a global scale — that will, “leverage each others’ strengths in e-mail, instant messaging and maps and navigation services, to provide consumers with access to world-class experiences on both PC and mobile devices.” The newly formed alliance will work to meld the strengths of each company:

  • Nokia will be the exclusive, global provider of Yahoo!’s maps and navigation services, integrating Ovi Maps across Yahoo! properties, branded as “powered by Ovi.”
  • Yahoo! will become the exclusive, global provider of Nokia’s Ovi Mail and Ovi Chat services branded as “Ovi Mail / Ovi Chat powered by Yahoo!”
  • Nokia and Yahoo! plan to work on ID federation between their services, beginning by making it easy for people to use their Ovi user IDs across select Yahoo! properties to easily access the online content and services they need.

Co-branded services are expected to show up in the second half of 2010 and globally in 2011. What do you think? Will the move make Yahoo! and Nokia more capable of fighting off other companies who are gaining momentum in their respective spaces *cough* Google *cough*? We’ve got the full release all lined up for you.

That the reach of Carol Bartz be extended, is not good news.

NOKIYAHO would be a better name. Very Japanese sounding, and therefore techie sounding.

Yahoo used to be a great portal but every time they forge another seemingly co-branding deal, the result is clutter and confusion for the end user. SBC-yahoo? Remember that garbage of setting up a complicated Yahoo account just to activate your DSL? Remember how annoying Yahoo Wallet was? And the endless toolbar hassles, messenger, etc, etc, etc. Unfortunately, Yahoo appears to be the next AOL.

Snoozefest. I used Yahoo back when it was still at stanford.edu (yes, before the internet had pictures on it), but they have failed to stay innovative, and are, dare I say it, obsolete.

Rather than dying alone they will get to die together.

The thing is that if they are really dying its at least a decade out as there are many markets where Nokia is still the biggest fish int he sea. The high end cell phone market may be exploding but that is not every market and that is not every consumer.

Heck, while digital audio downloads have become a major form of music consumption int he US, there are many countries where CD’s and other tangible media are still the overwhelming norm.

Anyway, all the cool technology may look like “the end” of some things but there’s still plenty of markets out there for such things and Nokia still has plenty of time to improve.
